I ALSO AGREE WITH REB. WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND STATRED TO HUNT IN THE HUNTS, YOU COULD GET CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS AND A TROPHY WHEN YOU WERE SECOND IN THE CAST AND SCORED ENOUGH TO PLACE. I WAS TICKLED TO GET THAT 7TH PLACE TROPHY. I FEEL THE ATTENDANCE DROPPED OFF WHEN UKC ONLY ALLOWED CAST WINNERS TO PLACE AND GET POINTS TOWARD THE NT CH DEGREE. WHO CARED IF YOU DID NOT WIN YOUR CAST. WE USUALLY GAVE AWAY TROPHIES FOR 9 TO 10 PLACES NOW THEY ARE LUCKY TO GIVE AWAY TWO TO THREE.

EVERYONE SAID THIS WOULD TAKE THE CHEAP NT CH 'S OUT OF IT BUT THEY ARE STILL HERE.

I AGREE WE NEED TO MAKE IT FUN AND INTERESTING FOR THE KIDS. IT WAS FUN THEN FOR ME. I DO NOT BELIEVE MY SON HAS FUN NOW AT HUNTS AND THAT IS A DARN SHAME. HE LIKES TO HUNT, SO FOR NOW WE PLEASURE HUNT.

SORRY TO DISAGREE WITH YA HERE AND I AGREE WITH WVHILLBILLY. WE HAVE PUT ON PKC HUNTS ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THEY JUST DO NOT DRAW BIG HERE. WHY I DO NOT KNOW. I WAS INVOLVED WITH MY CLUB TRYING THESE HUNTS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THEY NEVER DREW A CROWD. WE WORKED AT IT AND HAD AN ADDED PURSE HUNT. NOT REAL BIG BUT NICE. WE HUNTED 8 DOGS. USUALLY WE HAD 3 TO 4 DOGS. HECK OUR BUDDY HUNTS WERE BETTER THAN THIS. WE HAD THREE CLUBS IN OUR AREA HOLDING THEM, THEY WOULD VERY SELDOM ATTEND ONE ANOTHERS EVENTS, THAT WAS A SHAME. NOW THE OFFICERS IN MY CLUB ARE HOLDING THEM AGAIN. THEY GET THE SAME PEOPLE EVERYTIME, VERY SELDOM ANYONE NEW. I HUNTED IN THEM AND HAD A GOOD TIME. I ALMOST FINISHED MY FEMALE TO CH ONE YEAR. BUT THEY DO NOT WORK HERE, WISH THEY DID.

WE EVEN TRIED NKC, AKC, ACHA, ALL FAILED HERE!!!!!

HUNT NUMBERS

JUST MY PENNYS WORTH I HAVE BEEN GOING TO HUNTS FOR FOURTY YEARS. I HAVE SEEN THE NUMBER GO DOWN I CAN REMBER GOING TO STATESVILLE NC TO A SAT HUNT AND A HUNDRED DOGS BE THEIR. I ALSO CAN REMBER A FEMALE WITH A FIRST PLACE WIN BEING WORTH 3000 DOLLARS NOW 500 MAYBE NOW YOU CAN DRIVE TO A NUNT OF SOME KIND WITH IN A HUNDRED MILES OF MY HOUSE 6 NIGHTS A WEEK. YOU HAVE 5 OR 6 ORG PUTING ON HUNTS IN THE COONHOUND WORLD. NOW THAT WATERS DOWN THE NUMBERS. PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHY YOU CANT PUT ON A HUNT ANY TIME WITH UKC THERE ARE A CONFLICT RULE OF A 100 MILES. YOU MY HAVE A CLUB HOLDING A HUNT 90 MILES WITH A ATTENDENCE OF 4 DOG BUT IF THEY DONT WANT TO GIVE UP THE DATE YOU CANT HAVE A UKC HUNT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE UKC STEP IN WITH A GUIDE LINE OF A STATE AVERAGE AND IF YOUR CLUBS HUNT DID NOT MEET THE ADVERAGE IN 3 YEARS YOU WOULD LOSE THIS DATE. THIS WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE 1 AND 2 DOG HUNTS CHEAP WINS THIS WOULD ONE THING TO HELP OUR HUNT ARE HARD TO GET GUIDES IN DEER AND TURKEY SEASON THIS IS ANOTHER HARD TIME TO KEEP UP THE NUMBERS UP. THE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM IS THE BEST THING TO COME TO THE UKC HUNTS. BUT WE NEED TO TRY TO GET CLUBS TO PUT ON QUALITY HUNTS NOT WORRY ABOUT THE QUANITY OF HUNTS THEY HAVE. EACH YEAR HAVE A CULB MEETING TO JUST TALK ABOUT THE VALUE OF THE HUNTS THE CLUB HAD THE PAST YEAR .AND DROP A HUNT IF YOU HAVE A DATE THAT IS NOT DRAWING WE ALL NEED TO PUT MORE PLANING IN THE HUNT TO GET THE QUALITY UP . MOST HUNTS HAVE NO GUIDE PLANING AND IF YOU GO TO A HUNT 2 TIME AND DONT GET IN COON YOU DONT GO BACK . GET THE NUMBERS UP DONT COME EASY .

I don't think there are to many clubs. I think that actually might help numbers. I think alot of it has to do with fewer hunters in general and lets face it this sport is alot more expensive than it use to be. The other thing that seems to be a problem here in my area is there is a guy that is a known cheater and he has 4 or 5 buddies that run hunts with him and they all go to the same hunts together and this guy always gets asked to judge and his buddies always seem to end up in the same cast and your beat before you turn loose. These clubs know this goes on but they continue to let these guys do it. Hear guys say well so and so is here the score card is probably made out. When this happens a few times you kind of get tired of seeing it.

NONE HUNTING JUDGES

ALL OF THESE CHEATERS , BUDDY, BUDDY RIGGED CAST THAT EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT IF YOU HUNTERS WILL WRITE THESE CAST UP. WHEN YOU KNOW THERE IS WRONG DOING NOT JUST TALK ABOUT IT UNDER THE SHADE TREE. ONE OTHER THING I DONT EVER KNOW OF ANY ONE THAT I HAVE EVER DREW OUT WITH THAT I COULD NOT HAVE PUT UP WITH FOR 2 HOURS. IF THEY ARE THAT BAD GO BACK AND ASK FOR A .......NONE HUNTING JUDGE.....SOMETIME THESE GUY THAT KEEP THINKING THEY ARE GETTING CHEATED JUST DONT KNOW THE RULES ARE, AND SOME OF THE OTHER TIMES YOU JUST GET BEAT ONLY ONE WINNER PER CAST AND THREE LOSERS.

the best thing u can do at a ukc hunt is win your cast!!! ukc should give u some thing for that. i for one have won many nite champ casts with like 350 r so and not get a nite champ win. not to talk about the time and gas money and entry fee. when i won my cast. that ant good to me.

Well here is you a pat on the back. PAT PAT
LMAO.........Sory couldn't help myself. If you read all these post about it being to easy to make a nitech you will realize there isn't nothing UKC can do about a cast win. If you want something for winning a cast go to a PKC and you will get a little cash. You will hunt against all dogs too, nitech, grnitech all in the same cast.
Winning a cast isn't the best you can do at UKC. You can win the hunt.

In our area you'll have other ukc hunts within 50 or60 miles on the same day because we're close to the state line and they must not count that. Also the idiots that they're dragging to the hunts now scatter like a covey of quail when you turn them loose and you're out there till daylight trying to help get them up because they're the great;you'll have to get him off of a tree;type dogs and they won't let you catch them.People are getting sick of going to a hunt to enjoy themselves and having to spend all night chasing an idiot that they would'nt even go hunting with otherwise. This is the response from many of the hunters that use to hunt and guide in this area.So if you're the one hunting this type dog, reap the benefits.

Yep a dog that will handle and come when called doesn't take that much more time in training. Not honoring is one thing but not minding would get them hungry if I had to feed them.

the type of dog described here has not business in a hunt anyway. if it takes all night for a dog to tree a coon or to catch the dog cause it want tree there is a problem. leave that dog at home

this does not realy have any thing to do with the number of dogs in hunts being down. but reading this board the go wounder do not come back type of of dog is what is being bred for.
my self i like a dog that goes hunting but does not forget who is feeding it and has the sense to come back in 30 min if they have not found a track.
i think these go wounder dogs are just rambling and not looking for a track. some nights the coon are not moving at one location, however if you move two or three miles they may. if the dog does not have the sence to come back in you can not move.

the reason for number being down is less coon hunters and less places to hunt. nothing we can do about eather.

thanks for reading

I agree.
I knew some hunters that were on their last hounds.

I knew a bunch more hunters on their last hounds.

Today,
I know several guys that have hounds, but you really have to twist their arms to get them to go hunting. (The fire is burning out)

10 years from now,
There will be alot more guys fall by the wayside.

25 years from now,
Hunting with hounds will be a distant memory for most of us on this board as we know it today.(IMO)

In the future,I dont see waves of young people taking up the sport, nor do I see vast tracts of wilderness suddenly opened up for hound hunting to sustain the sport.

I do however, see rural America chopped up into smaller and smaller chunks and rural attitudes toward hound hunting diminish to the point that houndsmen will eventually "wither on the vine".

I REALLY , REALLY, HOPE YOU ARE WRONG. BUT I DO KNOW TIMES ARE CHANGEIN. LETS FACE IT SOME KIDS ARE LAZY,[MINE INCLUDED]. AND HUNTIN LAND IS GETTIN MORE SCARCE,[THERE ARE OLD FAMILY FARMS BEING SUB DIVIDED EVERY DAY IN MY COUNTY]. AND BECAUSE OF BAD PRESS[ AND THE ANTI HUNTERS], KIDS HAVE GOT A DISTORTED VIEW OF HUNTIN. I DONT HAVE THE ANSWERS FOR THESE PROBLEMS, BUT ONE THING FOR SURE , IF WE COON HUNTERS DONT GET MORE POLITICAL AND VOTE FOR PRO HUNTIN CANIDATES, AND GET TO WINNING THE KIDS BACK TO THIS WONDERFUL OL SPORT, IM AFRAID FESTER YOU WILL BE RIGHT. DONT TAKE ME WRONG FESTER, BUT I HOPE YOU ARE WRONG ON YOUR PREDICTION. GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

bring back the field trials and water races!!!! i know they are still availible, but there are no clubs hardly holding any anymore.
i remember as a young"n going every weekend that we could to a trade days and all the things that go with it..(field trial, water race, treeing contest..ect)
we were there the whole day and had a blast. club house was open all day selling good food and making money.
we would spend the weeknights getting them ready for the weekend by swimming them and running them.
maybe im just getting older and am being nostalgic, probably am, but i do remember those days and hope somehow they can come back.

Less youngsters taking up the sport.
Competition hunts discourage many hunters.
Fewer places to hunt hounds (I'm switching to Mtn. Curs entirely).
Our youth being taught in school that hunting is cruel.
Things that are posted on the internet about how we treat our hounds and wildlife.

The biggest difference between today and 40 years ago, and maybe the reason we draw these much smaller crowds at the hunts, is that 40 years ago they hunted their dogs maybe a couple nites a week, if at all in the summer, and then put them in a hunt and they were able to compete with the other dogs that weren't anymore hunted down than the rest. Today you got a relatively small group of serious competitors hunting every nite and showing up with dogs that are in far better condition and better tuned and they blow out the weekend warriors. Fact is, the majority of coonhunters can't compete in todays nite hunt world so they don't even try. The less devoted have given up.

My home club only holds PKC hunts, and while we dont draw 75-100 dogs, our hunt numbers are up. There is some kind of hunt with-in 45 miles of here 5-6 nights a week. We average 25-30 dogs at out Tuesday night 1hr hunts. Maybe it's something to do with the part of the country we're in. We have brought up holdinf UKC and AKC hunts before, but for no more interest than is shown, not needing a MOH, how much less money and more trouble holding them, we just stick with the one that seems the most popular in this area.

I dont think water races & field trials will increase attendence. Maybe for the first one, but after that there will be more tumble-weeds rollings around the clubhouse than entries...
