Steve, If you could pick one hound {past or present} out of the Perryman line which one was the best all around coon hound and reproducer.

That one got me to thinking Robert! lol
I consider there to be two Perryman lines. The line my grandpa bred, ending in April of 1983 and what I've bred beginning in May of 1998 - present. There's a fifteen year span in between that my dad and older brother kept going until I started.
If we're talking about Grandpa Doyne Ray's hounds, according to the dog papers I have of his, and from what I've been taught my whole life, Tahsuda's Arkie was the most influential sire in Grandpa's breeding program. According to those I've spoken to that hunted with him personally, he was also a coondog in his own right.
History speaks for itself as far as Tahsuda's Arkie is concerned.
My personal hounds?
'PR'Perryman's Blue Rowdy was and is the type I strive to reproduce!
I can't take credit for being the breeder of Rowdy. That goes to Mr. Jess Rogers!
Only one litter was ever raised out of him from my Lady female. But linebreeding those offspring have developed a uniform line as far as looks and ability extremely consistent to Rowdy himself! That, in my opinion, is what a reproducer is. Not just coon treeing offspring, but all showing his likeness and type!
'PR'Perryman's Blue Bawler would be a close 2nd! Bawler had outstanding ability in the woods as well as what he reproduced!
You'll see ol Bawler several times in the pedigrees of the dogs on this thread for good reason. You'll also see Rowdy more frequently from here on out as I try to keep improving on what I have!
I appreciate the question Robert!!

I get on here from time to time, calling Steve's line...JUNK. But people who know me, knows that I'm joking with Steve. I run his line of dogs...they suit me very well. Steve is one of the most honest and stand up guys. I do hunt Steve's dogs(because I love training and hunting young dogs) Steve is very strict on what he hunts and breeds. He always tells me, Ken don't be sending Junk back out here for me to breed...lol he culls hard and he expects me to do the same, nuff said about that! Steve also is not to proud to outcross when he needs too. he watches what works with his bloodline and then tries to make the cross. example, the Bawler and Lena cross.... No you probably wont see a lot of big time gr.nite champions in his peds but you will see coondawgs! that's why I like taking his ole country coondawgs to the comp hunts and SOMETIMES win. Its funny to see the look on those walkers boys faces lol. Anyway Im proud to hunt Steves line of hounds and Im proud to call him my friend! And btw...NO I DO GET PAYED TO HUNT STEVES LINE, I HUNT THEM BECAUSE I CHOOSE TOO!! But Steve, you do know my address to send the check for me saying all this bullcrap!!! lol lol lol TREE THE PERRYMAN JUNK!!!!!!!!

You're right Ken. I'm always open to outcrosses that will add to or improve in certain areas. Other bloodlines have plenty to offer and most seem to cross well on these. There's always room for improvement if it can be done without loosing consistency of what I like in a hound.
I appreciate the comments! Check's in the mail by the way! LOL

I show them a couple cage coons, lay a couple drags, then take um to the woods. My oldest son has a Perryman bred hound, we got him when he was 2 and half years old, he had only seen 1 cage coon and never been hunted. The first night out he struck and ran a track, he didn't tree it. the 2nd night out, he ran AND treed. After that night, ole Charlie has never looked back. He's not titled(well he is bench champion) but make no mistake, ole Charlie is all coondawg. So my advice(for what it's worth), just take um to the woods..........btw, seems like these hounds do good on big game too. Steve has sent some hounds out west, that are doing a heck of job out there on bear and cat...

I do the same thing

Ive never took the time to lay scent drags, although a lot of people have luck with that. I just trap a coon and show it to them when they are 7,8 or 9 months old. If they bark at it, I'll turn it loose and see what happens. I don't do too much on them until they're a year old. I like for them to have a little time to mature mentally. Too much too soon will take you backwards quicker than it will forwards. When they show you they can run and tree a turn loose coon, I'll see what they can do in the woods. If they are started on coon before you hunt them, it also makes trash breaking easier!
Be patient! Don't get worked up if they don't tree the first few they see. And don't try to keep up with the folks bragging on what their six month old puppy is doing hunting every night. It's been my experience, the boys pushing pups hard that young don't have much to brag about a year later.

Training

I agree with Steve on the age of working pups. A lot of people get in a hurry and think a five month old is pup should act like a three year old dog.
