We swam 30 dogs at the IL plott sectional. That is the first time in at least 8 years that we have had that kind of participation.

That got us to thinking of what kind of turnout we could get if we held a saturday or sunday bench show and water race.. What do you all think?

I'm sure I should know, but where was this ^^^ event held?

I drove up to Eddyville for a Sunday one summer before last..Their first one had good numbers..Not sure on the day of the others, but the numbers fell..Club problems I am sure was the cause of low turn out..
I see they have another wr scheduled the same day as B&T Days in Flora..That stinks!!! I would have made them both if they would of scheduled theirs on the Sunday after B&T Days. Eddyville and Flora are so close, but not close enough to do both in one day :/
If I am not mistaken, we chose to go to Eddyville over Flora last year because it was closer to us...I think there was only 4 dogs and 2 or 3 of those was ours :/

Sabrina, thanks for the motel info and pics from Stigler. Looks like I'll have to give it a try and see if my dedicated bank runner will stay in the water.
Unfortunately the first motel you mentioned says they have a strict no dogs policy, so looks like I'll have to stay in Sallisaw.

Chris, that's pretty big for a UKC water race!

I hate to see your club dump the field trials. You had a great course, but I wish more people would have entered! My complaint about it was that it was run in the morning, way before the BS and WR. I totally understand the reason for doing it in hot humid weather. (Last year was my first time ever in those weather conditions.) I just wish it could have been set up for BS first, then FT and WR....and then NH. I know things work differently and people think differently out here, though.

We did Sat and Sun FT and WR in CA and had good participation before the economy crashed. Actually what we did was Fri BS and NH, Sat BS, FT, WR, NH, and then Sun FT and WR. It worked good, but the handful of us running everything were about dead by Sun night.

I really appreciate any club that can do 2 FTs and 2 WRs on a weekend!! It makes it much more worth the drive, cost of fuel and motel.

I know that Oak Hill club ( Cole Camp MO ) has very good turn outs at their Sunday events.
I also really would like You to consider field trials for this too. If You think about it from the competitors side it just makes sense to go to an event where you enjoy doing several things , especially with the current gas prices. Now looking at it from the clubs side , if You just bring in one more person because of the field trial, just think what that person most likely would do. Obviously he will enter at least one dog, often more, in the field trial. Nearly all field trialers are also water racers so since he is there he will enter one or more dogs in the water race. There is also a very good chance that he will show one or more dogs in your bench show. He also most likely will eat one or more meals from your kitchen, and since WR's & FT's are considered family events he is likely to have his family with him and the'll be eating too ! Just think of all the revenue you have brought in not to mention all the young people you have introduced to our sport. The choice is yours but please at least look at the whole picture before you make a decision. CYa

Very good points StoneHill....This last haul over to Stigler, I went by myself and took 4 hounds...I entered 2 in the field trial both days, 3 in the water race both days and 3 in the show on Friday..@ $15 an entry. That was $195 for entries, with a combination of 4 dogs, 3 events, 2 days.. If Sam had of gone with me, I would have entered all 4 in both ft and wr events on both days...I don't think we ever pull out of the drive with less than 4 hounds and we enter what we bring.

Last time at Knobel, I had 6 wr entries and 3 or 4 show entries @ $10 per entry. Those same 6 would have been entered in a ft if they had one.

The reason we dropped the field trial is because of participation. Last year we ran 2 field trials. We had 11 entries in one and 9 entries in the other. Because of the length of our course it took about 2 hours to run each event. Sabrina you have been to our club and you know all the events that we run, when we looked at it, the field trial just took up so much time that we were scrambling to fit in the other events.

Yes, been there a time or two
The kids finished Ice Baby to GRFCH during a Youth event there. Good memories
The course there is a good one for sure. No cut trails for the dogs to trail on.

My two cents on the field trials are they are done in the hottest part of the day and the year usually...Field trials are something that can be done anytime, not just the middle of the day heat in the summer months...Most of the clubs that have field trials around this region, dont crank them back up until the water races get started...

So, why couldn't they be done at different times of the year...
Also it might not hit the wallets as hard either if they were split "sometime".
Just my thought on it...But, I'll be somewhere no matter what!!

It's a little hard to deny my dog runs the bank when everyone standing around is a witness. No worries, I didn't take what you wrote personally at all. I don't have much of an ego and I'm not at all a competitive person, so I don't rely on my dogs to make me feel important. LOL

I always have a dog in my motel room since I always travel alone, so I'm always looking for motels that allow dogs.....and don't look like headquarters for all the hookers and dealers.

Calblu, In that case, if Salisaw is not out of your way, it would definitely be a better option...Lots of hotels there. And not really that far of a drive.

I was at both. Drove over 7 hrs each way, brought only 1 dog, and all I entered was the FT.
My win at the first one finished my dog to a FCh, and my win at the 2nd one finished her to GrF.
Had a great time and it was definitely worth the drive to me! I just wish my dog would stay in a pond that narrow so I could have swam her there too.

Today's economy has made it hard to travel . Lots of entry money going in the fuel tank just to get there.
Two day events can be a huge entry/ motel cost for what is basically a local event compared to maybe a large breed day event.
FT's back in the day usually tried to start during cooler morning hours and it helped some but in the long run it got hot anyway and if potential entries had to come from any great distance (my club is 50 miles away) and you had to be early enough to be ready to compete you had to rattle you and the family out pretty early and many just didn't do it. Some just missed the deadline or showed up at a more CONVIENT hour for the other events.
Many spent time cleaning a dog up for a BS and didn't care to see them hot, slobbery and muddy from FT'ing & WR'ing before the show. However if they showed first many would stay and try the other 2 events and maybe the hunt but that makes a long and tiring day. More so if it's 2 days. Sometimes wife/kids do most of the daytime and dad the hunt.
Daytime events are often multiple entries with the same dogs but if money starts to hurt you often enter 1 dog at $15 where you would have entered 2 for $10 ($20) rather than 2 at $15 ($30). Other consideration is most don't like entering multiple dogs (more than the number of heats) and basically eliminating one of their own entries if they win. Way back we were the ones that started drawing the multiple entries separately so we could compete against the other guys dogs in the heats, we knew which of our own was the best consistently. I was in those meetings and it took along time/talk to get it changed and then the hunts followed.
I've seen lots of different methods used to do FT's over the years. Almost every club in MI. calls the heat an takes the dogs out in a PU truck and starts the dogs. Soon as they're gone the drag boy starts thru with scent for the next one while the handlers load up and go back to the home tree. Next heat is ready to go when the drag boy gets in . Do reg. first then give them a breather while FCHs run. and then do your finals or semi finals for the reg. dogs. If you have Gr Fchs mix them in where needed to give others a breather . The point is to keep the trial going instead of spending a lot of time standing around waiting. Drags don't have to be actually RUN a good steady walk will get it done but 1 drag boy will think his end is near if you get several dogs an make lots of drags. They either slow to a crawl or flat out quit in some cases.
The most fun in a FT is seeing the dogs come into the tree, more so if you win. Try to lay out tracks (usually a horse shoe shape) that allows handlers to get back before the dogs get there . A huge plus for a handler that doesn't have help , more fun to watch and seeing what your dog is doing helps evaluate his future training.
Different tracks to run is nice but not always practical. Many dogs won't run the same track over & over and aren't really supposed to in hunting situations. Our newer rules for 4 dog maximum while working well for better cleaner running heats have also created a large amount semi finals that cause huge amounts of extra time and cause dogs to have to run again & again on the same tracks. Only possible solution without going to far backwards that I see would be maybe allowing the old max of 6 dogs to be run in the semis & finals. The only real problem we had with that number around here was when the numbers started to be messed with so we couldn't create practical heat #'s to fit the day ,weather and entries.
The very heart of any FT is laying scent a dog (usually young) can follow . To me this is a reasonably fresh coon hide with the meat side out, I'm sure this smells like a coon and not sure of some of the other stuff. Without good scent/track you won't have a good trial and nothing is more boring or frustrating than a bad one for spectators and owners/handlers. Don't lay tricky/hard tracks. It's a spectater event for track speed & treeing with built in time limits and you really don't want to creat something with no winners.
Water races go much faster by nature but many practises for running them are the same.

I don't know and haven't entered but a couple but I see few places were I go to hunt set up with a pond or enough land to have a FT or WR. I would love to see more. I have a bad back and hips and haveing to give up my comp hunting. I would love to see FT and WR's all over the country.
I think it would go over really big if a person could bring any dog to the race. Just have an unregestered dog class.

Field Trials and Swim races

Back in the day I have seem many times 25 dogs in finals or more. Best drag in the would is a piece of carpet with a 2X4 piece inside it for weight soaked in coon scent and then wet with water. People can smell it.

I saw Coles County Swim Box the other day and Mark has it almost done. As soon as it is ready we will have some practices and I will advertise a races. I am looking forward to fun times ahead.

Good Luck all, Jeff

Thank you for that, Dale!! Any rough idea what year that was?

I'd like to see it written into the rules that video taken at the line and tree may be used to determine winners in those really close races. Yeah, yeah....I know what I'd need to do to start that ball rolling.
