I have a cousin that has owned 2 dalmations. I will not write them off as killers cause I don't believe that is so, but they were definitely more agressive towards strangers and children than any dog I would own. First one jumped a 3 three year old when she was tryiny to pet him, got hit by a car about 2 months later. Second one jumped another kid about 4 or 5 that ran a small tonka truck into him. Luckily this time my cousin shot that dog on the spot. If you are looking for a good family pet, companion, and good natured dog that is generally a non-hunter I would look seriously into border collies. Good medium size, athletic, would be great for your hikes or rides. JMO.

Ok so what can you guys tell me about the deutsch drahthaar?

I checked out the website (Thank you) and I noticed they mention CALM... So.. not as hyper as say a GSP? That is the only thing I don't like about the GSP.. Is how hyper they are.. Other then that I love the breed..

So what can anyone tell me about the DD?

PITBULL'S by far are the best family dogs there is...No other dog loves his family more than a pit..you can teach them everything under the sun and are as athletic as athletic gets in the dog world. PEOPLE have ruined their names not them.

We've had Rex for about a year and by far the most intelligent & genital dog I've ever seen. GSP's are great around kids, have little health issues, and are great guardians.

Doberman, I have own one for 5.5 years, and also breed them.
Great dane are good dogs, rotties, but for what you would want I would say Australian Shepard would be the best or collies.
I do not know anything about dalmatian, I have own two German Shepard, would not want them for a riding dog. good luck with what ever you choose.

I actually ended up with (by accident -- are you ready l lyle) a Leopard Cur..

She's not color wise up to breed standard- and I just had her fixed.. But she is awesome.. I have not enjoyed a dog this much in, I don't know how long.. She's going on 8 months now.. Great around the horse.. Listens super well.. Haven't hunted her yet as our hunting is done for the year.. She still terrorizes the squirrels around the house.. I won't put her on anything more then coon- break her off any big game, so I don't have to deal with her hunting when we are not hunting.

I had a friend who really wanted a Leopard.. So helping look for one I came across this little half faced- blue eyed female and decided I needed her..

She's a great little watchdog and is extremely loyal.. I take her hiking and she sticks right by my side and keeps a close watch on me..

Wasn't what I thought I would end up with, but I'm so happy with her.. She's my pal.. She's got a spot in my house till the day she dies..

I probably will have a lot of people not in agreement with me but the best companion dog I ever had was a rescue Doberman. I worked a project for 6 years and lived by myself, got the Doberman and he was the best in every respect. He stayed in the house and was not aggressive at all with anyone but if anyone got in the house while I was gone they stayed there, he wouldn't bite them but wouldn't let them out. I came home for lunch one day and there was a character sitting on my couch crying, he'd broke in the house to steal what he could and the dog had him treed on the couch and wouldn't even let him up to go to the bathroom, he'd peed all over himself. I called the police and they came and took him to jail.

The dogs are extremely smart and loyal and would be good to take riding because you can't run them out of energy.

52 years later I still have a scar on my cheek from a Dalmation who bit me in the face when I was 3 years old.

Dalmations are a useless tempermental breed that has lots of health problems including deafness.

Would be Ridgeback, Catahoula or Cattle Dog.

I'm a bit partial to the Catahoulas. We have lots of property and lots of stangers walking the streamside fishing. Our catahoulas know to expect them, and leave them alone. Now if that fisherman knocked on the door - he would hear a pack of wolves on the other side.

I've run catahoulas with horses, I even loaded one on and off a helicopter.

As a rule, they are great with kids - once they understand their size in relation to the kids.

The natural herding pattern of a catahoula is somewhat circular - so when walking, you would expect the dog to range around you at the center. Yes, they will get on game - what dog won't - that takes some training. But as a rule - a catahoula will chase and then come back to you pretty quick.

A well socialized, trained catahoula ought to fit your bill quite nice.

I know several. One is great. Very stable, very loving.

Another is great with people but has attacked seriously attached several dogs. The owner of this dog is an accomplised trainer and has spent a lot of time and effort to get past this without a lot of luck. She is still working with the dog.

Another - mauled a good friend of ours, a neighbor of the dalmatians family. The dog saw her every day, she even cared for the dog when they traveled and then one day - the dal turned. This particular dal was partially deaf which may have played into the attack.

I was about to throw out my suggestion of the Catahoula as well

We have enjoyed Piper greatly, she's a world of difference from the hounds. She knows "work" and she knows "chill". She is a great companion for 4wheeler riding or hiking and we're slowly breaking her into the horses. She is quick to call back and wants to be with "her people". If we are home she's fairly friendly, she knows our close friends and is fine with them. But if she doesn't know you, I recommend staying in the vehicle. Same goes to stray dogs. It's Piper's yard... don't enter. But she beds down with our Redbones nightly because they are her pack.

Although we're faily new to the breed I find them to be athletic, intelligent, drive, and overall fantastic dogs. They were bred to do it all and they seem to excell. I know we will always have one hanging around our house now.
