Tramp

Took Tramp out for a short run last night. We went down to a place down the river a ways. and as I was going down an old woods road that wound its way through the swamp near an old slough, Tramp began to whine. This is the way now days that he lets me know he smells a coon while on the 4-wheeler. He use to let out that ole big bawl, but he and I had a little talk about that, because my ears couldn't stand it. Now when he smells coon while on the 4-wheeler. He justs whines, so I stopped the 4-wheeler and dropped him off. He went back down the woods road about 75 yrds and into the woods and locked down treed. I walked back down the road and into the woods where he was at. He was treed up a medium sized gum tree. I tried to shine the tree, but it was so many trees around that I couldn't see anything. I walked back out to the road and there was a small clearing on the other side of the road and I backed out into the clearing to where I could just see the top of the gum tree and I hit the squaller and the coon looked at me from the very top of the gum tree. I had my rifle with me, but its about time for the sow coons to be with little ones. I didn't know wheather this was a sow coon or not, but I didn't want to take the chance, so we left this one to run again. I walked back into the tree and petted Tramp up a little and we moved on down the swamp. I turned Tramp loose again off another road and he wentin about 300 yrds and struck a cold track. He moved the track on in about 200 yrds toward the river and treed. He was treed just off a small woods road that was almost grown up with bushes and briars to thick to travel it, but I made it down it to within about 50 yrds of where he was treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a large tree That was so wrapped up with vinesand so thick in there that you could not see anything. I couldn't even tell what kind of tree it was, so I just petted Tramp up and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. I turned him loose on three feeders and he checked them and went on in hunting a couple hundred yrds on each one, but never got a bark. I think the coons are beginning to hit the berry patches, for not much feed was gone out of the feeders. The third feeder that I turned him loose on he didn't strike on it either, but he went on in about 150 yrds and struck a pretty good track. He drove it across an ole woods road and through a cut over that had grown up pretty thick in there. He went on through it and crossed another woods road and on in another 100 yrds and locked up treed. I road in to about 100 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a fair sized Gum tree. I walked in and leashed him and walked out in a small clearing and found the coon pretty quick. This was not the first coon that he had treed, but due to the coons being so hard to find. This was the first one that I have found, so it had to come out. Smoke was glad of this and I was glad that it was a big boar coon and not a sow coon. We loaded up and moved on down to another spot, but failed to get a strike there to, so we loaded up and headed home.

Sheba 11

Turned another coon loose for Sheba 11 this morning and she is getting better every time. I turned the coon loose and came back and got her and turned her loose. She left there like a streak and hit the coon track and away she went. About the time I turned her loose. I went back to the 4-wheeler and got some skeeter dope for they have done got bad. When I got back to the 4-wheeler, I heard her locate and start treeing. I walked on in to the tree, and she had gotten off the tree. I waited there because I knew that she had treed there pretty close. about that time here she come and locked up on a big oak right there pretty close to me. She started treeing hard. This was as hard as I had heard her tree. I walked in to her and petted her up some, and leashed her. She kept right on treeing. I looked for the coon for several minutes and never could find him. I don't know if he had crossed out into a couple of big pines that I never could get to where I could see up them or If he had went up the oak that she had treed up for a short distance and jumped out and went on, or what. I went back to her and petted her some more and led her out of the pen. I could have turned her loose to see if the coon had tapped or not, but I didn't want to put to many ideas in her head yet, For right now I just want her to think the coon just goes up one tree. There will be time enough for all that other later on. For now she is doing fine.

Tramp

Took Tramp out for a short run tonight. We went to the river swamp back of my house. I dropped him out going up an old slough. He went up the ole slough a couple hundred yrds. He was close to the other end of the slough when he struck an old cold track. He worked it on in a couple more hundred yrds and treed. I rode in to about 100 yrds of him and walked on in to the tree. He was treed up a huge Oak near the end of the ole slough. there were several other large oaks around it and I couldn't get to where I could see any thing. I'm already wishing for fall weather to get rid of some of these leaves. I petted ole Tramp up some and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on up the swamp. I turned hi loose off an ole woods road and he left out headed up river. He moved up river about 700 yrds and struck a cold track and moved it on up river about 300 yrds and treed. I rode on up to where I was 150 yrds of him and walked on in to him and he was treed up a tree that was leaning into some more trees and they were leaning into other trees. This part of the swamp was especially hard hit by Katrina and it still shows the destructive force of the mighty storm. It was just like a canopy in there, so I petted Tramp and we headed for the 4-wheeler. We was going to call it a night, but when we got about halfway back through the swamp. Tramp started to whine and I knew that he smelled a coon, so I stopped the 4-wheeler and dropped him of. He ran back down the road about 50 yrds and went into the woods about 30 yrds and locked up treed. I got my rifle. I was going to give him this one, but when I got to him, I knew pretty quick that he would have to be mighty lucky to get this one for it was another huge oak with others around it and leaves so thick in there that you could not even see the sky, so I didn't look very long. I petted Tramp and told him better luck next time. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Tramp and Gin

Chris came by tonight so we loaded up Tramp and Gin and headed to the swamp. We parked the truck along the side of a graveled road and unloaded the 4-wheelers and loaded the dogs on the 4-wheeler and headed out. We didn't get far down the road, Chris's 4-wheeler ran out of gas, so he parked it beside the graveled road and hopped on the front rack of mine and we went on to the woods. We turned the dogs loose off the side of an ole woods road. They went in about 250 yrds and struck a cold track. They were having a rough time with the track, but kept it moving. They made a circle thru the swamp and headed back toward where we had parked the truck, so we loaded up on my 4-wheeler and headed that way. When we got back to where the truck was parked we stopped and listened and they were treed about 250 yards in, right behind a guys house, now I never did like to hunt around houses and to get treed close to where someone lives really bothers me. Chris said he knew the guy and when Chris told me his name. I knew him too for I had mounted a couple of deer for him, but that didn't make me feel any better when we went thru his yard on the way to the tree. We made it to the tree without getting shot. They were treed up a medium sized oak that went into a large turkey pine. We shined for a few minutes and I told Chris we needed to get out of there, so we leashed up the dogs and went back thru the mans yard an on back to the truck. We loaded back on my 4-wheeler and headed to another part of the swamp. We turned the dogs loose from the side of a field into the swamp toward a big slough. The dogs struck pretty quick, but again it was a cold track. They worked it on in about 300 yrds and treed. We went around to another field on the back side of the slough and theywere treed close to the field. they were treed up a huge oak and I found the coon pretty quick, we left this one to run again. We petted the dogs, loaded them up and called it a night

Smoke

Took smoke out for a short run tonight. I put him on the feeders, but the coons are not hitting them very good. First drop, nothing, He hunted in a couple hundred yrds and not a bark. He came back after a little and I loaded him up and moved farther up the swamp. Turned him loose on another feeder and this one was hot. We were in next to an ole slough. He opened up and headed across the slough. I got my rifle and started after him. I didn't figure he would go far before he treed.(wrong) He pushed that coon across a couple more sloughs and across a big cutover. When I got to the cutover I looked at the Garmin and he was 750 yrds across the cutover. Too far to turn back now. the cutover wasn't too bad. It had probably been cut in the last 3 or 4 years. all the stumps had been push up and it had been replanted in pine trees. I walked across the cut overand he was still about 350 yrds. He was in bigger trees, but it was thick in there where he was at. He went on a tree in there, but he only barked about three times and moved on. He came out on the fire lane that I was walking down and when he saw me he came to me and I leashed him, for we were a long way from the 4-wheeler. We finally made it back to the 4-wheeler, loaded up and headed for another spot. and again he hunted out good, but didn't get a bark. We loaded up and headed for the river. We dropped out on another feeder, but again he hunted out about 350 yrds and didn't get a bark. We loaded up and moved in closer to the river. I dropped him off and he moved in about 100 yrds and struck a working track. He started moving it up an old slough. It wasn't a hot track, but he was moving it steady up the slough. He crossed the slough and continued on up the other side. He had went up the slough about 550 yrds and treed. I went up and old three wheeler trail until I was strait across from him and crossed the slough and walked on in to him. He was treed up a huge oak and I couldn't get to where I could see up the tree at all, so I petted Smoke up some and headed back across the slough to the 4-wheeler. As we were walking back to the 4-wheeler I saw two dillers crossing the path that we were walking down and I thought this would be a good time to check him out. I turned him loose and set the Tritronic on high, He ran in where they were at and turned around and came back to me like he wasn't interested, and that's a good thing. We loaded up and called it a night.

Congratulations Jeremy and Dual Grand Shadow

Jeremy and me loaded up Tramp 11 and Shadow today and traveled to the Mississippi State Hall of Fame hunt held in Meadville, Ms. Tramp did good, but he and I didn't win anything there, I showed Shadow on the bench and he won the Champion Show. This win finished Shadow to a grand bench champion. Jeremy hunted Shadow in the night hunt and he won the Nite Champion and also was high scoring dog of hunt. It was a year ago tonight that Jeremy started Shadow in competition, and tonight he finished to Dual Grand. Not a record, but not bad.

Thanks Guys

for the congrats, we appreciate them. Shadow is a nice hound. He is qualified for the world hunt and this will give Jeremy plenty of time to have him ready. We surely appreciate all of your support. Thanks again.

Tramp and Gin

Chris came by last night and we took Tramp and Gin out for a run. 1st drop we turned loose off an ole woods road that had a drainage ditch about 50 yrds out. The dogs went down it a piece and struck a cold track and worked it about another 150 yrds and treed. we walked in to them and they were treed up a medium sized oak where three of the grew togeather there on the bank of the drainage ditch. We shined for a few minutes, but the leaves were so thick, If he was there we didn't find him. We leashed the dogs and moved on down the swamp. We turned the dogs loose off another woods road onto the same drainage ditch further down and again they went down the ditch a couple hundred yrds and struck another cold track crossed the ditch and trailed back toward us and treed strait in front of us about 150 yrds in. We walked in to them and they were treed up a large gum. We shined for a while, he could have been there, but I think they missed this one. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp. We turned loose again off another woods road into a goodlooking swamp. They left and split up pretty quick. Tramp went to the left and Gin went to the right. They both made about a 400 yrd circle and came back without a bark. We loaded them up and moved on down the swamp. We turned loose again around the edge of an ole slough. This time we decided to just turn Tramp loose. Gin was not too happy with this decision. Tramp moved in about 400 yrds and struck a cold track, worked it on in a couple hundred yrds and treed. We went around on another woods road and got to about 50 yrds and walked on in to him. He was treed up a large Cypress that grew out in the edge of a large slough. You could see a lot of sign in the slough where wild hogs used the slough to lay up and stay cool during the heat of the day. We shine the big cypress for a while, but could never get to where we could see the tree, due to other trees around and there were no vines. We leashed Tramp and moved on down the swamp. We turned both dogs loose this time and they didn't go very far and struck a pretty good track. They moved the track on in a couple hundred yrds and treed. We walked in to them and they were treed up a large oak. I found a place where I could see one side of the tree pretty good and Chris shook a vine and he looked at me with both eyes. Chris walked out to look at him and he quit looking. I walked in and shook the vine and he looked at him. It looked like a big coon. We left him to run again. It was getting late and Chris had to work this morning so we called it a night.

COONS

Sounds like good tracks are still tough to come by. I'm having to work nights on weekends but will be free to hunt starting Monday night MR. Jack. Would like to get together for a hunt one night next week and will give you a call and see if we can make it happen. Take Care and talk to you soon.

Mr. Jack

Sounds like your getting some hunting in and you are seeing some coons. I always enjoy reading about your hunts and how the dogs do. Should be heading out on Thursday morning for Bluetick days. Not sure if Creek will be in heat or not but will be making the trip for sure.
Take Care,
Scott

Congratulations Chris and Tramp

Chris, Jeremy and me traveled to Mendenhall, Ms. last night to their UKC nite hunt. Jeremy hunted Gin in the hunt, but drew a bad cutover and didn't do any good. I just went along for the ride. Chris won the nite Ch. part of the hunt with Tramp. This gave Tramp 3 wins toward grand. I am real proud of these two. They have done a good job.

Tramp

Chris and I traveled to Brookhaven, Ms. last night to their UKC hunt. It was a Breast Cancer Benefit hunt. It was an all day event. These guys really know how to put on an event. I think they raised over $4ooo.oo for the Moak family. Well done fellows. I don't remember how many dogs that were in the bench show. There were 32 in the night hunt. That is a real good turn out in this area. We had a real good time there. Chris and Tramp won their cast, but another cast came in with more points. Again, congratulations to the Lincoln County coonhunters for putting on a great Benefit hunt.

Took Tramp out alone last night and had a good hunt. 1st drop, He went in about 200 yrds and just treed. I walked in to him and he was treed on a big oak beside a small branch that runs through the swamp. I didn't have any trouble finding this one. He was setting up there looking at me with both eyes. I left him to run again. We loaded up and moved on down the swamp. I turned him into a big slough. There was a lot of water in there after all the rain we have been having lately. He struck a pretty good track. I knew he would probably have trouble in there with all the fresh water. He kept it moving and headed south strait up the slough. I've been in there where he was at and its pretty rough especially with all the water flowing through there right now. He moved the track up the drainage for about 800 yrds and came out across the woods road that I was on into some about 20 year old planted pines, and it is rough in there. He moved it on in there about 200 yrds and I knew that it was going to get rougher and its all walking, so I decided to call him off and we went back and moved on down the swamp. I turned him loose again off the side of the woods road into some real pretty woods across from a big slough, again he went in about 150 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a large oak. I could only find one spot that I could see just a little of the tree. there was a lot of the tree that I couldn't see at all. We gave up trying to find him and loaded up and moved on down the swamp. Turned him a loose again into a pretty Cypress swamp. He went in about 150 yrds and struck a working track, went out toward the main woods road and made a big circle and headed toward the river.I came back out to the main woods road and listened and he was treed about 600 yards in on the bank of the river. I thought I could get closer to him on some of the smaller woods roads, so I road around on some of them, I knew that there was one that would put me a lot closer to him, but I couldn't find it. I came back to where I was at to start with and he was about 600 yrds in, so I started walking. He was treed on some vines going up into a large oak. there was several other large oaks around and they just made a big canopy there beside the river. Tramp had already been treed there over two hrs, so I didn't shine long before I leashed him and we made our way back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night. He struck one from the back of the 4-wheeler on the way out, but it was in a rough place and I decided not to turn loose on him.

Smoke

I took Smoke out for a short run last night. He struck a hot track and moved it out good, about 250 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a large pine. I looked for a little while and finally found the coon. It was a big coon, so I was pretty sure it was a big boar coon so I decided to knock it out to him and he liked that. He wrestled with the coon for a little while, and then carried him to the 4-wheeler. I think Smoke will make a good addition to the dogs here at Misty river Kennels. I'm glad Clayton decided to let me have him. I've always admired the dogs that are in his bloodlines. Cory Mailes dogs are on the top side and the bottom of his pedigree is old Smokey River, so if he keeps coming on it should work out good.
