I remember a cast from years ago. This was a Nite Ch. cast with a non-hunting judge. It was a 3 hour cast but pay attention. The judge told them they were going to make a couple of quick (hopefully) drops on some drains in piney woods and go to a watermelon patch to finish the hunt. So, they started. They made a drop, scored it and called time out to move. In the first 45 minutes, they scored 4 coons. As it turns out; one dog had 900+ for those drops. The cast wanted to go to the watermelon patch then and struck a track that they ran for the remaining 2 hours and 15 minutes. never scoring another tree. Just imagine the potential if they had continued to make those quick drops.
I recall the winner but not the others on the cast.

I hate these posts that question the integrity of anybody that dares to have a dream cast in coon country and come in with a good score. I was hunting judge on a cast this Spring where a dog scored 1000+ in a 1 hour hunt. No it wasn't my dog, but I saw every coon and it was done in an hour! The dogs handler was a teenager who was just so excited his dog was able to score that. But all he (and I being judge) got was a huge circulation of cheating rumors. I had 1 guy so jealous he (on social media) called me a liar and wanted to fight me! We were in a total coon zoo and the dog was just cranking, he was just going 100 yards and falling treed with a coon every cut while the other dogs in the cast (mine included) had their heads spinning like what do we do in this many coon and what did the kid get for his dogs performance-called a liar and cheat, SAD!

Once in a lifetime hunt needs to be recorded. However these high scores seem to be happening way too often especially at events where high scores is what qualifies dogs.My opinion

This could very well just be my expectations and it helps I live where we have plenty of coon but 1000 + should absolutely not be a hard score to come up with when coon are moving. I always have a high end strike dog but last strike 1st tree on 8 coon is 1200 and 15 minute trees is not unheard of at all up here and I expect to make 3 to 4 trees an hour most with coon seen doesn't always happen but does prett often I can't remember all the the casts I've won with 1000 and more and honest most I scored was 1625+ and didn't hunt the last 21 minutes we were on feeders for a few of those coon and had a Lil packing going on.

Mike, I agree with you, no one should automatically label someone a liar just because of a score they think is to high. In thick coons some dogs shine while other dogs struggle. As a wise man once said, "Do not measure my corn in your bushel." Dave

I'd bet my life if it went to elimination hunt the scores would be much lower!

Rick, I have always wanted every big hunt to be an elimination type hunt. I have never thought it was fair to go by score. No one or no dog can do better than beat the dogs in their cast. Every cast does not get to hunt those "Special" spots that a few casts get to hunt. A score in one cast is not any way to decide the winner of any hunt. World hunts in both registries are elimination style any rightly so. Autumn Oaks, Grand American and the Winter Classic should be the same.Way to often a dog that scores high the first night gets dry holed the second night, coincidence or bad luck? Elimination style would be the only fair way to declare any dog the winner. Yes, you may still get dry holed, but score for cast winners would not determine the winner, the winner would have to hunt against other cast winners and could honestly be called the Champion. Dave

I was hunting Autumn Oaks in 2007 and we went to Kokomo and I had scored 875+ in 40 minutes and had taken another 225 on the turn out but a dog fight happened which my dog didn’t start and 3 dogs of the cast got scratched and thing was there was a coon in that tree. So that would’ve gave me 1100 in 50 minutes of hunt time

Sounds like you had a very good dog, that sure hurt getting scratched with that score. Dave

More feeders than ever

When they eliminate feeders , it will put everyone on an equal playing field. Mine don't come back; Some just don't have enough hunt, I think in the world's you cannot pick your guides.

Very simple

I would imagine that most of the Friday night Guides were also guiding on Saturday night. I would also bet that they went straight back to those places that got the high scores on the previous night. Do the math guys! Those same coons were not laid out like they were the previous night. Its called pressure. Also, most of those places get rested and fed, fed, fed, prior to the big hunt. So it makes perfect sense for Friday night to be big scores! Oh and I failed to mention that its pre-season with many dumb kitten coons that have never heard a hound or had a light shined on them. I would imagine that they found a hole somewhere on Saturday night!
