Smoke
Took smoke out for a short run tonight. I put him on the feeders, but the coons are not hitting them very good. First drop, nothing, He hunted in a couple hundred yrds and not a bark. He came back after a little and I loaded him up and moved farther up the swamp. Turned him loose on another feeder and this one was hot. We were in next to an ole slough. He opened up and headed across the slough. I got my rifle and started after him. I didn't figure he would go far before he treed.(wrong) He pushed that coon across a couple more sloughs and across a big cutover. When I got to the cutover I looked at the Garmin and he was 750 yrds across the cutover. Too far to turn back now. the cutover wasn't too bad. It had probably been cut in the last 3 or 4 years. all the stumps had been push up and it had been replanted in pine trees. I walked across the cut overand he was still about 350 yrds. He was in bigger trees, but it was thick in there where he was at. He went on a tree in there, but he only barked about three times and moved on. He came out on the fire lane that I was walking down and when he saw me he came to me and I leashed him, for we were a long way from the 4-wheeler. We finally made it back to the 4-wheeler, loaded up and headed for another spot. and again he hunted out good, but didn't get a bark. We loaded up and headed for the river. We dropped out on another feeder, but again he hunted out about 350 yrds and didn't get a bark. We loaded up and moved in closer to the river. I dropped him off and he moved in about 100 yrds and struck a working track. He started moving it up an old slough. It wasn't a hot track, but he was moving it steady up the slough. He crossed the slough and continued on up the other side. He had went up the slough about 550 yrds and treed. I went up and old three wheeler trail until I was strait across from him and crossed the slough and walked on in to him. He was treed up a huge oak and I couldn't get to where I could see up the tree at all, so I petted Smoke up some and headed back across the slough to the 4-wheeler. As we were walking back to the 4-wheeler I saw two dillers crossing the path that we were walking down and I thought this would be a good time to check him out. I turned him loose and set the Tritronic on high, He ran in where they were at and turned around and came back to me like he wasn't interested, and that's a good thing. We loaded up and called it a night.
