I think UKC does a nice job of moving the World Hunt around. I'm sure they look at coon populations and clubs with guides & judges to make the event a success for both hunters and them (UKC). Why would they not considering a hunter will spend money on gas, food, hotel plus the entry and then the time off from work. Who would want to spend all of the above to go to a location with the hopes of treeing a single coon in 2 hours of hunting ???? Top that off with possibly not treeing a coon during the single stage of hunting alone ??? Thus bringing the numbers down even more for the finals ???
Having lived in North Carolina (Central part) with very low coon numbers I traveled many times North for events and my dogs did ok...no big adjustment time needed, coon dogs are coon dogs, some go harder than others, some have colder noses than others and each night is different.
Just the other night we treed 12 in about 2 hours of hunting then 2 nights later we had a heck of a time getting 3 treed in over 3 hours of hunting. The moon, the drop in Temps (20 degrees) high winds and even a few snow flakes comeing down !!!
Living in the North does not mean you will blister a coon on every drop every night, and I live in what I'd call GREAT coon hunting. When I lived in NC I hunted NC, KY, VA, TN, SC, GA and AL and yes the hunting is tough, and some nights it was good, just as it has been hunting in IL, IN, OH, IA, WI so one thing to remember
We all hunt most of the week for pleasure and to keep our dogs in shape, and competition hunt Friday & Saturday nights, so the same dog that you hunt Mon-Tue-Wed- Thur is getting hunted 4 nights for pleasure and 2 nights for competition, what is the difference and what makes those 2 nights so different from the other 4 ?????
Coon hunting is pretty simple in my thinking...strike them when they open, and tree them when they look up, coon in tree is plus and the one with the most plus +++++ wins. Very simple in my way of thinking.
For all those who came to Elizabeth, Illinois thank you for allowing us to host the World Hunt and giving us the chance to show you our hunting. Hope you had a good hunt and maybe some day you'll get a chance to return, and we'll get a chance to do it again.
