Smoke

I took Smoke out tonight for a run. Dropped him off an ole woods road close to a dried up branch. He went in on the branch and struck a cold track, worked it on in about another 150 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a big tree there on the side of the branch. I shined the tree for a few minutes, but if he was there I couldn't get him to look. I leashed Smoke and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the branch a ways and cast him again. He struck another cold track and worked it back up the branch a ways and circled to the left of the branch and came back down and came almost back to the road where I was and treed. He was about 125 yrds below me. I rode on down near him and saw the coon before I stopped the 4-wheeler. I walked in to where he was treed up a large oak. I petted him up and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp. I turned him into a Cypress grove that is usually surrounded by water from ankle to knee deep, but it was dry tonight. He went in about 125 yrds and just treed. I walked in to him, but I could see what he was treed up before I got there. I told Smoke about the time I got there, Well ole boy I believe this one has pulled a good one on you. He was treed up a hedge bush about 10 feet high. I looked closer and he had one of the smallest coons there in that hedge bush that I have ever treed. I petted smoke up good and we left that little fellow to grow up. We called it a night.

Ch.Gr.Nite Ch."PR"Smokey River Blue Tramp 11

Jeremy and I traveled up to Mendenhall, Ms. last night to their UKC Nite Hunt. Jeremy hunted Smoke. He said Smoke did good, but they wound up with a dead cast. I hunted Tramp and won my cast and this win finished him to Grand Nite Ch.. Tramp and Shadow both finished out to Grands as two year olds. Not a record, but not bad.

Rattle Snakes

Saturday night when I left my house to go to the hunt in Mendenhall, Ms.. I got about 4 miles down the road and I realized I had forgotten something, so I turned around and came back to the house. I was beginning to run a little late,so when I turned in the driveway I started to turn thru the front yard and come around the house to save some time and there in my front yard about 15 yrds from my front porch was one of the biggest Rattle Snakes that I have ever seen. He wasn't really all that long, probably 41/2 feet long, but he was bigger around than any snake that I've ever seen in this part of the country. He was coming from toward my barn and crawling thru the front yard. Now I have killed a few chicken snakes and moccasins
in my yard, but never anything like this. There have been a couple killed out on the black top that runs near my house and several thru the years from 50 to 100 yrds of my house. This one will make me think, the next time I start to go feed the dogs or check on things out side after dark in flip flops with out a light. I was beginning to run late for the hunt so I put the snake in a 5 gallon bucket and set it outside close to a tree in my front yard. I was going to take a picture of him sunday, but I didn't get a chance too and b Monday he was beginning to smell so late Monday evening I put him out on the road so the passerbys could see him, and you wouldn't believe how many people I heard slide their tires on that snake and after dark some one stopped out there and shot it after it had been dead for two days. You guys be careful out there in those woods and I guess around your house too. Those bell tails are moving.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. First drop turned off an ole woods road into a dry slough. Smoke went in about 150 yrds and struck cold track and began to work down the slough. after a short time the track began to warm up. He crossed the road I was on about 200 yrds down the road and went into some 20 year old planted pines and on thru the pines into a bunch of thick hedge bushes and treed. I walked in to him and the hedge bushes were so thick They were like a canopy about 10 feet off the ground. I didn't even try to look. I petted Smoke up some and we made our way back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp and dropped him off on the same slough. He hunted in about 350 yrds and never opened. He made a circle and came back. We moved in down the swamp and turned loose again. Smoke went about 150 yrds and opened 3 or 4 times and treed I walked in to him and he was treed up a big tuplar gum that had a hole in it about half way up. I decided to call it a night and started back toward the truck, about half way back to the truck I saw a coon cross the road. I dropped Smoke off and he ran the coon for about 200 yrds into a pine thicket and treed. I made my way in to him and he was treed up a large pine. I hit the squaller and he looked at me from about 3/4 of the way up the pine tree. I petted Smoke up some and we made our way back to the 4-wheeler and on to the truck and called it a night.

Sheba 11

I took Sheba 11 out for a run tonight. I left the house about dark and went across the road In front of the house. There is a feeder in there that I had filled up a few days ago and I thought a coon might be checking it out, but she went on by the feeder and on in a ways, but never got a bark. She came back by after a little bit and I loaded her up and went to the river. I turned her into an old dry slough and she went in a ways and struck an old cold track. She worked that track for about 500 yrds and it didn't seem to be getting any better, its beginning to get dry again here. I went in and caught her. I went up the swamp to a small branch that is spring fed and always has a small stream of water flowing. I turned her down it and she went in about 75 yrds and struck a hot track. She ran it good for about 200 yrds and locked down treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a huge oak at the edge of the woods on an old fence row at the edge of the woods. I looked for a while before finding him laying out on a big limb. Sheba had not had one in a while, so I knocked this one out to her. I walked in and petted her up and we called it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run last night. First drop was near a big hog waller, where hogs lay up and cool during the daytime. He went on thru there and struck a good track and went into the hedges at least that is what I call them, but I don't think that's really what they are. They don't make a tree or a strait up bush. The limbs may be anywhere from 1 to 6 inches thick and curl around and will get up to about 12 feet high. I' going to ask the land owner the next time I see him what these are. I'm sure they must plant them for deer refuge. they are sure rough to get thru and the coons can go up into one and just keep going. You can tell they were just planted there. There will be about a 3 acre spot of them in different places. The top is like a canopy. Anyway, Smoke ran the coon out into the middle of these and treed. I made my way into him and only shined for a minute, for I could see the coon could go anywhere he wanted and never touch the ground. I leashed him up and we went back to the 4-wheeler and on down the swamp. I went to another spot and dropped him off. He went in about 150 yrds and struck a cold track and worked it on in to about 300 yrds and treed. I went around and walked in to him and he was in another group of these hedges. I only shined a minute and we left out off there. I don't know wheather the moon being so bright had anything to do with them going into the hedges or not. We went on down the swamp and I dropped him off on an ole dried up slough and he went in a couple hundred yards and struck a cold track and worked it for about 300 yrds and it didn't get any better, so he finally gave up on it and came back and we called it a night.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. I took her to a feeder to start with, but she hunted that part of the woods out and never got a bark, so we went on down the swamp closer to the river and I turned her up an ole dry slough bed. she went in about 150 yrds and struck a cold track an worked it up the slough a ways and crossed out thru a pretty oak flat into another slough. This one has got some water in it. it is fed by some springs up at the head of it that keeps water in it year round. They will all be full of water this winter when the rains come and the river gets up. She went up this slough a ways and the track began to get better. She started crossing back toward the dry slough and just before she got there she locked up treed, and really treed hard. I went on up a three wheeler trail that goes up the side of the dry slough, and pulled up within 10 feet of her. That little girl was really blowing the top out of it. She was treed up a medium sized oak and I could see it pretty good all except the very top. I couldn't believe that as hard as she was treeing that she had missed that coon, but I couldn't find him.I loaded her up and went up the trail a few feet to a place I could turn around and when I had turned around I could see the top of the tree, there he set. We left him to run again. I don't shoot many coons out any way, but I sure do like to see them and be sure the dogs got him right. I gave her another pat and we called it a night.

Smoke and Doll V

Thank you Jarred.

Chris came by tonight and we took Smoke and Doll V out for a run. We cut them off an ole woods road into a dry branch. They went in about 250 yrds and struck a working track and moved it on in about 500 yrds and treed. We managed to get in pretty close to them on the 4-wheelers. They were treed in some hedges with briars and vines about 15 feet high. We shined in there for a few minutes, but he could have been anywhere. We loaded the dogs and moved on down the swamp. We cast them again in an ole dried up slough. they struck a pretty good track within about 100 yrds and moved through a real thick briar patch. and on into some 15 year old planted pines and treed. When we got there I guess the coon was moving thru the tops of these thick pine trees for they were on their hind legs winding and treeing. We shinned for a few minutes and gave up and went back to the 4-wheelers, loaded up and moved on down the swamp into a pretty cypress swamp and cast the dogs. They went in about 200 yrds and struck a working track and moved it on in another 200 yrds and treed. We rode around on another road and walked in to them. They were treed right near the edge of a big vine and briar thicket. The tree they were treed in was covered in vines. I walked out past the tree next to the thick stuff. Chris pulled a vine a few times and the coon jumped out and landed in the thick stuff close to where I was standing. The dogs didn't hear him when he jumped out and we were glad of it. We sure didn't want them to get treed out in the middle of all that. We leashed the dogs and went back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night. The moon has sure been bright the last couple of nights and it is getting mighty dry.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. Turned him off a woods road just south of here. He went in about 100 yrds an struck a good track and left out with it. He was turning back toward the black top road, I went back to the black top road, If I could hear any cars coming I was going to catch him, If not I was going to let him cross and tree him and I was going to shoot him out for there is a couple of coons in there that always cross the highway, but before he got to the highway he turned back and went north and deeper into the swamp. I looked at my Garmin and he was a little over 600 yrds and getting deeper in a hurry. I went back to where I had turned loose and he was 550 yrds. I moved on up the road and when I stopped again he was locked up treed. I rode on down the woods road until I was about 100 yrds from him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a small tree going up into a big Turkey Pine. I tried to find a place where I could see the tree, but it had so many small trees around it that I couldn't see any part of the tree, so I just petted smoke up some and told him I would try to do better next time. We went back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. Turned her off an old woods road into a mixture of hard woods and big pines. She went in a ways and struck a working track. Worked it on in 200 yrds and treed solid. I listened to her tree for a few minutes as that little girl was really blowing the top out. I would have liked to have listened to her for a while, but it was hot out there tonight and those woods are as dry as a bone. I rode on in to about 75 yrds of her and got my rifle and walked on in to her. She was still treeing hard, but she had done got hot. She was treed up a pretty good sized pine and I didn't figure I would ever find him because of all the other trees around it, but I finally got it to look at me from about 3/4 of the way up. I would have liked to put it out to her, but I could tell it was just a medium size coon and I was afraid that it was a sow coon that might have little ones some where, so we left it to run again. Sheba was hot and I was too so we called it a night.
