Ear length has something to do with nose , Bloodhounds and all your cold nosed scent hounds have long years .

Not sure there is a a single breed of consistantly cold nose dogs with short years ... the strains of cur types and such with more nose consistantly favor the long eared hounds in looks and voice.

Too Funny. A bloodhound's ear is in no way, shape, or form, meant to cool the body down! They have no muscle power, and cant be flapped to promote cooling of the blood in the ear veins. You're thinking of elephants...not bloodhounds. As far as bloodhounds and ear length, look at historical paintings and you'll see they had medium to short ears...not the extended ears they have today. They've been bred..along with bassets, to have rediculous ears and body size because it makes the pups cute looking which in turn increase sales to pet owners.

Why do coondogs have shorter ears these days? because the best get bred to the best and they happen to have shorter ears....sorry to have to point that out, but it's the truth.

And no, dont show us a bloodhound from the 70's with long ears and try to combat what I just said. When speaking genetics, and changes from breeding....40 years is comparativly just a few moments in time.

And it's funny but Black and Tans were bred down from Bloodhounds and a few other scenthounds to become the breed they are today lol. But this is just based on my findings from the AKC site and various search engines... although I do pick the runt of the litter with ears that meet breed standards.

No other Dog or Hound other than a Bloodhound could handle a 24 hr. old Man scent in the Days of the Southern Work Camps in Summer temps of 100^ plus .. The Others Just Quit ..

Yep they needed "Scent Blocker" .. I still don't think that would help them .. !! One Bloodhound in the South Recovered 84 out of 96 "Runners" Some were Eaten before they were found .. Gatters thought they were tasty when they tried to Swim their way from the Hounds..

Mr Flores...when he says cooling he means the veins in the ears stick out thus providing more coverage to the air allowing for the blood to cool and be transfered to the rest of the body thus helping to cool the dog. With the longer ears of the bloodhound there is more vein coverage thus allowing for quicker cooling of the dog.

Ever notice the veins on your dogs ears stand out?

True, ears bleed allot...everyone knows that.

But they don't cool down a hound...not even in the slightest way. You as a "breeder" of those bloodhound thingys should know that...It's embarrassing seeing what you spout off as alleged fact on here. Your statements are absurd!

Yes I do. Its basic. Same thing on horses. When you want to cool a horse down faster you apply cold water to the major veins in their neck and wrap their legs with wet bandages. Why?? To cool the blood faster thus cooling the animal faster.

When a dog has heat stroke the vet will tell you to place cool wet towels under the front legs in the arm pit area and between the back legs...why? because that is where the largest veins are and they will cool the blood the fastest thus cooling the dog faster.

Funny, if your twisted logic were true wouldn't you just stick an ice cube in each ear on a hot dog or horse? Your horse reference is particularly disturbing...you argue that ears are for cooling...yet you state that you cool a horse by wrapping cool cloth around it's neck and legs. Does a horses ears share the same amount of body surface as it's neck and tail? I'm not sure where you're from, but around here no horse has 20 foot long ears.

For the record...the blood supply, IE veins in a dogs ears is only meant to supply oxygen to the ear tissue. Cooling the neck of a mammal cools the blood in the cartoid artery...this is a main artery that circulates allot of blood through out a body. Ear veins cannot be compared to the cartoid artery. I would have thought that everyone knew that. I guess when you want a true surprise, have a look at intelligence on an internet message board.

So for the record...we have two grown adults that really think long ears on a dog are to keep them cool? There's really a guy here, that breeds bloodhounds...and honestly believes that the small veins in a bloodhounds ears keep it's body cool. REALLY? so you too are willing to go on public record claiming that ear length influences body cooling?? Seriously? I mean...really???? So you're both telling us that the amount of blood in an ear on a bloodhound can cool and circulate the body faster than that same body can generate heat? Am I understanding you right?
