I have dealt with a few, and rarely is it a good experience. They always act like you're a criminal and usually don't treat you with the same respect they expect you to treat them with. I am a taxidermist and they can show up when ever they want and go through everything I have, so far those interactions have went ok, but th elast time he said I'll be back and next time I won't be so nice. There are no clear cut laws in Ohio explaining everything for a taxidermist. They are very vague, and each game warden is free to interprit them how ever he sees fit. Really knid of scarey.

Respect is the key word. I've been checked here and there in the woods and on the water. Most of these times I was treated with respect. A couple of times though I was treated like dirt an the warden had a god complex or something.
If a warden parks his truck in my gate I'll move for him.
Regardless of what most federal officers want you to believe, the Elected county sheriff is the highest ranking law enforcement officer in every county in the USA, look it up.

I BET I HAVE BEEN CHECKED 100 TIMES, ONLY ONE TIME WAS THE GAME WARDEN A (INSERT FOUR LETTER WORD HERE). WE WERE SHOOTING DOVES AND ONE FELL ON PRIVATE PROPERTY, WARDEN WAS TALKING TO US WHEN MY BUDDY SHOT THE DOVE, HE LOOKED AT HIM AND SAID IF YOU GO GET IT, I GOT YOU FOR TRESPASSING AND IF YOU DONT GO GET IT, I GOT YOU FOR WANTON WASTE. WE ASKED WHICH FINE IS CHEAPER ,HE SAID THEY ARE THE SAME. THE BEST WARDEN EXPERIENCE I HAD WAS A TIME WE WERE RABBIT HUNTING NEXT TO A AIRSTRIP.(WE HAD CLUB LAND ON BOTH SIDES OF AIRSTRIP.), BEAGLES RAN A RABBIT ACROSS THE RUNWAY,SO WE WENT ACROSS THE RUNWAY ALSO (BAD MISTAKE) THE COPS CAME HAULIN TAIL UP TO US 10 MIN AFTER CROSSING RUNWAY WITH THERE GUNS DRAWN , I THOUGHT WE WERE GONNA BE TARGET PRACTICE. THEY TOOK OUR GUNS MADE US STAND AGAINST POLICE CAR, A GAME WARDEN CAME UP SHORTLY AFTER AND KNEW WE WERE ONLY AFTER DOGS ,HE PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR US, WROTE US WARNING TICKETS AND GOT OUR FREEDOM AND GUNS BACK.

TAKE MY ADVICE DONT WALK ACROSS AIRPORT RUNWAY WITH A GUN. IT IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE TO JUST WALK ACROSS A RUNWAY. THIS WAS LONG BEFORE 9-11 HAPPENED. THEY MIGHT SHOOT FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER NOWADAYS.

I know both of the game wardens in my county pretty well. They are super good guys and they can come on my land anytime they want. I've asked them to keep an eye on it, and they are glad to. Heck i even have their cell phone #'s. I like to help them out when i can. I'm a "snitch" lol

Been caught 8 times in my life, they were pretty nice every time, been checked a bunch more when legal, once was checked and legal, that the warden was a @#%$. Not too bad I guess.Once had the wife at the Truck for a look out, she fell a sleep, I got busted, Game Warden laughed his tail off, Ticketed me and gave my gun back, said see you later.

Thanks a lot, read this yesterday and got stop today coming out of the woods, he was cool though, check my license and I let him pull my gun out from behind the seat, just to show I aint trying to hide anything, I had 4 shell in the clip but none in the chamber, he laugh and said that was pushing it for having them in the clip. We talk for a little bit, he told me where I should go check out, and told me good luck.

The first time I had a run in, he pulled me over for speeding, dint give me a ticket, later the same one warned me at the checking station for not having a tag on a deer I was checking in. he said he not going to give me a ticket because I did go to the checking station, instead of going home, so all my run in has been ok, and they where cool to talk to.

while we are on the subject about wardens, when coonhunting only what license do you need in Iowa? I have always had fur harvester and habitat fee thats it. I was told I need a hunting license as well. I don't think thats correct. A warden didn't tell me that either, just a friend.

Yep I had a Game Warden Run in, Sorry I didnt see your post, mine is also titled Game Warden Run In.
We recieved no Citation, we were perfectly legal, but in our case the Game Warden didnt know the rules and had to call in to his station to find out what to do, and some Deer hunters that were Camping called in on us. I tried to change the title of my post, so I wouldnt infringe on yours, but the Edit Button wont let you change the title.

Ok here is what I found on the Iowa DNR website.
Lots of good reading there!

Furharvesters - All residents and nonresidents
regardless of age must have a Furharvester License to
trap or hunt furbearing animals. Residents 16 to 65
years old and all nonresidents regardless of age must
also have paid the Habitat Fee. A Hunting License is
not needed to hunt furbearers.

Good to know. I always have one anyway because I hunt other stuff. I should read up on regs. Does that mean if I bring my 9 year old and my 6 year old kids they both have to have a license.

Yeah, the state found a way to get more money by having little kids having to buy a $6 furharvesters license. Most COs I've talked to said they really wouldn't say to much if a kid didn't have one. Than again it's only $6 so may as well buy one.

They are more than welcome to park on my land and catch every last person that is abusing or breaking the wildlife laws. On a side note, Game Wardens have a pretty extensive training and dealings with people with guns and dogs. It probably did not bother him as bad as it would bother someone never put in that situation.

Well said!

Around here Game Wardens are pretty good people.
I had met one not long ago for the first time while coonhunting about 2 months ago. I was hunting the National Forest and our dogs got on some private property. so we went and got them. on the way out we seen headlights coming, so we turned our lights off, and ran as fast as we could towards the truck (we were going towards the GW) so that we could get off the property. we did not all make it. he got to us with 1 of us on private property and all of us trying te get our dogs across the gate.

We ended up getting a ticket for no hunting license (we didnt have a gun) and warning for not having a permit for hunting the national forest, and did say anything about us tresspassing.
cost me $125 and was forced to buy my hunting license (i needed them anyways) I cant complain at all about that run in.

Mr Wells,
I buy the Anual Public Hunting Permit, and the Trappers License every year.
I think the Racoon on the license helps when your explaining to the Game Warden that you are hunting Racoons.
It Cost $19 for the Trapers License, and $48 For the Anual Public Land Hunting Permit.
