I have my hounds rig off the top and often turn my rear view mirrors up on both sides to keep up with who is doing what and it works great. It is fun to watch a good rig dog work, turning their heads this way and that, hunting for any trace of scent and then pin pointing that scent and opening with a roar, as that is the best part of the hunt to me.......

The photo above was taking last fall out the passenger window by me while rigging bear with a buddy. The bear track these dogs are riggin in this photo was late morning and nearly burnt off--but they blew their heads off when they hit it.

Keep'em Treed,
ike

I rig mine off the hood. Not sure that it's any better than from off the box, but I like watching them, and you can sure learn a LOT just by there body language. I have one dog that was trained to rig from off the hood, who won't even stand up on the back of the box. She doesn't like it back there for some reason.

To answer the question of why put them on the box instead of in the box. Well, two of my boxes don't allow for the dogs to stick there head out, and one does. My two best rig dogs, will rarely strike from in the box. They will get those redhot tracks that they can't help but smell, but I know they miss a lot of them in the box. From pups I teach my dogs it's not ok to bark IN the box. So they typically just sleep when in the box. Also the two older dogs hate to jockey for position, and getting jostled around by younger dogs that are sticking there head out. They also don't like the brush, or mud hitting them in the face. My old proven gals sure are spoiled. But they sure don't miss much when they get up on that hood.
