Is it against UKC rules to carry one? If you locate the coon, then find him with your light, and everyone can see him, is that wrong?

It is not against the rules to carry it but is against the rules to use it. Think of it like a phone or mirror. You can have them on your person you just can't use it to help locate a coon.

It’s just another example of a different mindset of coonhunting. If it was up to some we’d probably still be hunting with lanterns.

I don’t own a thermal but have looked through a few while hunting and it is pretty cool.

I understand it’s a rule and everyone follows the rules in every hunt all the time. The use of these thermals are harmless.

No, that is ignorant and you'd know why if you have used a quality thermal. Its a tool not fool proof.

All cast members better be staying together then. I cant imagine how easy it would be to move dogs. Actually I can imagine it...……………….

Might as well let us use mechanical squallers then also. Majority want to use everything possible to score a tree but when it comes to minusing them, oh no that's a different story.

Just because there is a hole doesn’t mean it’s there or even a coon either. As mentioned earlier, it’s a tool that could help in some cases to identify an area that could “possibly” have a coon. It is not meant to score the tree. It only aids in locating. It is not 100%, but could help. That is all. It is ridiculous that some people can’t recognize that the big bad thermal isn’t gonna harm them and step out of the Stone Age to notice there are some things that can help the sport.

Bottom line: We want to find the coon or possum in some instances.

It's not ignorant, it's common sense. Just like people not using their Garmin to tree their dog 1.5 miles away... And don't for 1 moment, think that it shows a heat spot, every cast member with a dog in that tree, WILL see that coon ..
A small tree with leaves.. no heat, not big enough for a hole, but the cast would want to circle.. but with no leaves, impossible to hid a chipmunk, much less a coon, ... Yeah, keep thinking that was an ignorant statement.. seems people want help finding the coon, but not proving the dig slicked. $1,700 better find a chipmunk up a tree and not everyone can afford $1,700.. would the owner use it on every tree whether his dog is on it or not?

Why does it matter? Why does it bother people so much if someone uses it. You still have to see it. People are gonna cheat anyway. With or without a thermal. Garmin or no garmin. People cheat. This isn’t an honest sport in every cast and if you believe it is.....you haven’t participated lately. Lol. I don’t have a thermal, would like to but I rather spend my money on good dog food at the moment.

Why wouldn't you want the best dog to win? If they have a coon don't they deserve to be plussed? Like stated before they aren't used to plus them they are used to find a place to look... I've seen a couple trees where the coon was found clear as day on the thermal but too thick to see it. Therefor it wasn't plussed… Or yall just don't want to break down and spend $1,800...

It is very simple. I don't have a good enough thermal so I dont think that they should be allowed. Now if I owned one, I would be all for allowing them. It is just like when Garmins first came out. They weren't allowed until the majority of coonhunters had one. That is just human nature. If you don't have something, you don't want anyone else to have it either. Now is that ignorance or common sense?

It’s definitely not common sense.... it leans more on selfish. It shouldn’t be up to the few dictating what the mass gets to do. If I don’t like it, I’ll just take my toys and go elsewhere. Lol. I’d rather buy 18 bags of pro plan at the moment. Those thermals show those possums too, maybe that’s it. Lol

Humans are selfish by nature. They are born that way. You have to "teach" a toddler to share. But it isn't actually "selfish". You are not refusing to "share" unless you had one and didnt let another cast member use it.

Richard,

I’ve been there already. Fella found the coon and wasn’t gonna say anything. Luckily we found it for the other guy....then the man with the thermal said, “I already found it, just wanted to see if you guys could”. Oh well.

That happens with or without a thermal. I have even seen handlers say they can't or don't see a coon when you show it to them. I guess that it takes all kinds.

Thermals might put an end to handlers not seeing your coon. They also might put an end to scoring dark spots or spider eyes.

I wonder do yall even listen to what you or others say?

baseball , football , basketball , stock car racing....

All where sports that the average boy , girl , man , women could be a part of!

Sure , it took talent and a willpower to be the best of the best!
But , it was not ALL about the MONEY!!!!

It was about the LOVE of the SPORT! And what they liked , loved to do!

I read ALL the Time on here how "Y'ALL want the sport of Coon Hunting to be carried on to the younger generation......

Am i wrong?

But , y'all seem to support everything that makes it impossible for that to HAPPEN!!!
What does that kid need today to even think about being a part of the coon hunting sport?

Thousands of $$$$ to even have the Tools ? Not to mention the price of a Dog , food to take care of it!

So what does a kid need today to even think about starting in the sport?
100K to get started?
A farm kid better have parents that farm like 5000 acres to even consider it!

Just saying ....
A whole lot of you that say you want to promote and get kids involved!Als want it to COST SOOOO much!
That the KID has to be RICH , too even think about it!!!!!

.

Doc your only in a corner if you box yourself in a corner. I just came in from the garage making sure I have my spare lights charged. Why because tonight two guys from different walks of life are going coon hunting with me. One a local kid that went off to Indiana to college and is now home for a couple months. He coon hunted with me some when he was 12 and he coon hunted with me some just before he went to college. He has no coon hunting supplies. But he is going coon hunting. The other man just contacted me and wanted to coon hunt. He has had bear dogs but wants to try coon hunting. Not sure what he will bring for a light but he will have one of my spares to wear if he wants to. Doing anything is about the desire to do it. Don't need any equipment. Having a better way of knowing if the coon is in the tree can't hurt the sport. These trees down here are a tangled mess and finding coon that are there 50% of the time is a challenge.
By the way the young man home from collage has an older brother I met the day he graduated High School. He came by to get one of the $50 orange box LED Lights. He knew very little about coon hunting then. 3 years later still green he won 3rd in the Super Stakes hunt.

Your question. What does a kid need today to even think about coon hunting. Your answer: My phone number or the phone number of hundreds other guys out there just like me willing to help someone in this sport.

This all reminds me of the debates I heard reference instant replay in baseball (which has improved the game). ANYTHING to help make the right call is a step in the right direction. Critics should not say the advancement is not 100% so we can't use it... for if that is the standard we would have to shut down all competitions of any nature.

Its gonna end up like Garmin's. As long as the cast agrees your gonna be able to use them until UKC changes the rule.
