Well said. I also like okies smoke example but i would add that in order to get a directional fix you cant keep your head in the smoke. Only by leaving that scent pool to the left and then the right can you get a fix on direction. Thats why a good drifting track dog is constantly cutting that scent. I get to watch it in the snow quite often and you would be surprised how seldon a dog is actually running on the track.

Thats right, its not unusual to see them running 30-50 feet to one side or the other and never acually cut the track. From what I have seen, I dont think we can comprehend how a dog smells, their nose just works differently than ours, trying to assimilate our sense of smell to theirs is laughable IMO.

It is surprising what ya can learn paying attention to the tracks in the snow. That is why i say snow never lies.

Well it mostly boils down to Brains, instead of straddling a track, a hound should move with the line of sent, i have watched my old lucy dog leave another hound straddling and go tree the coon before the other hound knew what happend. id say some of that was inherited from her Great Grand sir, He was Norman Shark fin and Hickry Nutt Harry Breed ...

Big difference between a drifter and what some call a cutter too. I've seen where a dog will blow out a good distance, sometimes on the same coon and sometimes a different track all together. That I don't like and the snow don't lie.

If u had of taken Lucy off of that track and let the other hound had it u would have said he sure is workin that old Cold Track!
well i knew my dog and i know the track wasent that cold it was just the diffrence in the two hounds, Lucy wasent going to wast her time smellin every step like he was, she smelled coon and went with the sent to where he was ........
