Dog trespass bill makes headway
A bill said to address the hunting dog/trespass issue has cleared the House Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources Committee and is expected to be looked on favorably by the full House.
HB 1329 was introduced by Matthew Fariss, R-Campbell County at the request of the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance.
The measure establishes penalties for hunters charged with intentionally releasing hunting dogs onto the land of another without consent of the landowner. Multiple convictions could result in the lost of the offender’s hunting license.
Before this is viewed as a victory for landowners, read on. The bill also states that “the fact the hunting dogs are present on the land of another alone is not sufficient evidence to prove that the person acted intentionally.”
“It might be a fair start, but that’s going to be difficult to judge until we can see how enforceable it is,” said Aaron Bumgarner, director of the Virginia Landowners Association.
