Yeah

As long as the legs are on Queen and Dozer and as muscular as Dozer is I bet them would be some athletes. Of course Kid is built right already. Your skunks sound about like the armadillo's down here. What's funny down here is to have the straight coonhounds from up north come down here and their hounds are in the ground all night. Until they figure out the difference in smell alot of hounds think armadillos are coons without fur.

All packed

and ready to head to the cabin. Will be leaving Wed. Cant wait to see Dozer & Queen to tree their first bear and Kid will get to go from start to finish for his first real bear season. Thanks again for these 3 fine dogs and will keep you posted. Chief and Ciscoe IV will get to be be at the trees. Wish me luck. Last year was great and I hope to have a repeat. I hope none get hurt or killed but there is always a good chance for that. Kid is wound up and hope he uses his head and not try and tackle the bear if and when Dozer does. I just hope Dozer uses his head also. Queen is a tree dog deluxe throws well over 100 bpm at the tree and I'll have the recorder on to show how loud these guys are. Hopefully I'll get film of them pulling a bear out of the tree. Each year some unlucky bear has a hard time climbing because he gets pulled down everytime he tries to climb. To see these dogs take down a 300# bear is something to see. Sometimes we get to pull the dogs off the bear just so the bear can climb. We've all been charged at but the dogs always stop the bear before he gets too close to us. I've only been worried once when a mean sow wouldnt back off and stood and stared me down while fighting the dogs in a stream at about 5 feet. For awhile I thought she was going to want to wrestle with me. LOLThis year I'll be carrying bear mace for the first time. Take care and you can be proud of these dogs and everyone knows where they came from. I make sure of that.

Kitty on the loose...

Well let Kitty out the front door to use the restroom night before last and she dissappeared. I called ran down the roads looked all around finally ended up finding her treed on a pond not to far from the house. We still haven't got any rain. I pulled her off of that and thought we were heading home. Then she took off a few feet from the tree, ran through the woods struck another one and ran it into a big briar patch. I called and called and finally got her out of there. It was so thick I couldn't walk through it. Well she ended up getting in over a 3 hour hunt in the middle of her feeding a bunch of pups. I could tell it was eating her up not hunting just didn't figure on her going without me, in 90 degree heat. Needless to say she'll be on a leash or chain now when outside.

Bear runnin

The big Dozer got to get face to face with a big bruin. He made me proud. The bear was way too big to climb and the dogs fought him for over 8 hours in the swamp and creek bottom. We were hunting a new area with a friend. When we cut the dogs loose we didnt know it was going to be that big of a bear. They finally chased him out of the swamp and we caught the dogs. One Blue dog collapsed and all were too beat to hunt the next day. None got hurt and you could watch the dogs scatter on the GPS when the bear charged, which was pretty neat. Kid did good and is getting better each time out. Queen did OK and should turn out to be a good bear dog. Had 2 or 3 bail out of the tree before we could get there. It was hot and we'd get up at 2am and start checking baits. No big bear tracks by us and thats OK since the little bears get our dogs in shape. No wolf problems or porky problems. Dozer wont let anyone he doesnt know leash him up. A friend went in the woods to get him and he barked at him letting him know not to come closer. He did follow him out and when he saw me he jumped in my truck in the front seat. He was beat and I left him in there for the ride back covered in mud. He deserved that much after doing so good. After Mike saw Dozer hunt for the first time, he decided Dozer should live at his house at the kennels. LOL He is better off there and Dozer likes Mike also. Queen will live there now also. Dozer isnt a me too dog and likes to get the bear tracks straightened out for himself and not follow the pack just because they are running. He was with the lead dogs most of the time which is tough for most dogs that never bear hunted before. He will be offered at stud after the season as I'd like to see others have some good Redbone bear dogs. We are running into more bobcats again also. Kid is doing good and with another week he shoud be right there with the rest. Both are rigging good and Kids hair stands up when he lets out the bawls. He hates those bears. It was a tough week to get the pups at the trees but their time will come. We will keep you updated on how they are doing. Take care

Sounds like some kind of a Bear Run!

Sound like Dozer's got enough independence like most of mine he doesn't just believe anything that the others tell him. That works out well in the coonhunts. Once he gets use to them that'll start to change. These things I'm breeding will sure goooo! Like alot of other things I didn't know any different until I was around alot of other hounds and found out the heart they have. They'll go even when others have fell out or completely collasped. That bleeds over into treeing and running that is sure hard to beat. There's a reason my hounds have been acussed of getting steriods and running deer. They are more muscular and harder going than most. But when they win on the bench or in the woods it's from the genetics not fancy handling or showing. Crazy thing is it all started with a dog a guy in my dad's church gave me for free. She turned into a hard running, coon treeing machine that got me hooked on this line. To bad she disappeared at a big hunt with four wins toward Grand Nite. Thanks for giving Dozer a shot that he'd never get back here with my physical limitations.

I left

this part out last time. On the way to check baits the first day Dozer open out of the box. I knew when he barked it wasnt a good track. Being his first day I knew better than to let him go but after thinking about it and just having a good feeling about him striking I cut him loose. I watched him work a track thru the woods to the bait and he would circle and take the track out and come back and keep taking the track ( there are 3 foot wide paths the bears always use) out trying to figure it out. I knew it was a very old track and he worked that track until he lost it a half mile down the dusty road. Nothing to brag about but from that point on I knew he would turn out. It was something watching him work that track out especially since he never smelled a bear before. If I would of had any other dog I wouldnt have turned it loose. The roads are so dusty you cant see anything if someone is driving in front of you. I was suprised he took the track as far as he did. I figured the track had to be 10 hours old. Dozer is having fun and as soon as the lights in the cabin come on in the morning he is barking letting us know he is ready to rock and roll with the rest of the dogs. Sure am glad he is here and doing good. I still thank God he handled that big bear like a pro and didnt get hurt. He knows what its all about now. It takes a special dog to be a bear dog and do it right. We expect him to be one of the best. I start school Monday and will be done August 12. I'll be learning to use newer types of fleshing tools and new ways of tanning instead of using the old ways of fleshing and tanning like I do now. It will speed things up for me. dogs split

treed. 2 bear 2 trees. You know who was there. They came from your kennel. Both on different trees. I guess they just wouldnt leave the hair on the bear and the bears had to hurry up the tree. In a hurry to pack and not forget anything and then headed to some Taxidermy classes. Still trying to talk my brother into getting rid of the off colored dogs. 2 are 1/2 Plott and 1/2 Shorthair but they can rock and roll. They are fast but the Dozer and Kid wont be outrun. We are lucky to have had so much success with our dogs. Ciscoe 3 is 8 going on 9 and slowing down but is still hunting as hard as he can. Vitamin b has been pulled off the shelves and I am trying a new mix for the dogs. Its Amino Plus concentrate. Made by AGRIpharm. 16.9 0z for $6.00 It has amino acids, electrolytes and B complex. Suppose to help the dogs recuperate. Will let you know how it works. You use 2.3mg per dog and put it in their mouth instead of injecting like the vitamin B. Also trying a new all natural flea, tick soltution. Its Rose Geranium oil. 2 to 3 drops and its supposed to keep the bugs off. Never found anything that keeps deer and horse flys off completely yet. My nephew Connor who is 7 and his sister Anna who is 4 lost their Redbone Bob due to having its lungs fill up with fluid. The vets didnt know why and they lost him before they could find out why and fix it. I didnt know this and he was sitting next to me and his dad and he said. Dad Bob is watching us and is dad said yep he sure is. I felt so bad for him and Queen is living with them now and the Kids love her and so do their parents. He just lives a few miles from Mike and has a real nice kennel setup which goes into their garage. I guess she did come here for a reason Steve. Thank you for letting me get her from you.. The kids are very happy with her and it makes it easier on them since they lost their buddy. Take care and will call sometime this week.

Dozer's: moma, grandma and great grandma

They could all trail some crazy cold stuff if the coon just weren't out. They pick-up some that you would think no way could they tree that, move it on around through the woods with speed and come treed on it. It might be 1 to 1 1/2 hours and more than a mile or better from where they started but they'd tree it. Daisy is a little hotter nosed but he has that strong nose. His grandma was probably cast with a minimum of about 45 different hounds and only one time did I ever see anything get in front of her on a track so she wasn't slow but had a nose if needed. That's what helped her have a 7-0 record much of which was bigger hunts before she died at barely 2. Hope your school goes well for ya. Maybe I'll be able to make it up there next year for a bear hunt. Just to busy on the farm with just getting the extra land I now have, to make it this year.

That's what it's all about..

I just sold the last I believe of Kitty's pups the other day. Most all of them went around here to younger men, who have heard I was around again and run me down, now some of which started hunting with me when they were 10 or even just friends. The last one I sold to a guy that was one of those 10 year olds whose now in his mid 20's. We were talking about the hounds and he quickly got on wanting a pup. I thought everything was good and then he said now these are Redbones right. Cause I don't want something else. I assured him they were a smile came back to his face and he said good I just had to make sure. I couldn't have been prouder. I love being a good influence in kids lives. That's why I joined the National Guard to help out families in need, that's why I teach, and a big part of why I love hunting these old hounds. Now that I'm a bit older I even get the reward of seeing it come full circle, and I'm still young yet. Family, friends, and positively influencing future generations is where its at. That's why I hunt becuase I like it and what it stands for. Not for trophies or recognition but some of that along the way is just icing on the cake. I sure thank the Lord each day that I can still get around and do this for as long as I'm able. However, I am getting to the point that even if I can't make it to the woods anymore that some of what I've worked on will be around for many years to come. What a wonderful country we live in! P.S. Dave, We've already had a years worth of 100+ days and we aren't even half way through July. Normally it and August are our hottest months. We also haven't had but three rains in over two months and only one of those was anywhere near an inch. So it may be a bit before I have much hunting news really. Sure wish I was up north right now. I'll be going some but not regular. You'll literally kill a hound in this heat even at night.

I got your little girl here in the house. I might have one extra but I think it's gone too. I have one guy down here that heard about my hounds from several others locally and said he probably wants two. My family has been running hounds in this area since back in the 1800's so when the locals start talking about my hounds being better than others my family has run people listen. Of course it helps that one of the guys my dad use to coonhunt with when he could still coonhunt was the local barber. I sure wish my dad could have coonhunted with me when I got into these competiton hunts. He had polio as a kid and by the time I got to where I could go much he couldn't get around near as well. I sure enojoyed the times he did get to go. One night he went with my old NtCh Ginger female before she started in the hunts. He couldn't believe all the deer she passed on that night and how good she would get in there. We got two of the biggest coon I ever shot that night in about and hour.

Notice only one is leaving the area.

People that have had the stuff I have or have been near it know what it is. That's why you may not see a ton of titled hounds from my stuff but if I'm hunting one it finishes out real easy, showing or hunting. That's why I really didn't know until more recently that most of the time in a litter that pretty well every hound doesn't make something. I always thought I had a bad litter if one or two out of 8 or so didn't make a good hound. Believe it or not, I was just accustomed to nearly every one in a litter making a good hound. That's the reason why though with Daisy I am trying harder to get her pups out to people who competition hunt. This way not only could one just take my word for it but hopefully you'll be able to see em on the reproducers list.

She is about the best mom I've had. Keeps up with everything but isn't to protective about it. Kind of like her personality just going along making it look easy. I only had two females out of this cross. I'm keeping one and Dean is getting the other. However, I should have some more pups from her next year. I'm running her in the World Hunt this year. I've already sent her money in for the Zones. Once she gets done with that then I plan on breeding her to the son of Twister I have here. He treed his first time to the woods at 4 1/2 months old. That'd put Twister and Rocky in there 4 times and pretty close.

Well the little guys are getting their first shots.

I also am pulling them off moma over the next few days. So hopefully Kitty and me with be back at it soon and catching some wins before the Zones. Time will tell.

A few more days

At that point we'll have had a month solid of 95+ degrees for a high. Still no rain. Once Kitty gets going good in this she'll be able to tree em in any condition. It hasn't been anywhere near this hot and dry here since I was a little kid. At this point I'm thinking come on Winter.

Dropped off the first pups

Only problem is the two I dropped off were so loud that even though they were in a barn a good ways away from the house the birthday boy could still her them plain. He came a running to see and barely got cut off from them before spoiling the surprise. His moma said boy those things won't quit barking do you here how loud they are. I just told her O yeah if they are from my stuff they are normally going to be loud. Later the boy was delighted to see his pup and said well look there it's Old Dan. Think we may have another one at the hunts in a few years. It sure is nice to have these youth hunts and shows now.

Well just got back from Colorado on vacation.

It sure was nice highs in the mid 70's lows in the 50's. To bad it's not like that here. Think I may have to buy me a place out there for the hot summers. Then I could hunt no matter how hot it was here. Even got to track down a bear while I was out scouting. I think we both evenly spooked each other. O and the trout I caught sure tasted good. Now it's back to wishing it'll cool off before Autumn Oaks.

Trees are dying and it's HOTTTTT.

You know it's dry when you are digging post holes and you have to go down 3 feet to hit any moisture, in an area with a pretty high water table. Unless things really go awry we are in the books for the hottest period and 4 or 5th dryiest summer ever. Between the economy and the weather it's like the Great Depression all over again. At least now I'm seeing the news people using the term I have been using in my classes for three years the "Great Recession". I don't know what they'll use for the next one.

It's about that time.....

As soon as this heat breaks me and Kitty are going to be in the woods plenty. Time for the tune up and run on the UKC World Hunt. Don't know how I'll do but Kitty has her end for sure. Good thing I've been to some bigger hunts before and showing Daisy at the big shows, should take the edge off some. Should be fun to see.

I just can't take it anymore....

I'm getting cabin fever from not hunting. Me and Kitty are going hunting at least once this weekend. It's finally supposed to drop down the 99 and 98 degrees for a high. Guess I'll see what she can handle.
