John,
You are absolutely right. What type of hound you hunt depends on where you live, and some people live where they do not know if they have a true hard going dog that has no come back.
I say this from experience because I have lived in NE Indiana for 1 year, and have hunted in 27 states and Canada, and have lived in East Central Oklahoma, for the other 25 years of my life.
When I lived in Indiana you did not need a dog that would go 3 miles to tree one, matter of fact that is a good way to get one killed up there, trust me I pulled one off the highway. A guy could get by with hunting what would be a close to medium hunting dog and never know if his dog was the type to go like John said it is sometimes needed like here in the hills and hardwoods of Oklahoma.
Places I hunted that have a greater need for a go yonder type of dog would be: Ok, Ar, La, Ky, Tn, Ms, Al, Ga, NC, SC, WV, and even parts of Southern Indiana, and Southern Ohio, Tx, and Va. Some states I have mentioned however do have parts that are more populated with coon and possibly could get by with a close to medium hunter.
