Been hunting all my life. I can't even remember my first time I just kinda grew up hunting with dogs. Deer & turkey hunting never interested me at all. I loved to coon, squirrel, and rabbit hunt all with dogs. If it doesn't involve a dog, I don't care for it. I have probally been in about 10 hunts in 40 years. I have been to alot of hunts though including the 1st UKC World Hunt. Jerry Clower was there if I remember correctly. I'd consider myself a pleasure hunter. Compitition hunting is to much like work. Keep up with this & that. Rules & more rules. Forget it I hunt to relax & get away from the daily grind.

Ive had UKC registered dogs since about about 1977. In my first hunt I went to I was about 14. I drew a guy named Owens, that I notice is on your Barred list. That kind of turned me off to Comp. Hunts. I will go every now and then, and and when I do go sometimes I win, but I just dont care for it. Even if I win. I would just rather Pleasure Hunt and relax. I can listen and tell which dog is doing the best job that suits me.

id like to do it more but its to much like running for office when i go hunting during the week its fun no fighting complaining ive said this before if the hunts were all about the dogs real coon dogs that is u dont need a long list of bendable rules u strike them u tree them thats it................. but i do like to go to the hunts and spectate love sitting there talking to everyone before and after the hunt reminds me of hunting with my grandpa go out go back to shed and sit around and bs a little

Started hunting with my father 39 years ago. I have had my own dogs for32 years. The last time I competition hunted had to be back in the 70's. I was hunting in a Grade Cast on a 3 hour hunt so you can tell that was a while ago.

i been around hounds all my life. been huntin since i was big enough to tag along my dad or brothers use to carry me when i was to small to walk to good. i know folks that comp hunt been told i ought to try it but never have. i like to listen to the hounds and watch em work and hear them tree and see them tree. i dont care who's dogs strikes first or trees first. its all luck anyways just which ever dogs comes across one first just cause one out strikes another or trees first dont make that dog any better coondog then the other way i see it. i have a few registered dogs and some that are not registered. some of the best i ever owned was not registered. papers dont make any difference to me if a dog can tree a coon thats all that counts to me. most folks that do comp hunt seem to get PO'd if you BS them some about their dogs. nor am i stuck on any certain breed of dog i am parcial to bluedogs and black and tans. i may BS one about a breed but it is just BS i like any dog that can tree a coon. i am 37 now be 38 in July.

I started coonhunting around 7 and now i'm 42. I've been to one hunt and a club meeting a couple years ago. Riding along June 10th to a hunt with a GOOD dog in her first hunt. Hopefully draw out with some good dogs, they'll need to be.lol. I could start the hunts if I came up with the right dog. I did buy the right pup but it was for my wife. If I brought her home from a rough cast she would kill me.

I'm 50 years old started hunting with my Dad as a small child at about six or seven years old. Hunted Dad's dogs for years then got my own at about 18 years old. Hunted hard for about 20 years (4 or 5 nights a week year round) mostly pleasure hunting. Hunted some in the hunts in my late 20's and early 30's never was real crazy about the hunts but I had some fun, seen some good dogs and met some really nice people. Then I took a break from hunting for a few years because of a divorce. (maybe all that hunting had something to do with that) ha, ha. Anyway, now I am back at it and consider myself strictly a pleasure hunter. I love to raise pups get em started and sell em, that's always been my true love of this sport. Won't rule out hunting in the hunts or at least having a younger man handle some dogs for me in the future but for now I'll just keep huntin these young dogs. I like this website and I think it's a good source of information for everyone old and young. I would caution the younger hunters not to believe everything they read on here. If they really want a good dog it takes good breeding and hard but wise hunting. Spending more time in the woods and less time playing on the computer will teach them most of what they need to know.

I am 21 and have been hunting for about 7 years. I got started through a girlfriends dad and brothers, who I still hunt with. I do not own any hounds of my own, but would love to. I do not competition hunt at all, however, I do attend nite hunts as a spectator. I have recently started guiding hunts for the Red Rock Coonhunters Club and would love to continue doing so. I like attending hunts and the club to visit with other coonhunters and have some of Gig's cookin'. I have help youth in a couple of youth hunts and enjoy seeing them hunt, but I can imagine what it is like hunting with adults in a comp hunt. The parents at the youth hunts don't want their kids to have fun and that is why I take kids to the youth hunts. I can't imagine hunting with the parents in a cast, it would take the fun out of hunting and make it a political brawl. I have had some of the best times of my life pleasure coonhunting, it is fun to hang out with your buddys, bull****, and listen to the dogs. There is nothing better than listening to a hound run track and the stickin it at the tree on a nice cool evening here in Iowa. My friends and I just sit on the tailgate or lean on a log and wait with the greatest anticipation, you can't beat that, except when you get close to the tree and the hounds bellow in your ear and you see those yellow eyes staring back at you from up in the tree. The stories I have told about coonhunting have gotten numerous other people interested in hunting and I have taken some of them out and they love it. Everytime I get together with friends we have some story to tell about the last hunt, or we just tell the same old ones over, becuase we had so much fun that night. The stories never get old and the memories will never quit as long as we are still hunting and having fun. Although, I am now attending college and don't hunt as much I still try to get in the woods as much as possible. been coonhuntin seens about 1970 won my first hun when i was ten years old in 1975 it was my third hunt won it with a walker dog named joe that belong to my dad.hunted the hunts hard up till about 1996 and did my fair share of winning when i had to slow down to haveing 3 kids with alot of school activitys going on but always have had dogs to hunt .2 of my kids are in college now and moved out and i am planning on hitting a few hunts this summer and get back in the swing of things.see you guys there..................

I believe that is my line. I was given the gift of coon hunting from my father over thirty years ago. He was a pleasure hunter and the majority of my hunting is running my hound for pleasure and doing pratice nite hunts with my brother. Now I did take a run at some compatition hunts in 2005 and the first part of 2006 my only hound was killed in the last one I attended 04162006 I'm still grieving but when my pup is ready I think I will be back to pleasure hunting at least until 2008.

Pleasure Hunt only.

I have only been into coon hunting for a year. I got into it for the sound of the hounds. I dont like competing against others due to jealousy and lies. I dont have any sure-fire comp dogs but they make me happy. My dogs dont have to tree first or strike first as long as they get it done eventually.

so far only pleasure hunt. do go to shows and bench the dogs out. have spectated on a few hunts. can't keep up with those young guys with my bad knee. have some trying to talk my daughter into comp. hunting. but i'll stick to pleasure hunting. tried this sport 3 yrs ago and got hooked. love to listen to the hounds.

I started several years ago with a paperless pound hound that was a trained coondog. He taught me to hunt and got me going to a club. He wasn't eligible for the comp hunts--I haven't ever seen a grade cast. Since then I've spectated a number of times, and I have a 2 year old PR redbone now, but I'm slow, with bad knees, hunting on steep ground, and an inexperienced handler, and my dog has his quirks that could be annoying to others in a comp hunt (not eager to load up if he isnt ready, for one!). For now, I'm content to spectate or tend the kitchen at the clubhouse and listen to the stories when they come back....I mostly pleasure hunt alone with my dog. Maybe we'll both learn enough and get in shape for the comp hunts, but I'm just as happy meandering in the woods trying to get to the dog at my own pace.

All most only pleasure hunt now, tired of all the hoopla, all of the cheating and the buddies at the clubs who only want their dog to win at what ever the cost. whether it be by the rules or not or try to make their own rules as they go.

I started coonhunting when I was 10 years old. 37 now. Got my 1st hound when I was about 16. I've always been a pleasure hunter, but I do participate in bench shows and field trials. Spectated on a few nite hunts and entered one of my dogs onst. The results weren't very good.

For pleasure hunting, my dogs do what pleases me. And that's all that counts. May not be nite hunt material yet, but maybe someday.

I have guided a nite hunt(non-hunting) and had a good time. In fact, I think I'd rather be a non-hunting guide - that way I don't have to worry about where my dog is at or what it's doing. I can just concentrate on doing my job as a guide.
