wah wah

Sounds like somebody always gets beat by a passenger! lol! I guess it would be easier 4 u crybabys to get some wins if half of the dogs didnt hunt cuz they couldnt get a ride. Apparently you guys think coonhunting is a rich mans sport. I hope u need a ride from me some day. lol

I can never recall turning down anyone who needed a ride. But don't even think about trying to shame me into feeling any obligation, first of all, I have no shame and second of all, I have no obligations.

Wow, this post really shows the differences in the way people think. There's the conservative, ride alone kind and then there's the more open, jump in kind. I'm definitely the type who wants to help someone when I can cause people have been really good to me in the past.

i dont know but to me it seems as though about a third of the people that have replied to this post are against giving a fellow hunter a ride to the woods and back to the club house. An i have to say that this disgusts me and makes me wonder wth is going on in this country. the excuses i have seen from if your old enough to drive to i dont want to get my truck dirty are about the sorriest things i have ever heard and you all should be ashamed of yourselves. no, it isnt in the rules for you to give or not give a ride but really? you are going to spend all this time on a hunt and you cant drive an xtra hr to get someone back to the club house after you guided just because you lost? talk about a sore looser. really your excuse is you dont want to get your truck dirty yet you drive it to a coon hunt and in the theory you are going to get just as muddy as anyone else in the cast? having the privilage to be a guide or judge at your home club doesnt just mean you get the advantage to hunt on your home turf, it means you give someone a **** ride if they need it. why? because if you keep this crap up eventually you'll be holding events with yourself. it's sorry s.o.b's like you that will be the end of this sport.

So dkrase, since I had the "privilage" of guiding you, I now owe you a ride to and from the woods, no matter how far out of the way or what expense that is to me. Anything else I owe you? Maybe I should pay your entry to? I just don't understand this mentality. That being said I have many times given rides and went way out of my way to get people there and back. Had some pretty bad experiences from doing that too, from people raiding the cooler without asking to 1 teenage boy that never shut up talking about how he was a professional handler, didn't like Blueticks, didnt like Ford trucks etc. (His dog turned out to be just as much of a babbling idiot as him). I have NEVER asked for a ride-just always figured I was responsible for myself. Guess I am just a sorry s.o.b. in your eyes-you don't want to know what I think of you!

Let's just make every entry 30.00 bucks across the board, and 15.00 out of every entry goes to the two trucks that haul the cast. I know 30.00 bucks gas money per truck its much, about half a tank for me, but its still something.

I try to drive when I'm at a hunt.....also there has been times that the cast I'm on has more then enough drivers, and I have given my keys to another cast that didn't have enough drivers. In fact I have gave my keys to complete strangers...lol

i was on a hunt several years back when we drawed out the club president was our judge and guide and was hunting as well . we had a 4 dog cast the judge had a spectator and made the comment that he taking his truck and his spectator was taking his truck and we needed to ride with them due to landowners not wanting strange trucks and not knowing who was on his property so me and the other 2 fellas jumped in . cold dec night . all dogs struck i took first and so on , well judges dog and english dog pulled up and treed - slick my dog and other dog went through the country had coon . we had five minutes left recasted judges dog hits a deer runs through country everyone has theres handled cast over i win 225 plus , judge signs card takes off walking through woods after his dog never offered to take me back - i rode with him everyone else with his spectator . we were 15 min from clubhouse so we all pile in a reg cab toyota pickup and he took us back to club . from then on i drove and told myself if a fella rides with me id never do him that way that i was done . if i lost my dog and was 15 from club and a guy beat me fair n square id leave my dog and take a guy back that close to the club espically if he was driving a deer through the country .

I cant believe this thread is still going. Guys its cut and dried. It is the handler responsibility to get his dog to the woods to hunt the 2 hours. If you have no ride and another cast member wants to give you one great. If you cant get a ride I guess your not gonna be hunting. If you blame somone else for not taking care of your responsibility shame on you.

Tom and LIPPER......

Well Guys I have been hesitant to enter this debate, but this is my take. When I was hunting Lipper, Lawyer, Lightning, Cash or any of his offspring, a big part of my training was the time spent on the way to the woods at a hunt. I never asked for a ride and never gave a ride which did not set well with some, but that was the way it was. LIPPER always rode in the front seat with me and no passengers!!!!! Before long no one asked because they knew the answer. After drawing out at a hunt LIPPER knew well where we were. He and I would have one hell of a pep rally on the way to the woods. He would be so pumped up by the time we cut loose that there was no way another dog was more ready.
That was part of my training that I continue today. I will go out of my way to help anyone everyday but at a hunt it is me and my dog period. I hope you can understand my logic.

This is from an old post a couple years ago but it still applies

I always "pack my own parachute" when I go to a hunt. I don't want to have to depend on ANYONE, to give me a ride or help catch my dog etc. In all my years of driving to hunts I can literally count on two hands the times I've been offered gas $.

Two instances burned me so bad I now prefer to drive to and from alone or only with someone I know well.

#1) World Hunt I draw a satellite club and someone ask for a ride I say no problem, we leave the fairgrounds at 6:30 and drive 70-80mi to the satellite club. We each go out and win our 1st rd. 2nd round we are hunting against each other drive about 30mi one way we both get beat and then drive 100mi back to fairgrounds.

On the way back I stop to gas up and buy myself pop and chips. Keep in mind its now 4:30 am I've been driving this guy I barely know around for about 6 hours. I pump $50 dollars worth of gas and proceed in the store. He gets out and goes to buy some snacks himself. He watches me pay $50 + for pops, chips and gas and NEVER offers too buy my pop and chips.

Let me clue ya'll in on something, they don't have to accept but you are SUPPOSED to offer. If you don't you don't deserve a ride next weekend. It would cost you more in $ if you drove yourself than to ride with someone else, the least you can do is offer. If they except fine, if they tell you don't worry put it back in your pocket. But don't expect to ride with me if you don't at least offer the first time.

#2) I'm 3 hours from home, one guy said he needed a ride and I said sure. We have a good hunt, but when the hunt is over his dog is at large. 1 hour after the hunt is over he is still pretty much standing in the road waiting for her. Finally after 1.5 hours I asked hey buddy where is your truck? He said he'd rode with a friend who what at the club and asked why. I then said, I need to get you to your truck ASAP so you can get your dog caught. He then said he didn't need a truck to get her caught, I said I think you do cause you are still standing here in the road and she's a 1/4 mi in there trailing around. He said I can catch her till she trees. At that point I told him I not going to wait until she trees to make a 4.5 hour drive home. But I'll be happy to get you to your buddy's truck so you can get her caught. That was a quiet ride back to the club.

Here are a few GOOD rules to go buy.

If you ride with someone other than a CLOSE friend give them some gas $. And if you don't offer gas $ don't get mad the next time when they tell you they prefer to drive alone.

If your dogs does not handle and can't be caught unless treed don't ride with anyone. Nobody likes waiting on a dog especially one they don't own, when its standing on its head a 3:30 in the morning and they have a 2.5 hour drive home.

Just because you don't mind mud all over the place doesn't mean the next guy is okay with it. If you are in somebody's truck keep your feet on the mats and your batteries off the door.

If you have a spectator don't even think about asking somebody for a ride, drive you own truck.

Kids can ride regardless, but what parent would let their kid go off with a complete stranger????

LOL...Hopkins, i thought i was the only one that let the hound dog ride shotgun on the way to hunts! best time to bond and pep talk!! a few french fries and a pat on the head once in a while...they love it..and i swear the pep talks help...if its a nice clean dry night, she can ride up front all night and the pep talks continue lol...on the way from the clubhouse to the first drop, its time to fire her up..

like travis said, it comes down to responsibility...

i see it as you showed up at a hunt knowing your gunna need to get to the woods...

i can promise i wont show up at a hunt asking for a ride..cant afford gas, trucks broke down, whatever, me and the dog will stay home..

my small truck and everything i haul and 1 dog box for my dog and my dog only, i dont have the room "to be sportsmans like"

I learned something from this post.

I'm never going to train my hound to ride up front. I'm not saying I never let my hound ride up front because I do, but not to the extent the dog goes to the cab before the tailgate.

I would hate to be in the situation where I've trained my hound to ride up front and feel that a pep talk on the way to the woods is a necessary part of the equation to our success, so if the situation ever arose where I had to make a decision to help a fellow hunter and enjoy some fellowship or ride with my dog and talk it all night, I'd feel in order to win I'd need to pick my dog over a fellow hunter.

Not saying there is anything wrong with it, because I've given rides to some folks where I would have preferred to talk to my dog, but I'd never want to put myself in that situation where I had to choose.

No, they are not the same. In a recent poll, 88% said they would find your coon for you even if it beat them. About half won't haul you to the woods. So, no, they are not the same.

If your dog is in the seat I can respect that reason for not hauling another hunter, you already have a hunter in that seat. If you feel the need to bring along a cheerleading section I cannot. If you want to hunt with spectators, do it at home while you are pleasure hunting. The hunters should always come before the spectators in this sport.

I drive to at least 90% of the hunts that I attend and have never failed to offer a ride to a hunter that needs one, nor do I haul spectators of my own or anyone elses. Maybe I'm an a**hole, but if you don't have a ride for your spectator you shouldn't have brought them in the first place. If you draw out with me at a hunt and need a ride the right seat and the right side of my box are yours for the taking. I don't expect gas money or breakfast, just a fair hunt and good sportsmanship.

It's ashame that this is even going on. People to selfish to help out a fellow houndsman is rediculous.. Treat other the way you would like to be treated.. It's as simple as that. God bless and happy hunting everyone!!

so your trying to tell me if myself and 3 of my hunting buddies want to go to walker days and we all live in say mn we should each drive our own trucks the 12hrs to get there? thats insane and irresponsable.

its not about not being able to afford the gas its about being smart with your money and not wasting it on gas and carpooling to the bigger hunts.

btw i always offer to help pay for gas and usually buy breakfast.

My questions is....what happens when you are riding with someone or they are riding with you and you all get into it really bad out there, during the hunt????? HMMMM!

I'd like to say that I wouldn't leave them stranded but depending on the severity of our argument, you might be walking "LOL"!

On a serious note, if I take someone out, I will get them back.

Just something to think about. It happens!

btw i always offer to help pay for gas and usually buy breakfast.

i understand where you are coming from, but why should i (the person who drove my self from the same distance) have to fit the bill for you to go hunting just because you road with other people to it.
i am sure this wouldn’t be so much of a issue if people were just more courteous of the kindness people driving are doing for THEM...
I have never and would never take any money from people who wanted a ride but in all the times I have hauled people I have only been offered it twice and only thanked a handful of times.(like it is expected of me to be your taxi driver.)
You say shame on us for our lack of kindness, but it is YOU guys who make it so we don’t want to give rides!! talk with your fellow bummers about courtesy and maybe this will change...

wow

Some day you guys that wont give someone a ride wont have anyone to compete against. You guys are rediculous! I gaurantee 90% of them that wont give you a ride they wont see ur coon and they aint got much of a dog. Just lookin 4 a way to eliminate the guy thats gonna beat them. The vast majority of guys who do need a ride probly can afford the gas but figure that most coonhunters are sportsman enough to give them a ride. Why should two or three guys drive 2 or 3 hours from the same place to the same place? Thats just stupid. If you guys want this sport to last you better try to help each other out along the way. Dont forget there are lots of people who want to make this sport illegal anyway. By the way i like having my truck with me at every hunt because i may need it to help me round up my dog etc.etc.. But I ALWAYS give ANYBODY a ride if thats what it takes to help a fellow HOUNDSMEN out!

I lost my drivers licenses for close to 4 years due to stupid mistakes and I'm thankful for everyone that let me ride with them. I just got them back last april and the first hunt I drove too a man from Kentucky needed a ride and I was glad to haul him. Some should think about what it would be like if they couldn't drive, I bet they would want a ride too.
