agian............accualy there not. most good layup dogs REFUSE to work old bad tracks because they dont have too. when tracking condishions are poor, they can still wind coon. its very much like how bird dogs locate a covey....


there are exceptions to that rule but they are very very few.

A dog that only trees coon that are already treed aint much more use than a spotlight ... sure aint no coondog . A coondog is supposed to go find coon that I can on my own.

But , that's a moot point because a layup dog by most that know one ... is a dog that is a good coondog but can ALSO tree coon that are layed up and most likely there is not enough scent on the tree to tree the normal way.

These dogs are also a little more than just a bird dog that is treeing body scent ... because the ones that really impress folks will layup coon that are very high up in trees and the neat part is that the dog somehow finds the right tree and it's not just picking the low hanging fruit.

That is when you realize that there is more to it than we will ever understand ... that's a dog that is not just winding the coon that are just sitting abover their head ... that's a dog that is using experience and reason to find coon ... not just their external senses.

If you do a search , Kelly Littlejohn described a layup dog probably ten years ago on here and it was the best description given to date ...

OH SO TRUE !.....seems 5 yrs ago many hunters were asking "what is a lay-up dog" on this board........now everybodys got one ??............................................................I have owned 3 or 4 good layup dogs in 38 yrs of chasin coon ....... had others that wud hunt in tight and pull up treed on an ole coonie looking tree and have the fur once in a while, but they werent and shouldnt be considered a layup dog . The plott55 statement is a good one....this whole thread goes back to the big difference being a dog that will pull his nose off the ground and hunt the timber he's in with his nose and BRAINS............Russ and V have talked about this plenty of times on the blue board, ........yer best dogs in any of the lines seem to be able to pull this off fairly consistantly tho..........................jmo.

ps....a tree checker is usually lazy in my opinion.....they make a good picture, but will eat more dog feed than they are worth.........

IF YOU HAVE A GOOD RIG DOG MOST LIKELEY YOU HAVE A LAY UP DOG...NOW DONT GET ME WRONG THERES LOTS OF DOGS AROUND THAT CAN STRIKE OFF THE TRUCK , I AM TALKEN ABOUT A DOG THAT CAN STRIKE COLD SCENT AND FIND IT... WHAT I THINK IT REALLY TAKES IS A DOG THAT IT DOESNT TAKE MUCH SCENT TO REALLY TRIP THERE TRIGGER AND BRAINS TO FIND IT.
I BOBCAT HUNTED MANY YRS. IN OREGON...CATS DONT CLIMB TREES THEY JUMP IN UM , SOME TIMES FAR AHEAD OF THE DOGS.. A GOOD CAT DOG HAS THE BRAINS TO KNOW IF THE TRACK AINT ON THE GROUND ANY MORE ITS UP AND THEY USE THERE NOSE AND BRAINS TO LOCATE UM....THATS CALLED CAT SMARTS BELIEAVE ME IT AINT TAUGHT... SAME AS WITH A GOOD LAY UP COONDOG............COON SMARTS

I have had the pleasure of hunting a layup hound for over a decade. He is a good track and tree dog but his layups come off the wind i have seen him strike on the leash and never drop his head go 20 yards and blow the tree up but if the coon is on a limb he will tree right under it never touch the tree. To me its brains and ability he has his faults but many a night when nothins movin he still gives me somethin to talk about. and he always heads into the wind when lookin for a track.He has a four year old son that is doin the same with windin layups. I just love to see a layup dog when the sents in the air!

It amazes me what dogs can an cant do with there sense some can tree layups some cant.My uncle had a dog that could tree old tracks i guess or winded it im not for sure but one thing is certain we had four dogs that night an his was the only one on the tree the others blew right past him an he did in fact have a coon.Its like dogs tracking ive seen this happen many times you have dogs i would call a straight runner will run right behind the track then you have some amazing dogs that wind off of tracks example that night 2 of the dogs wer running kinda high up on the ridge the little english dog was cutting across down below the other dogs located an had been treeing 5 to 6 mins before the others got there with the track i havnt seen many drift a track an run it like they was looking at it would love to have one though thats the kind of hound you want one that can lay a old track up or wind an one that can drift a track
