I hear ya. It really isn't a debate as much as it is people struggle with trying to justify why they feed a garbage feed instead of a good one. They can't but they sure try.

EA is a richer food with higher protein and fat levels. This may, or may not, be what your dog needs. I have never been one that was a fan of trying to add wieght onto a dog unless there is a direct positive influence to performance. Feed for performance, not pleasure.

CSnowgren,
I work in the feed industry and you may be greatly suprised by the feed you are feeding. You say that you research, but I am in it every day. I agree the meat based foods are something each dog owner should strive for. But, consider alot of things. Dry dog feed must be cooked at the right tempatures, and they can print what they want on a bag. I have been in the business for many many years and I don't trust some companies, (and Im not saying I trust Southern States or Purina any more than any other company) but Southern States and Purina does buy some of the best ingredients out there. One thing I like about Southern States and Purina is they buy most of their ingredients from local farmers which in turn creates fresher feed. Most other companies buy ingredients from China. (not being smart, but call up most dog food companies and ask them where their ingredients are from and how long they hold the ingredients before they use them, I doubt very seriously they will tell you) So, when some folks get different looking feed than the bag before, it is almost certain that it is not fresh. But, Southern States and Purina has probably the best meat by- product feeds on the market, because they are fresh, and if it is not fresh that in turn can create worse problems, than a feed having by-products, corn, or wheat. So, which is better, it is up to the owner and how their dogs react and perform. I have fed them all and Southern States feed keeps my dogs up just fine and I hunt 3-5 nights a week, and my dogs perform, look, and feel fine. I have won several major events and my feed holds up just as good as the other feeds, and I hunt with folks who feed the holistic feeds and I am tickled that mine holds up just as good or better. I do not work for Southern States or Purina, Just the feed industry and I know what goes on in the industry.

Purina One here and it always looks the same. Purina One is the only feed I have feed that doesn't have ill affects on one of the dogs. I have guys ask me what I feed my dogs because they look good (build and coat). They tell me Purina is too expensive I tell them to try it for a month and you will see that you save money buying a better feed and less trips to the feed store.

No doubt some dogs appear to do fine on that type of feed. I fed it for years...Then I tried a true meat based feed and had my eyes opened.

Everyone said I was crazy paying $34 for a 40# bag of feed...But I feed LESS feed and make a 40# bag of feed last longer than 2-50# bags of the corn based feed....nd I save money.

I see the difference in my wallet, the waste no longer left polluting my pens , and how much better my dogs look.

What brand do you feed your dogs?

NOT GOOD DOG FEED

One thing I have learned is real quick look at the ingredients, Dog food manufacturer's are required to list the ingredients where the ingredient that makes up most of the feed has to be first on the list of ingredients, The second most used has to be second,so on and so forth. A dog is a carnivor in other words they are meat eaters and a dog feed that starts with corn or wheat or any sort of grain is not a good quality feed. Another thing I have learned is when corn is number one it will tend to over heat your dog in the summer months. Dont know about yall but If I am going to kennel a dog then I am going to feed a good quality feed not just a filler. I feed my horses corn and my dogs a good meat product, The pride dog food has a good feed that is chicken and rice, it is a good feed 26% protein and 20% fat. Dont worry to much about the protein rating be more concerned with the fat, the fat is meat and dogs are carnivors.

That is because SS has different formulas.

I don't even remember what one I copy and pasted, Active formula maybe? Either way, Buckshot is right. They make different formulas as do most companies. They make a formula for each segment of the consumer, cheapskates to the rich and famous. Coonhunters are notorious cheapskates so many go towards the cheapest they can find and then come up with other reasons why its such a great feed. When in reality one junk formula from a company is no better than another junk formula from another. I get a kick out of guys that go from one to the other like they invented the wheel. If one wants to feed a good feed, they will invariably have to pay for it. Others will just keep polishing that turd.
