You can't work after all of that but you can hike 2 miles to a tree cut a coon out of it then hike back out that 2 miles carrying the coon and I guess leading your dog?Maybe its just me but something is wrong with that picture

Alone

Leave the kid alone. I'm 30, I've hunted with guys who taught me wrong, and guys who taught me right. I've smoked 'em, cut 'em, and pulled 'em out of hollows, dens, even dug em outta holes. I learned wrong and found the right way. I dont comp hunt, I dont hunt for pelts or food. I hunt em cuz I like it. I give the kills to ppl who eat em, occassionally to my dogs. He'll learn right and change his ways. DONT CRITICIZE HIM, TEACH HIM!!!!!!

well i remember when i was a little kid hearing the old timers talkin about diggen em out and crawlin up to shack em out and all that stuff that is now looked at as if its the worst thing you could ever do. im sure just about every one has done something like that atleast once if not twice. its not the end of the world and i dont think it will hurt the coon population that bad. come on he could be out at night doing alot of worse things then that. if my kid did it i would probaly give im hek for it but atleast he wasnt robin a store at gun point for drug money. cody next time think before you post.

My dad didn't hunt . My grandpa didn't hunt. Went hunting with a guy I.met at a.fishing tournament and loved it. I got a.dog that would tree coons and didn't have bad habits.from that same.guy. I knew.nothing I.had.to.learn. there have been.alot of.times seasoned.coon hunters.told.me.I.was doing.something.wrong.or.I.shouldnt do.something.I was doing. I listen when the oldtimers.tell.me.something. but.one.thing.the.old.timers.never.did.was.treat.me.like.some.of.you.are.treating.this.kid. if.I.was.him I.would never.want.to.post.on this.board.again. I.wouldn't.cut.a.coon.out.cause.its.not.that.important.to.me. but.I.would bet.money.the.same.people.calling him a.poacher don't.think.twice.about.knockin.one.down out.of.season. If.you.don't.agree with.what.he.did.tell him but.is.Calling a.teenager names necessary.lol..geez.oh.Pete's. Also.its in his.grandmothers woods not.yours That being.said.I am.also.curious.of.how you.can.walk.2.miles.to.a.tree cut a hole with.a hatchet walk 2 miles.back.leading a dog.and carrying.a.coon but.you.can't.work. that concerns.me about.1000 times.more.than.cutting a hole in a tree.for.one.slant.headed.coon.

One post you said you walked 2 miles. As soon as a couple of us wondered how you can't work but can walk 2 miles cut a coon out of a tree then walk that 2 miles back out of the woods carrying the coon and leading your dog you said you rode on a polaris ranger.Make up your mind how you got that 2 miles to that tree and back.Or keep your story straight.

Well, this whole thread has thoroughly pi$$ed me off. Don't think I'll be posting on here for awhile cause I might say something wrong that will get me jumped on by one of you self-righteous, never done anything wrong, armchair coon hunters that would rather talk about your glory days then get out and hunt.

So the kid stretched the truth a little. Who on here hasn't? So he did something you don't think was right. Who on here has never broken any law or ethics while hunting?....No one, that's what I thought.

Forget you people, I'm signing off this board for awhile and gonna enjoy hunting my dogs. Don't need all the drama.

Oh and PS...mean people suck!

I have never met anyone who truly loved this sport that cut den trees to take a coon. If it pi$$es you off that some of us are looking out for those den trees by trying to teach an 18 yr old that its those dens that insure there will always be a coon for him to chase, then so be it.
Your grandpa cut den trees during the depression in order to survive. Survival is a whole different situation than cutting a den cause you think your dogs deserved it.
Any young man that can walk a mile and a half, wade a river, chop a hole in a tree, carry a coon, gun, hatchet, light, and lead a couple dogs back out across that river, can dang sure hold a part time job at a fast food joint and make way more money than he can coon hunting.
Oh, and your PS leads me to believe you are probably in the same age group.
Ive said all Im gonna say on the matter of cutting den trees.

Shame on youns that are giving him an attaboy for it. Yall know better.

I totally agree, this is not sportsman like at all. You have opened yourself up too bein' watched by the possum cops. When you lose your huntin' privelages you have no one too blame but yourself. I can remember back in the late 1970's the coon around here were about gone, thanks to those who killed for the money. Coonhunters around here weren't thought of too highly.

let me start by saying i dont kill but maybe 8 or ten coons a season but i probably leave several hundred sitting in the tree and i would never chop a hole in a den but we have so many coons here in southern illinois that they can become a pest so i will never preach to a young man about killing coons. I lost hunting rights on a piece of property last year because the farmer found out i didnt shoot them out he wants them all killed year round to hell with the season.

Im not condoning cuttig dens but after doing a ittle digging im not finding these laws everyone keeps referring to that make it illegal to take a coon from a tree with a hole. Seems to me these loggers that go in and clearcut a piece of timber must nock down dens everyday (now thats criminal)

It depends on your state game laws. Just like the right to retreive or the ability to carry a squaller during running season.

Some states say no dens are to be molested etc like UKC rules read. Others do not.

It may be perfectly legal in one state and illegal in the next.
