My hounds are not any where close to being on the same playing field as my kids. I always get a kick out of the person that says they love their hounds as much as their kids. Give me a break!!!!!!!!! The person that says they will kill another human being because that person shot their dog just might need a vacation to the funny farm.....

On the other hand, let a mean dog get a hold of my kids and you will see what I love the most. The mayor did not go about it in the right way. He did not practice the three S's.

lol exactly! You said it Jerry!

Did the mayor handle this well? It doesn't seem so. Do I blame him for what he did? Nope not really! I don't care who the dogs chased, or how old the persons were. After about the second time, and you don't contain them. They have to go. If by the police, animal control, or the trusty old remington 1187. They have to go.
I got nothing against people having guard dogs. Dogs like that have fences to stay behind. If you stay out and they stay in, everybody is happy. I really doubt these dogs were guard dogs. Probably just mean dogs that were allowed to roam.

In Kansas, a person can shoot a dog if the dog (s) are chasing livestock without committing a crime. If there chasing children and you shoot the dog you will get arrested, may need a psychological evauation, be fined up to $5000 and could spend some time behind bars. If I understand this situation a dang ol Billy Goat has more legal protection than a two year old child.

Why didn't the fat town cop do something about the 4 complaints that were already on the dogs. And the town could be only 160 people and they might report 400 people live there. I live in carbondale just north west of there a few hours. We have 900 people in town but 1300 with carbondale address.

To all the PETA lovers who think this mayor did wrong! How many camplaints would be ok before they did anything to the dogs? Would you let your kids go pet Micheal Vicks dogs? If you truely love all anamial, why not?

What were those complaints about? the dogs being a nuisance and running at large, not chasing children.

Hey Plottluver dont go hugging Hokieman go hug a tree.............let me tell you one thing if there had been four reports or more already on mean dogs chasing and harassing people (kids or adults) around here id be ashamed at the residents and neighbors............let me witness a dog trying to attack a child there wont be a three day hotel bill for that dog ...........and im not talkin out my ass either i had as nice a coontreeing hound as anyone ever owned HUGE mouth DEAD accurate did not know what pressure was and he was granded before 2 had won quite a bit in PKC also ..........at 6 yrs old was getting very spooky and dangerous one day backed my 11 year old boy up in the corner of the pen blowing in his face and that boy loved him well.... he scared that boy and also made the very last mistake of his life.........the police station that let it go that far should be looking for work at the local fast food chains in my opinion PROTECT AND SERVE my ass! I say thats what this country is lacking most ...POLITICIANS WITH GUTS! ..............GO MAYOR let me know if you need donations for ammo in the future!

I wouldn't vote for him for Mayor. All we need is a Mayor who thinks he's Marshall Dillion and above the law and the state statutes and regulations.

You are right hokieman, i dont think they said that the dogs were actually "chasing the children," but the previous complaints said that they were showing aggressive behavior. I know there was some complaints about the dogs in the past, but they never made a police report about them. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No, what we need is more people who think the dogs have more rights than a child does, they call them PETA, they are the same one's that want to take your hunting rights away. there seems to be a few on here! Doesnt sound to me like the Mayor is to big of killer or he would have killed them the first time they chased the kids. I deal with this every day and it's alot easier to say what you would or would not do if your not there. In our town the Mayor is the chief of police. Sounds like no one wanted to claim these dogs for a reason. Im like the most of you on here, I wasnt there and dont know the facts, I just know that people have more rights than stray dogs.

The mayor should have been smart enough to slip back in his truck and drive off ... the trick to culling is to keep your mouth shut and don't brag about it .

Peta can pass all the laws they want , give dogs the right to vote for all I care ... but it won't change nothing at my house and I never seen a law written on a piece of paper stop a bullet.

Shot dogs.

Don't blame him at all. The dogs should have been put up. That's the owners fault.

I dont blame the mayor, a few years back we had my mother-in laws dog here, never had any problems with him, one day he lit into my male border collie, well I went over and broke up the fight and the son of gun bit at me! I let it slide, that was a mistake.
A few months later he bit my daughter! That dog is no longer with us! Thats the last time I have "let it slide".

There's nothing wrong with getting rid of aggressive dogs that are running loose endangering folks but my goodness dont stand out in the middle of the street with guns blazen in broad daylight, unless theres no choice. There's plenty of time in a day for this kind of work, like say 2:00a.m. lol... If the mayor would have used a bow and arrow or a stick to kill the dogs i bet there wouldnt have been anything said. Nowadays if a firearm is involved wether your in the right or wrong, there gonna slam the book on you and its only going to get worse as its lookin from here.........We got 3 of the most anti-gun folks in history sitting in the big house for atleast 4 yrs. so if you think gun rights arent going to change you better pinch yourself cause your dreaming!!!!

You know, with all the posts lately about bills being introduced in so many different states that are basically unconstitutional as far as owning dogs go, the comments on this one are interesting.

I'm not denying that if the dogs were aggressive to the point of attacking people, they needed to be put down. What I WILL say is that there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.

Either the person who owned these dogs had the same constitutional right of due process we all do, or none of us does.

It's that simple. And unless we can all understand that this is what we are fighting for and apply it to EVERYONE who owns a dog, we are doomed to fail. If this mayor gets away with destroying this man's property without so much as a warrant, it's open season on all of us.

So forget about whether he used a gun or a bow or even if the dogs were aggressive or not. The point is - the dogs were personal property and were destroyed by a member of a city government without due process. If they can do that to this man, they can do it to you and me. Think about that the next time someone posts about dogs being shot at while hunting.

Annie

The dog owner did not act responsibly by letting their dogs run loose, just as the mayor did not act responsibly by firing a weapon within the city limits. Who was the real danger here? Dogs or Mayor?

I dont know about Kansas but Tennessee has a state leash law so if your dog is running loose harrassing the neighborhood you will be charged for allowing animals to run at large. Due process, If a man just robbed a 7/11 and came out shooting wildly, do you think the police are going to read him his rights or explain the situation over the phone to a judge for a warrant. No!!! their going to take him out right there on the spot... Same goes for an aggressive dog harrassing the neighborhood, but as for this incident i dont know all the details so i'm not going to judge the mayor for what he did....
