I'd say hounds are cheaper than other dogs because most people that buy hounds are looking for a dog that can be a proficient hunter. Now the average for coonhound pups turning into actual coon dogs that can tree coon is probably around 10%-15%. So in reality you are buying a chance to have a coon dog.

The people buying lap dogs and dogs for pets are buying what they want when they take the dog home. They only require that it be a dog and look a certain way(choice of breed) and that is it. They are not buying a chance they are buying a pet.

Heck if I could look at a litter of hound pups and tell which ones were going to make coon dogs I'd gladly pay $1,000. Well not gladly but it would make more sense than spending $300 on a 1-10 chance.

There are other reasons as well. about 95% of the people buying dogs are just looking for pets so there is a huge number of people just looking for a dog. The 2%(probably less than that) of the total population that uses hounds for hunting makes many crosses and usually the supply is higher than the demand. This is especially true considering there are getting to be less places to hunt and rising costs of pretty much all items used for hunting with dogs. It's getting harder to financially justify taking a $300 chance when you can pay $1,500-$2,000 for a proven cooner. You will likely have that much and more into your pup before you know if it will make it or not...... if you take into account your time.

Corn Belt, I agree with you mostly, and you bring up good points, but, 1 in 10 for odds, WOW, I've never seen those types of odds. Maybe I just got lucky, but 7-9 out of 10 is more like what I've seen. Maybe its how their trained? or maybe if more was paid for dogs, people would take more time and care in training and more would turn out? I don't know, but I bet thats a possibility?

It may well be higher than 1-10. I was just going by the % of pups that earned titles off of some of the historical stud reproducers. Most of them were between 10%-20% if memory serves me right. I would bet most have not seen 7-9 pups out of 10 make it..... likely due in part to the reasons you mention. But if that's what you are seeing and producing you are definately ahead of the curve. Those numbers would put you at the top of any hound reproduction program I have heard of. I don't believe many if any of the current top reproducers are over 60%.
