Tax Cuts Hurt the Economy?

In the short-term, tax-cuts usually help the economy!!! Buy now, pay later. Well, that's how I bought my house. That's how I buy my cars. Without a roof over my head, and a car to get to work, I HAVE NO ECONOMY!!!

In the long-term, it's hard to judge. It's not debt dollars that count, so much as debt-income ratio. For example, Reagan drove our national debt to about 4 trillion. GW is the second greatest contributor to national debt, taking it to around $7 trillion (so far), but interest costs are lower. Let's take it to $8 trillion by 2006 (he'll probably get there).

Example :

Assumption 1 (1988) : Debt is 4 trillion. Interest rate is 5%. Our annual interest pymt. is 200 Billion.

Assumption 2 (2006) : Debt is 8 trillion. Interest rate is 3%. Our annual interest payment is 240 Billion.

If you just look at the 4 trillion and 8 trillion figures, you'd say we're twice as worse off.

But, let's look further. Assume that our national income is .25 times our national debt (in each case).

Assumption 1 (1988) : Income 1 trillion. Debt 4 trillion. Interest 200 Billion. Debt-Income Ratio = 20%. Money left for other purposes = 80%.

Assumption 2 (2006) : Income 2 trillion. Debt 8 trillion. Interest 240 Billion. Debt-Income Ratio = 12%. Money left for other purposes = 88%.

Where are we better off? Under Assumption 2, obviously.

These are hypotheticals (for illustration only). If you want to do some research, check the annual national debts, treasury interest rates, and GNI figures, and do the calculations (to see what our most prosperous years were (as a country), feel free.

In government, it's debt-income ratio that matters most, as govt. is perpetual.

On an individual level, we have to pay it off (our lives are not perpetual).

Geez!!! I'm confusing myself. I thought increasing the national debt was bad. Now, I'm surmising that "it depends". It depends on the financing rate, and the level of income that the debt investment produces. WHEW!!!

DANG T-BO, we live in Indiana too, but in our area the size of house you have would be around $70,000. Seems to me you are paying thru the nose just to be where you are. No offense but, here in the mid south area of our great state the average cost of a 1300 sq. ft. home is much lower than what you have to pay, I guess if you want to live in a certain area you have to pay for it. Me, I'd rather live where my money goes farther. My average yearly income is $45,000 a year, we own 2 acres, have a decent home, drive 2 fairly nice trucks, are able to buy the "little" things we want, nothing major, and we get by just fine. But again, I guess it could depend if you can be happy with what you really need and not what you want in order to "keep up" with the Jones's. Us, we are happy with having family close by, hounds to hunt with and each other to love and lean on. But again, I guess it all depends on where your priorities are. Material things, with all the bells and whistles, or a simple life of family, love, and happiness. Us, we choose the latter.
