Hello Ozark Preacher fans and interested bystanders. Wow! Lots of action here. I had Lisa post my first message a couple of days ago and now she just printed it all off for me. I’ll respond as short and sweet as I can to you folks who took the time to say something. I sure appreciate so many of you hunters showing an interest in this subject.
To Russell B: Yes, I knew the Chaos dog well. In fact, I sold him as a young dog ready to start. He’s dead now. I’ve had two full sisters and two full brothers to him that were Preacher colored. I still have one of the females. I’m aware of the Crow and at least a dozen other Preacher colored males that have been advertised at stud in the past two years. Just in the past month, there’s been at least four in the various hound magazines.
To Art Jr.: Yep, I bought Ozark Preacher from Jim Brinkley at Dixon, Missouri, in 1977 or 78.
To Ohme: I’m actually a little bit surprised at what you said. It’s been my experience that in order to get any Preacher colored pups in a litter, at least one of the parents must have that color. Preacher can be in the pedigree fifteen times, but if one of the parents of a litter doesn’t have his color, I’ve never seen that color show up. If you got one pup with the color, I assume one of the parents had it.
To Kenny G: Thanks! I think we’ll find a surprising amount of people interested in this.
To JTD: I don’t know a darn thing about how to make the computers work, but I bet other people will pop up with some pictures. In my WALK WITH WICK books, there are several pictures of the ole dog and some of his descendents.
To Russell B: That’s a good point, and there’s a lot of truth to that. The original Preacher dogs, in general, were medium hunters that handled great. Since then, they’ve been mixed with everything else in the Treeing Walkers and lots of them tend to hunt harder, but I don’t think there’s any denying that if the unique Preacher color is still there, some of his traits still are also. I see that on a regular basis. If those of us who know this bloodline and others who join us keep high standards and try to breed them as real enjoyable to own and hunt, not necessarily world beaters, I believe there’s something to be gained by it.
To Bob Country: Yep, ole Paul Jeffries pretty much made his living off Preacher descendents. I don’t know Mr. Martin but it sounds like I need to find out about him. Jeffries had quite a few descendents of Preacher that he trained up and sold for big bucks.
There are some Stylish dogs that don’t go back to Preacher, but over 90 percent of them do.
To Nitechamp Bud: No, I believe Preacher was in Missouri all his life. Paul Jeffries only had him a short time because he only had every dog a short time. Jim Brinkley owned him most of his life, but Bobby Long did hunt him and quite a few of Preacher’s descendents. Jim passed away a few years ago, and Bobby Long has gone wild over Beagles.
To Jesse Walter: Well sir, I don’t know exactly how to answer that, but let’s just say I’m writing letters a third of my life, I’m on the phone a third, and I simply don’t have time to be on the computer except a few times a year. I’m very sorry about that. I’d like to do more, but I’ve learned in general that the people who call or write me are more serious about whatever it is they want to correspond about. Also people on the computer expect almost instant answers, and my secretary’s only here three days a week so instant answers just aren’t in the cards.
To Briar: Well sir, I’m answering these posts as I come to them looking through several pages that Lisa printed out. I wouldn’t say I’m smart enough to know better, it’s just that I don’t have enough time. But EVERYONE who writes or calls gets my time. I guess I’ve been doing that so long that I’m fairly comfortable handling things that way.
To Chiggers: Wow! Get in touch with me. I know every dog you mentioned there. As you said, Preacher’s back there at least five or six times. You might have a dog there that has a real future if you’re interested in going in that direction.
That’s all we have time to respond to today. We’ll be back on Monday to finish replying to everyone.
