One of my hunting buddies who is a dairy farmer tells me that his touch screen phone has had remarkable durability for him. It has been dropped in the "slop" several times, into the water tank [fully submerged] and banged around in numerous ways. I would also be nervous about touch screen had I not heard that, but I think the touch screen systems are actually more waterproof and durable than we might imagine.

I am glad that screen lock is being considered.

All right 'hounded', if you have connections in the R and D dept at Garmin, here is another problem and possible solution:
Using a Garmin during a night hunt is very problematic. If you leave it turned on it must stay at the truck. If you leave it at the truck, and you hunt deep into a large section of land, and now you are over a mile in and time is called and you have to hustle back to the truck to get your Garmin, only to find that your dog is even deeper in the country, so now you have to hustle back in where you just came from. Or you can bring the Garmin with you, but leave it turned off. The problem with this is that if your dog goes out of range with the handheld turned off you don't even have any idea which direction your dog went, and if it got into something that is blocking the signal, or if the dog went super deep you may never find them with the Garmin. An example of this- dogs are cut loose, your dog goes up over a hill [silently], gets in the next valley and chases a raccoon into an old abandoned barn, or rock den, or well. Now when you call time out and turn on your Garmin it does you no good at all.
So here is a possible solution- create a setting on the handheld unit in which the unit is on and gathering data of where your dog has been and the route that you walked in, but will not show any of that info on the screen. Basically create a "sleep" mode. When you want to turn it on to the "live" or "active" mode it will sound an alarm- a trademarked and unchangeable tone or beeping that would be audible up to 25 feet- equal to a cell phone ring. When the handheld goes to the "active mode"it also displays on the screen when it was turned to that mode and for how long. Or better yet, when you put it in the sleep mode it starts a timer and tells you how long it has been in the sleep mode and displays the UKC logo on the screen.
So the whole point of this is that Garmin shows the technology to UKC and UKC changes their definition of Garmins being turned off to mean that they must be in the "sleep" mode. Then a hunter may take his Garmin with him in the night hunt. He may have it turned on [in the sleep mode] and carry it with him during the hunt. In the event that time is called and dogs are lost, the handler may turn handheld to live mode and know where the dog was when it went out of range, or where it is if still in range. If a judge of a cast thinks that a handler has used the handheld during regulation time, he may ask to see the Garmin. If the screen shows the UKC logo, then the judge knows that it is in the sleep mode, and he may see just how long it has been in the sleep mode. So if a handler tried to cheat and slip off to the side and check the where abouts of his dog, the alarm would have sounded, and if the cast did not hear that then the judge could see that the Garmin had only been in the sleep mode for a few minutes and know that it had been used. If the amount of time on the sleep mode was any amount less that the length of that drop, then the handler would be scratched and even barred.
This all sounds a bit complex, but I think a few programmers could add these features into the "brains" of the handheld, and I imagine that UKC would see the benefits of allowing handlers to better know the whereabouts of their dogs when time is called.

Truly

I like the idea of a sleep mode just for battery life but I don't like the audible alarm. If I am deer hunting, I would like it to start up in silent mode so I can check on where my dogs are and still keep hunting. It would probably extend battery life considerably if it was gathering data but not displaying.

Be easier to just let people use there Garmin in the hunt. There would be more accurate calling and less calling other peoples dog. You could allso see a dog leave a tree. Allso they couldn't just keep walking in the direction there dog left in saying " I hear him in that direction" thinking if they walk far enough they will be able to hear him. Then when they finaly give up and you all walk back to the truck with time out called. You find that all dogs are in the opposite direction.
All we would have to do is put everyones collar in everybodies 220. We could all watch everyones dog. If some one didn't have a garmin we could lone them a collar and let them watch our 220.
Any problems and you could go back to the MOH with the data on the garmin and print off the tracks. Even put a ? right were the ? came up in the hunt.
It would be a lot safer on the dogs and hunter as well.

If you wanted to get the hunt REAL HONEST you could do away with strike points and just count tree points. Wouldn't matter what the dogs done as long as they treed a coon and stayed there.

Thanks. Let's push this idea. I think if people fully understand how this could work they would really like it.

Runningdeer- The sleep mode used for UKC sanctioned hunts could be set up only for UKC hunts, the alarm would only go off after being used in the "UKC approved sleep mode". If the handheld had a different sleep mode, the UKC logo would not show up on the screen, and if a judge asked to see your handheld, and it showed itself to be on, and in any sleep mode other than the "UKC approved sleep mode" then that handler would be scratched and even barred.

My hope is to get UKC to want to get out ahead of this. Feel like if they don't do it and one of the other registries does, they will be a follower rather than a leader. I know UKC likes to be in the lead.

My improvements would be tracking more than 10 collars, battery life, antenna connection, and longer range is like to just use 1 collar but never will for bear n cat hunting til they do. Use my 217 collars too. Don't think they'll get better range unless the fcc let's them put more than 2 watts of power to the collar. U can wish for a lot of things to do with them but that's the basics I would want.

Contrary to belief I don't have any more input into garmin an they will not listen to me anymore than you guys.. If they did I think we would have a better system for hounds. (or at least I'd like to think so)

I doubt very seriously those changes will come in the form of Garmin. Besides I don't see the benifit for garmin except with a Small percentage of the users that do these night hunts.

Garmin to date has really modeled and tested these to Bird Dog guys and only a few limited hound guys. I wish they would gear them towards our needs as houndsmen more.

Actually I've heard that they don't even really listen to their feild testers. They simply do what they think is best and don't really ask for input.

You should try to use a Magnent mount antenna on your truck while you are hunting, I consistantly see 2-3 miles range while hunting Cats, and I'm sure that would help keep tabs on your dog while your hunting and give you allot more range over the stock antenna.

I know some guys that have left their Garmin with a LR antenna out in the woods if they have to go back to town to fill up or something, that way they at least have an idea of which way the dogs went if they get out of range.

Another option that I would probalby recomend you would have better luck, is to get UKC to allow the judge? to put everyones dogs on one garmin and Ask the judge or who ever is there that knows and will follow the rules to carry the Garmin for you guys. I know next to nothing about Night hunts, But I would imagine that someone there is allowed to carry one your just not allowed use it in the hunt..

But I'm not a night hunt guy so I don't konw how those things work.

Garmin's BirdsEye subscription is the same as Google Earth maps. If the new 320 is based off any of Garmin's newer gps units, this feature should be easily available.

I would like the new 320 to use the 3D shaded maps that most of Garmin's newer units use. This would replace the need for topo maps. They are much easier to read, especially in places that have a lot of elevation changes.
