If eyes are seen and the body can't be seen, its generally going to get plussed in casts I'm on.

Possums are usually low enough and obvious enough to tell what they are. But I wouldn't doubt that occasionally a possum gets plussed.

We have guys that can't see anything in trees that they don't want plussed, right now. So I guess now when 2 eyes are staring straight back at them they can now say they are the wrong color and not a coon. But its better than letting the tree get circled, now they can get the dog minused or scratched. I love it.

Guys I've been coonhunting nearly 50 years and never saw a coon with green eyes..Treed plenty of critters in New England with green eyes, they are called Fishers..These are one nasty member of the weasel family..

you'll see them both, as for the dim color that is true unless the porky is nervous. If he is nervous his eyes will glow dark red.

Looks to me like ya'll have finally ran out of things to argue over and came up with a new one.

I have never been on a cast when eyes were all that was seen that they weren't plus.

I was at a Zone hunt this past fall and a dog split by itself; the other three treed about a quarter deeper. The owner of the dog found the "coon"; I was judging, went around to see it; the eyes had a blue cast, not orange or yellow. I've looked at a lot of coon, never seen any like that. I looked for "mass" behind the eyes, couldn't find anything, and it wasn't a thick tree either. The others wanted to plus and move on to the other dogs. I wanted to look that tree over better, cause I ain't never seen eyes like that. Tom

I saw a guy one night get all excited and scream for the cast to come look because the coon was about ready to jump. We all got over there in a hurry, and the "coon" kept on going through the sky. It was an airplane light, going perfectly out a limb. The guy just laughed and said, well that is kinda embarrassing, and took his minus without any problem as it was a legitimate slick. I hunt with this man to this day and ever since that night he has turned his light out and made sure the shine disappeared before pointing out the coon

My friend John , my granddaughter , and myself just got back from visiting with Larry Atherton over at the club at Maple Rapids. ( They had a hunt over there. )
About a mile down the road , we see these GREEN eyes just off the road in a picked cornfield.
Got up there and a coon ran across right in front of the truck. No question as to whether it was a coon or not.
I asked both of them what color the eyes looked to them , they both said GREEN !

Larry is correct. It depends on lots of different properties of physics.

What angle is the light hitting it, what is the moisture content in the air etc.

I have seen coons eyes that were amber, green, orange, yellow, white, red and almost any other color you can think of.

I also went and got a gun one night cause a pup treed and amber eyes were plumb in the top of a huge tree. Just had to be a coon. When I got back the eyes were movin, and I finally got to see the body. Yep, it was a possum.

The color of the eyes is not a valid arguement as to what the animal is.

Somebody probably already asked this, but how in the world did people score coons under the same UKC rules back when people use two cell flashlights. And wheatlights was the best thing out there?

wow, really? I mean REALLY? I don't care how long you claim to have been coon hunting, If you haven't seen green eyes on a coon you either haven't treed many or you aren't paying attention. I've treed far too many to remember... as in hundreds. Usually they're kitten coon but I've also treed big sows and boars with eyes that reflected green. Maybe y'all need an eye exam. Never ceases to amaze me what I read on here.

I will keep looking & see if I have any / I see green eyes up my hounds tree pleasure hunting I will kick that dogs butt on out of there ! If I am in a hunt & that animal is up a tree far enough to only see green eyes I say you would have to plus it up / Could be a raccoon lol don't seem to be many Green eyed raccoons around this neck of woods / But I am not saying that you guys do not have green eyed raccoons in your neck of woods /

Roverdog, the color changes on the same coon/animal.

It all depends on the angle of the light, moisture in the air etc.

Their eyes are a reflector, they change constantly depending on which direction they are looking and how your light is hitting them.

How many times have you seen a dogs eyes glow red/yellow/green depending on how the light hits them?

It's no different for coon.

Just depends on what kind of light and how it hits them.
