Camera

Some of you may wonder about the dates on these pictures, but the camera that I have is an old one. It takes pretty good pictures, but the dates kind of float around on it and I never know what date its going to come up with and I cant find anyone that knows how to set it, so I just don't worry about it. I just found out how to put pictures on here, and I enjoy looking at everyone else's pictures

Smoke and Doll V

Chris came by earlier tonight, so he and I went up the swamp a ways and hunted Smoke and Doll V tonight. When we got close to where we were going to hunt, They both struck off the back of the 4-wheeler. We turned them loose and the race was on. they moved him in about 200 yrds and Doll locked up treed with Smoke right behind her. We rode around on another road to get closer. We were about 75 yrds from where they were treed. We walked in to them and chris found the coon pretty quick. We petted up the dogs and left this one to run again. We moved down close to the creek where the dogs could get some water. It sure was hot out there tonight. We turned the dogs loose toward the creek, but before they got there the struck another track. They only went a short distance and Doll locked up treed again with Smoke right behind her. We walked in to them and they were treed on a big oak on the bank of the creek We shined for a while, but we never could get him to look. The dog were beginning to get real hot so we leashed them up and led them down to the creek so they could get some water. We decided to bring these two back to the house and take Sheba 11 out for a run. We took her to the same swamp just lower down than we were earlier and she hit a hot track and took it out of there. We followed her for about 300 yrds and she was getting in some bad country. It is so hot and dry, the track was beginning to give her some trouble and she was going thru one of the worst cutovers we have got around here. It was beginning to get about midnight and I knew that Chris had to work in the morning, so I told him that we would go back out by the house and he could go on home and get some rest and I would go around on another road and get Sheba. She was on her way back out when I got back around there. I loaded her up and came back out of there and headed to the river. I turned her down a small spring fed branch so that it would be a little wet. She hit a pretty good track and moved it in about 100 yrds and locked up treed. She was treed up a real big Turkey pine. I have treed coons up this tree before and some times I see the coon and some time I don't. and tonight I didn't, but it usually takes two people to find him. The tree is so big and full of vines. It usually takes one to shake vines and another to look, but tonight I couldn't make him look. I leashed Sheba up and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Smoke and Doll V

We got a pretty good little shower late this afternoon and it sure helped things out and cooled everything down. Tonight was a great night to hunt. Chris and his son Cole came by about dark and we loaded up Smoke and Doll and headed to the swamp. We turned loose off an ole woods road into an ole dried up slough and they went in about 100 yrds and struck a working track. They worked it on down the swamp about 400 yrds and I thought the way they were splitting up from time to time that they must be working a litter of coons. They worked it on through the swamp and into a tract of 20 year old planted pines. The track began to warm up and they pushed it on thru the pines to about 600 yrds and locked up treed. We listened to them tree for a few minutes and started to them. We rode to about 100 yrds of them and walked on in to them. There were several pines around this one and I figured he might be hard to find, but Chris found him pretty quick. We decided to shoot this one out to the dogs. Well Chris was shooting my rifle and I know that it don't miss. If it misses its always the shooter, Ask Jeremy, But I think Chris hit him in the end of the tail and out came the coon. He hit the ground and took off. We had the dogs tied, or I thought we did. I had just looped Smokes lead over a small bush. He pulled it off the bush and took off after the coon. Chris unleashed Doll and away she went. I wasn't too worried about Smoke with the lead on him, with the tracking equipment we have today, I was pretty sure if he got hung up I could find him. A few years ago it would have been a different story, but I,m pretty sure that the leash did give him some trouble flopping everywhere and him trying to run, but you couldn't tell it listening to them run that coon. They ran him back out of the pines and back into the swamp about 300 yrds and caught him on the ground. The coon had a lot of fight in him, but by the time we got there it was about over with. We leashed the dogs and got the coon and went back to the 4-wheelers. About the time we got back to the 4-wheelers it started raining pretty good and the longer we stood there the harder the rain got, so we decided to call it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. I turned him off a pond bank down the side of a big pond that a friend had told me he had seen some coons feeding around. Smoke went around the pond aways and struck a cold track. He worked it on around the pond and treed. I walked in to him and he was standing in the edge of the pond winding up in some trees near the edge of the pond. He had no idea where the coon was, but this was the only place that he could smell him. I shined the trees for a few minutes, but never saw anything. I leashed Smoke and we moved on down the swamp. I turned him loose again off the woods road into a dry branch. He went in about 100 yrds and fell treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a big Tuplar Gum. I backed off a ways where I could see the tree good and when I hit the squaller he looked at me with both eyes. I walked back to the tree and petted Smoke up some and we moved on down the swamp. I turned him loose again on the same branch farther down and again he went in about 100 yrds and opened about three times on track and fell treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a big Turkey Pine. I shined the tree a few minutes and hit the squaller and an ole sow and 2 little ones looked at me from about half way up. I guess that little rain we had yesterday and today had the coons moving some. It felt pretty good tonight from what it has been. We left these coons up to run again and called it a night.

Doll V and Sheba 11

Chris came by about dark and we loaded up Doll V and Sheba 11 and went to the swamp. We turned them off an ole woods road into a dry branch. They made about a 250 yrd circle and came back and we loaded them up and moved on down the swamp. We turned them off the road again into a dried up slough bed. They went in about 100 yrds and struck a pretty good track. Moved it on in another 150 yrds and locked up treed. I was watching Sheba 11 close on the garmin. This was her 1st time to be in the woods with another dog and she was doing a good job. You don't have any problem knowing when she climbs on the wood. We walked in to them and they were treed up a tuplar gum. I took a couple of pictures and Chris found the coon pretty quick. We petted the dogs up some and left this coon to run again. We went farther down the swamp and turned them into a slough that still had a little water in it. They struck an ole cold track and worked it out of there across a woods road into some 5 yr. old planted pines and treed out in the pines. Me and Chris made our way to the tree thru the briars and vines. We shined for a few minutes, but If he was there he had done moved thru the pines. We made our way back out of there and moved on down the swamp. We turned them loose again into an ole dry slough. They went in about 150 yrds and struck a cold track and started working. This was a real cold track, but they kept it moving. They worked the track for about 700 yrds. and treed solid. We moved on the 4-wheelers as far as we could and we were still about 250 yrds from the dogs. We got the sling blade and the rifle and made our way to the dogs. They were treed right on the bank of the river, up an Oak Tree about as big as you will see. Part off the tree was out over the river. I had no doubt that the coon was there, but I never figured we would ever see him, but I hit the squaller a few times and he looked at me from a big limb out over the river. I started squalling again and the coon got to walking back in to the main part of the tree. When he got back over the bank where he wouldn't fall in the river Chris knocked him out. We petted the dogs up some and made our way back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night. Chris and I had really enjoyed this last track and tree. Looks like Doll V and Sheba 11 have made their place in the long line of Misty River Hounds.

They sure look good on the wood Mr. Jack. I kind of guage our hunts on your post and Steve Bankston's post, being we are farely close to yall. Seems like when yall have good hunt and look at coons, we do the same. However, last night was beautiful, first track was a good one and we treed within 10 mins. Last track was cold and took them a while to tree. But we didn't look at either one.

Add on to last nights hunt

I got up this morning about 8:30. I fixed and had breakfast and walked outside. The first thing I saw was the rifle boot that I carry my rifle in on the 4-wheeler was open. I walked out there and looked and my rifle was not in the boot. The cover was laying in the little compartment under the boot. and the keeper was laying there with it. I tried hard to figure out where my rifle was, but my mine was blank(normal) Chris had carried the rifle to the last tree and I had carried the Sling blade, but I couldn't believe that we both had come all the way out of those swamps and loaded the dogs on back of the 4-wheeler right beside the gun boot and had come out from back in the swamps and had loaded the 4-wheelers on the trailer and came to the house and off loaded the 4-wheeler and put it under the shed and we had not noticed that the rifle cover was not on the boot. I called Chris and asked him if he remembered anything about the rifle. He told me he was sure he had brought it out and put it in the boot. I told him that the only other thing that could have happened was that someone had come into the yard and stole my rifle out of the boot sometime between the time that I went to bed and 8:30 this morning. I know that there are some people in this world that are brave enough or crazy enough to walk into my yard, under my shed with the night lite shinning under there in plain view of my bed room window and steal my rifle. Its just hard for me to believe. I called Chris and told him I was going to take my Garmin and go back in there and backtrack myself back to the tree just to be sure we hadn't left it. I did and there it was sitting where we had left it leaning up against the next tree over from the one they had treed up. Situation Solved. Have had it a long time, glad to have it back in the gun boot.

Thank you Tommy for the kind words on the hounds. It's kind of been a rough year. It's been pretty hot and dry and the coons are not moving much. I think the sow coons are beginning to come out with the little ones now and the weather is suppose to be cooling down some. Me and my brother is going to leave out sunday morning to go up to Northeast Kansas. We are going to go up there and do a little deer hunting and coonhunting with my ole buddy Rod Rose. My son and his family is going to come here and stay and take care of everything while I'm gone. Rod says he has a lot of deer and a lot of coons, so we should have a good time. I'll take a couple of hounds with me.

That sounds like a fun trip. It's funny I thought about Rod just the other day. I've not seen him in years and had wondered if he was still hunting. Good luck on your hunt.

Thank you

guys for the good wishes on my trip to Kansas, but we are going to postpone it for 1 week. We checked the weather up there and they are having a heat wave there this week. It's suppose to be in the low to mid 90's in the day time and in the 80's at night. It will be a lot cooler than that here, but they said next week it would be in the 70's in the daytime and 50's at night.
We took Tramp and Doll V out for a run tonight. This was the 2nd time Tramps been out since I finished him to Grand. They did a good job, We treed 4 and we looked at 2 of them. Doll got 2 strikes and 2 trees and Tramp got 2 strikes and 2 trees.

Smoke

Dropped him off an ole woods road into a dry slough, He went in about 100 yrds and fell treed I walked in to him and he was treed up a small tree with a kitten coon. I left him to run again and walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp. Turned him loose again and he went in about 100 yrds and struck a working track, moved it about 75 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a medium sized oak. I treed up this tree one time before and didn't see the coon last time. He was treed next to the road that the 4-wheeler was on. I shined the tree for several minutes and didn't find the coon. I leashed Smoke and walked back to the 4-wheeler. When I cranked the 4-wheeler and went by the tree that Smoke had treed up the coon was sitting right in the top looking at me with both eyes. I made one more drop and never got a bark. I think the little coons are really out now. I have treed several of them. Smoke came back in and we called it a night.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. She made two trees pretty quick. They could have been there, but I could not make either one of them look. I'll be glad when some of these leaves are gone. after the second tree we called it a night. It's mighty dry here. I don't see how these dogs smell anything.

Doll V and Sheba 11

Chris came by a little after dark and we loaded Doll V and Sheba 11 and headed down the road a few miles to some corn fields that had already been picked. We headed them around the edge of the corn field and swamp. They struck a cold track about 100 yds from where we released them and started working the track. This coon must have been out feeding before dark. They worked the track on around the woods edge about 300 yrds and crossed the field. As dry and dusty as it was I don't see how they could smell anything. The field that they crossed was probably 300 yrds wide at that point. They worked it on into the woods on the other side and swung left toward the road that we came in on and then swung back right and on up the swamp and the track started to get a little better. They moved the track on in about another 100 yrds and Sheba 11 locked up treed with Doll about 1 bark behind her. We listened to them tree for a minute and headed toward them. We rode the 4-wheelers to about 100 yrds of them and walked on in to them. They were treed up a pretty good sized Oak with a bigger oak that had been blowed over by some storm and it was laying against the tree that they were treed on and was leaning into some more oaks farther over. We shined the trees for a few minutes and Chris walked out to where he could see where the fallen tree was leaning into the other trees and there sat three sets of eyes looking back at him. We knew that this was a mama and little ones so we left them to run again. We moved on down the swamp and turned loose again and they went in about 500 yrds and stuck a real cold track in next to the river. They were really having a rough time with this track. They worked it on around another 200 yrds and treed. We went in to them and shined the tree, but if he was there we never could get him to look. We leashed the dogs and walked back to the 4-wheelers. Chris had to get up early in the morning to work so we called it a night.

Deer

I can't ever remember seeing as many deer as I am seeing now. Every time I leave the house, especially at night and some time during the day you will see them all along the road. We was hunting about 6 miles down the road last night and we probably seen 10 deer along the road and the corn field where we turned loose had already been combined and there must have been 40 deer out in that field where we turned the dogs loose. I've never had either one of these dogs to trash. Sheba 11 only just turned 1 year old on 8-30-15. Even if you have never had a trash problem Its not always a good idea to push the issue on young dogs, but we turned them into the field where the deer were. I knew we had shocking collars on both dogs just in case, but we never got a bark until they struck a cold coon track.

Its nice to have a hound that's naturally straight and leaves those whitetails alone, makes hunting a lot more relaxing and fun. I sure am glad you got that new computer and camera all figured out, enjoy looking at those good looking hounds of yours doing the job they were bred to do. Take Care.
