I think as far as training a dog most of Indiana has an advantage over trying to train a dog in rougher areas of the country. You can put a dog on more coon giving the dog more experience in a shorter amount of time there. Another advantage is that it is so much easier physically for the hunters to stay out and keep going longer which turns into more experience for the dog.

I can not imagine a terrain more rough and grueling then the terrain I have started several young dogs. Several have sold for $3000.00 and more at eighteen months or less. Two in the last year. It wasnt the terrain that kept me from it, It was the terrain that made it possible.Just my opinion.

There are some peoples logic,

on here that does not add up, when they say Indiana has more/better coonhounds than the rest of the country. That is like me asking how many Indiana dogs have won the Grand American, Winter Classic. Texas State Championship, Ada Walker Days, etc.

There might have been some there, but I can't even remember a dog from Indiana being at Ada Walker Days. This is NOT SAYING THAT INDIANA DOESN'T HAVE ANY GOOD COONHOUNDS EITHER. It's more of a REGIONAL THING, & thats getting back to driving time & major events that are close to home. If you didn't have alot of big Hunts within 800-1500 miles, HOW MANY WOULD YOU BE ATTENDING, EVEN IF YOU HAD A TOP DOG??????????????????????

smoke i just pitch them names out there off top of my head. if i was to set down and look at all the world titles /pkc/acha /akc /ukc from day one it would be a long list of dogs. yes indiana has more coons than some states but ohio and ill and mich have just as many if not more this year and i think ky is starting to get more than there fair shair of coons too.. i think it has to do a lot with dog men knowing what to breed and how to train, not saying there are not people just as good in other states but maybe a little diff in style .

Northern Ohio also has the same training advantages as Northern Indiana. I'm from Southern Ohio in the hills and even though we have coon we can't get to the dogs as quick so we can get them on another track and tree. More tracks and trees obviously give a dog more experience in a shorter amount of time. Also, most hunters are not going to be able to hunt as long down here as you can in the flat country. You will just simply wear out faster. I've hunted in northern Ohio and I've hunted around Columbia City, IN and Manchester, IN and they are great places to hunt and train dogs. I do think that some other areas of the country that are rougher places to hunt are great to finish dogs out into coon dogs. I had a friend from Columbia City come down where I live once and after he hunted with me he said that he had gained a whole new appreciation for coon hunters in our area.

this sport is not about money. if you enjoy the sport you should do it. the best thing i can tell you is that if you are tired of not being able to go to the big hunts the best thing to do is go get a job put your 40 hours a week in get your hound ready to go........ and dont wait on some one to give you any thing because in our life time you might be waiting for a while..........................yes there are a few people in our area that does have money.............. do you know how they received it? you got it they worked for it....until then... try it!!

Hartrum when did you get a 40 hour a week job??? lol!!!! Been doing much hunting, up here it has been terrible, alot of nights would cut the pads pretty good. Finally got Whittington healed up from his 4 wheeler wreck down to Chucks so maybe he might start hunting alittle, he needs a dog though!!!!!!

i know 4 or 5 of the seven guys listed and they are all 40 hour a week guys with average jobs. one guy has an office job during the day and has a little huntin store on the side, one i believe is a painter, one is a bridge superintendant who works at least 60 hours a week or more and a couple i know nothing about. it aint about money, its their love for the sport, knowledge of hounds and how to train them, determination to win and i think at all the big hunts theres a wee tiny bit of luck that better be on your side that night!! i also believe the best hound/handler hittin the big hunts right now is hartrum and big mama and nether is from indiana.

I do believe Big Mamma came from Alabama or am I mistaken but of course I think coondogs come from all over not just one state or the other!!Most puppies were probably whelped in a different state started in another and then sold who knows where. But lets keep debating cause its nasty outside and can't go hunting so keep it coming!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the best hounds really came from the best hunting grounds, Iowa would have produced all the winners.

Hey Jim one thing for sure,I don't have much money here in Iowa. But there sure is some good coonhunting. My dogs all came from Missouri but I'm still trying to keep up with the import rules in this debate. So I'm not sure if they are Iowa dogs or Missouri dogs I'll try to keep up and see how it works out.Kind of reminds me of alot of casts I've been on I'm trying to figure out what rules were working with!!!LOL

JOHN,THATS THE BEST POST SO FAR........ELVIS, ALL THEM DID NOT COME FROM INDIANA THEY MIGHT HAVE MOVED THERE BUT DID NOT COME FROM THERE(BUT IM SURE YOU KNOW THAT)........GOOD DOGS COME FROM HARD HUNTERS THAT LIVE IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT PLACES,MONEY BUYS THE DOGS AND THEY MOVE AND GET NEW HANDLERS..........AND ANOTHER THING IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW MUCH YOU MAKE IF YOUR NOT DEDICATED TO IT ...HARTRUM, ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE MORE INPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE LIKE FAMILY TO SPEND THERE MONEY ON THAT THEY WORKED THERE SO CALLED 40 HR. A WEEK TO EARN SO I WOULD SAY THAT TAKES PRIORITY OVER HUNTIN.............

COONDOGS COME FROM ALL OVER AND JUST BECAUSE IT ENDS UP IN INDIANA DOESN'T MEAN INDIANA HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH MAKING HIM/SHE A COONDOG.

Being from Indiana, I think it's safe to say that the top dogs are not all from Indiana. There are coon dogs everywhere you look, and if you look long enough, and you look hard enough, you'll find "top" dogs in every location!

We have fooled ourselves into believing that winning a big hunt makes a dog a "top" dog... We've convinced ourselves that if a dog is "featured" in one of the coon hound magazines, that makes it a "top" hound.

There is another thread running right now about "top handlers"...and you know what sets them aside? They travel the country and hunt with "top hounds"...and they learn to recognize what a "top hound" is.

A top hound is not necessarily one that wins the most, but it could be.... A top hound is a dog that goes out and gets the job done in a pleasing manner.

A top dog can usually be tied or housed behind the house of a true coon hunter, someone who is willing to sacrifice night in and night out....one who goes hunting regardless of the fact that its raining or about to rain. One that goes on nights when others think he's "crazy".

Don't let the $400.00 color ads fool you! There are good dogs in every location....
