As Rick Jordan posted on these also: ! When Bart owned them and they were at all the big hunts, they was the big talk in my area for awhile and at that time I only hunted TW's .. Bart had alot of handlers in my area so they were all being hunted hard the talk of coonhunters.... call it what you want good or bad ? but it did make it exciting to hit the hunts during that time in the competition world ...Then of course the often imitated but never duplicated SPANKY !!! SPANKY is who made up my mind to get my first blue pup.. Which was directly off SPANKY .. So glad I did ...sorry just reliving old memories .. Chris

I hunted with 13 when he's was very young. TRACK DRIVER for sure! Nice tree dog and not scared of the dark. Dave had a female named JOSIE that we were hunting at the time too though and I couldn't keep my mind off of her that night. So I didn't pay close enough attention as I was only about 11 or 12 but I remember that pup DRIVING tracks in those swamps that night.
Curley will always be one of my favorites.... Tight on the ground but hunt like a ROCKET and treed lots of ringtails! I remember the last time I hunted with him we must've walked 1 1/2 mile to him and I could see 2 great big coons up a little bitty cherry tree from across the feild with no light on.
Spanky.....if I had to pick a dog/handler team to represent u at the Big dance to this day it would be Jerry and Spanky. Almost untouchable when the two were out there together with a few coons around.
I always hear alot of good things about Rebel from Dave ( but he was before my time) and also heard ALOT of good about Kirby's spike dog but hunted with his Pete dog once but never spike.

I hunted with jet 4 , jet 5 and curley all in one dump one night I didn't realize I was seeing 3 history makers , lol I went to get a pup from edd mead. that was my Christmas pres when I was 16. my parents drove me up there from mo in a dodge pickup to get her and I will never forget how nice edd treated me. picked me and my dog at the motel and treated me the best that night. they couldn't have made a 16 year old boy any happier.

In 1971 I drew Hammer III at Pinebluff, Ark at the Fall Roundup. I was totally impressed. He dominated the cast. When we got back to the clubhouse, my Dad made arragments with Dave to buy a pup out of Hammer III. I still have the letter where Dave acknowleged the receipt of the $50. down payment. Over the years, we bought 4 pups from Dave.

Great reading! I'd like to hear more.... Any body have any stories about Sextons Blue Jimmy or Saltfork Southen Blue Scooter? My Bingo dog shows both in his 4 generation pedigree, along with Scout, Hawk, Bullet 2, Bullet & Chief. I love the history lesson on here! So many good hounds & houndsmen! Thank you all for sharing. I remember well. Mr J.W. williamson of Monticello, Ms. Had a little bluetick female by the Name of Pearl River Ruby. He had bred Ruby 3 or 4 times to T. C. Jones blue Blue without much success with the pups. I was probably getting close to 20 years old and I had been reading the adds that Mr. Dave Dean wrote in the books on Hammer 11 and Hammer 111. I got to trying to persuade Mr. willimson to bred Ruby to hammer 11. I succeded in doing so and when she came in season he asked me If I would take her to get her bred. I said I would and I was off to Dowling, Michigan. I got to meet the man with the dark glasses and the black hat. A friend ship started that still goes on today. I got to hunt with Hammer 11 and Hammer 111 that night. H ammer 111 was one fine looking hound. Hammer 11 was not as pretty as Hammer 111, but to me he was probably one of the best if not the best reproducer the bluetick breed has had. When we started to leave on our hunt that night Dave reached in the corner and pulled out an old 22 rifle, Now I dont know what model or anything like that, but it was old at that time and the stock was broke off about where you hold it in your hand. I didnt know wheather it would shoot or not, but I guess If he had it that it would shoot. The cross of Hammer 11 and Ruby blood is still flowing in my hounds today. Sorry about making this such a long story. Just thought it might be interesting. ------Jack

If that 22 was the same one that he had when I hunted with Hammer X it would shoot but me and Dave shot up a box of shells trying to hit a coon and never succeeded. Lol.

Some years back, late 90s, I drove to the Cabin to get my ole Bonnie female off of Hammer XIII bred to Hammer XVIII. Dave still had that sawed off 22 and I got a picture holding it,LOL! I got to see all the stud dogs he had at that time from 12 up to 20, I believe. Got to hunt with XVIII at Autumn Oaks one year but he and Wild N Blue Mindy got scratched for treeing a possum, LOL. Dave just laughed and signed the card DD and drew a picture of a possum beside his initial. Droop was in that cast too. I got to see most of Ron Taylors studs go from Levi on up to Dancer. Saw Super Jet 6 tree a coon one night in Feb at around 9 degrees, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet or should I say any snow! Ron Brown of Indiana could tell us all a thing or two about Dave Dean and his early Hammers, he hunted with a bunch of them also, ask Dave Woofter down in New Lexington OH. I owned pups and dogs off of many old Stud dogs that was top hounds, Hammer V, Hammer XIII, Morris' Blue River Boomer, Jet V & 6, Levi, Pride, Bullet, Caney Creek Trump, heck I can't remember, my head is hurting,LOL!! I'll see if HOOSIERBLUE will tell us some stories about the old days. Good post, thanks for bringing it back to the top Wayne!

I've hunted with Buzz,,posie,, spike,,david,,solid rock,,luke,,mash,,buddy and several other great hounds...
But i have to say that some of the very best i have hunted with are females... Northstar spring and Tracey were a couple of the best also Northstar blue star and Bixby hills Posie and Northstar Charity all great hounds...
I never got to hunt with rebel but sure would have liked to,, also i think Jim's old dog Northstar blue Buck gave a lot to the bluetick breed...
Also have hunted with a few Mad-Dogs back in the 70,s those vaughn boy's and there hounds are stand up great hunters....

a grandson of Tiffin River Tack... One of the best I ever owned and threw hounds superior to himself. His daughter Hannah could run a coon faster than most could blister a deer, she was amazing. Lived to be 14 years old and came in heat one time in her life.. If only !!!!

Got my start hunting with many of these blue dogs and helping to train and handle a few of them too. I spent many nights in the woods with Russ Downing, John Adametz, Steve Ringlestetter, Jerry Severson, Dave Nelson, Denny Kirby, and Dave Dean. I helped train Kirby's Spike at that Adametz farm when he was a pup. We called him Dudley back then.

He turned into a nice dog around 2-3 years of age. His daddy Buzz was a really rangy dog out of Mich Blue Rebel. Most of the dogs out of Rebel were rangy and a little (alot) on the trashy side. North Star Blue David and North Star Blue Star were both that way too. They weren't pleasure dogs you would want to hunt every night for fun and were hard going , hard handling dogs. In fact I could rarely get Dave Nelson to hunt Star or David for that reason during the week. Back then we called them competition dogs.

Seems like the Hammer II dogs split into the rangy leggy Mich Blue Rebel type or the more compact Hammer III/ Trapper/ Bruiser type of dog. They both won their share of hunts, but the Rebel bred dogs cut into your sleep. I don't think Spike was rangy like his dad, but he had plenty of hunt in him when he got older.

I'd say Dual Gr.Ch. Adametz Lil Bruiser was my all time favorite on that list and became the yardstick to which I measured dogs. Bruiser was double Hammer II bred and went back to the original Bruiser dog off of Hammer II. He was fast both ways and sneaky smart. He had a big mouth that could be heard a long ways, and was a pressure tree dog like no other. He had more natural ability than any dogs I hunted with back then. He was a fun dog to hunt every night and a competition dog deluxe. He was also a great looking dog that won many shows back then. He didn't get the recognition he deserved but he was one of the better blue dogs of that era. He was the sire of both Toad and Jessie.

Jessie produced some of the most natural early starting dogs I've ever seen. I followed her pups at 3-4 months of age running and treeing with the older dogs. Amos was out of her and Larry Platner's Mash dog. He finished out to be a good steady coondog and won some hunts for Steve. I spent many nights in the woods with him from the time he was a pup to when he finished to Gr.Nt.Ch..

The other dogs I really liked were Russ Treeing Blue Kate for natural independence/ split tree dog, Russ Treein Blue Luke for looks, speed and winding/ locating ability, and a dog that was Dave Nelson's favorite that very few know about named Northern Blue Bonnet.

Bonnet was a tough night after night coondog that went as far as needed and stayed treed all night long. We left her in the woods treed for hours while Dave went to town to refuel on gas and other things. She was out of Quail Creek Jimmy and was the mother to the Ranger dog of Wes Blues. She never failed to tree us a coon every time we cut her loose. When you cut her loose, you were going to find her somewhere treed with the meat. She wasn't coming back. Dave called her his old reliable.

I also liked that Gert dog of Jerry Nelson's and his Jet dogs. Those dogs were tough and had good noses in late fall and winter. They treed some really tough coon in those hills of Spring Valley,WI and some of the biggest and meanest coon I've ever seen. Those coon ran like crazy up there and some nights they would run them for 40-60 minutes before putting them up. It was like mini bear hunting. Bob tailed coon that were 40-50 pounds and ran like bear. Jerry and I had some great nights hunting those dogs.

They were all good coondogs in their time but those are the ones that stick in my mind that made an impact on me.

Got my start hunting with many of these blue dogs and helping to train and handle a few of them too. I spent many nights in the woods with Russ Downing, John Adametz, Steve Ringlestetter, Jerry Severson, Dave Nelson, Denny Kirby, and Dave Dean. I helped train Kirby's Spike at that Adametz farm when he was a pup. We called him Dudley back then.

He turned into a nice dog around 2-3 years of age. His daddy Buzz was a really rangy dog out of Mich Blue Rebel. Most of the dogs out of Rebel were rangy and a little (alot) on the trashy side. North Star Blue David and North Star Blue Star were both that way too. They weren't pleasure dogs you would want to hunt every night for fun and were hard going , hard handling dogs. In fact I could rarely get Dave Nelson to hunt Star or David for that reason during the week. Back then we called them competition dogs.

Seems like the Hammer II dogs split into the rangy leggy Mich Blue Rebel type or the more compact Hammer III/ Trapper/ Bruiser type of dog. They both won their share of hunts, but the Rebel bred dogs cut into your sleep. I don't think Spike was rangy like his dad, but he had plenty of hunt in him when he got older.

I'd say Dual Gr.Ch. Adametz Lil Bruiser was my all time favorite on that list and became the yardstick to which I measured dogs. Bruiser was double Hammer II bred and went back to the original Bruiser dog off of Hammer II. He was fast both ways and sneaky smart. He had a big mouth that could be heard a long ways, and was a pressure tree dog like no other. He had more natural ability than any dogs I hunted with back then. He was a fun dog to hunt every night and a competition dog deluxe. He was also a great looking dog that won many shows back then. He didn't get the recognition he deserved but he was one of the better blue dogs of that era. He was the sire of both Toad and Jessie.

Jessie produced some of the most natural early starting dogs I've ever seen. I followed her pups at 3-4 months of age running and treeing with the older dogs. Amos was out of her and Larry Platner's Mash dog. He finished out to be a good steady coondog and won some hunts for Steve. I spent many nights in the woods with him from the time he was a pup to when he finished to Gr.Nt.Ch..

The other dogs I really liked were Russ Treeing Blue Kate for natural independence/ split tree dog, Russ Treein Blue Luke for looks, speed and winding/ locating ability, and a dog that was Dave Nelson's favorite that very few know about named Northern Blue Bonnet.

Bonnet was a tough night after night coondog that went as far as needed and stayed treed all night long. We left her in the woods treed for hours while Dave went to town to refuel on gas and other things. She was out of Quail Creek Jimmy and was the mother to the Ranger dog of Wes Blues. She never failed to tree us a coon every time we cut her loose. When you cut her loose, you were going to find her somewhere treed with the meat. She wasn't coming back. Dave called her his old reliable.

I also liked that Gert dog of Jerry Nelson's and his Jet dogs. Those dogs were tough and had good noses in late fall and winter. They treed some really tough coon in those hills of Spring Valley,WI and some of the biggest and meanest coon I've ever seen. Those coon ran like crazy up there and some nights they would run them for 40-60 minutes before putting them up. It was like mini bear hunting. Bob tailed coon that were 40-50 pounds and ran like bear. Jerry and I had some great nights hunting those dogs.

They were all good coondogs in their time but those are the ones that stick in my mind that made an impact on me.
