I had an older dog, first real coondog, had ear canker bad. When his ears were in good shape he treed harder and louder, when they were dirty or sore he choked down the volume and intensity. I had to treat that rascals ears every other day, but he was a coondog...I went through alot of that old reddish purple ear cleaner.
This one is very true. I had a dog completely stop hunting, it was very aggrevating...the second or third time in a row that he did this I took him home in disgust, but while driving home I decided to give him a look over and have a talk with him. His ears looked clean but when I dug down in...you would not believe the dark crud I dug out of both his ears (one was much worse than the other though). I diagnosed it as very bad ear mites and treated him the next day with some fresh new ear mite/ ear cleaner. The next time out he almost was right back to his old self, and within a few nights he was normal again. I never would have beleived it but, bad dirty ears will surely and very strongly impact a dog's performance.
