The worth of anything wether hounds or diamonds is established by what a buyer is willing to pay for it. Doesn't matter how much time or money you’ve invested.

A coonhound pup... we have HIGH expectations- no other sporting dog is expected to turn into as much as a coondog... it's a gamble for sure. Show me the odds are really really good, almost guaranteed they turn into stylish 10/10 on that list and I"d think they are worth much more.

I feel pups are getting over priced- but good finished dogs are under-priced.

I agree with this completely it is because of the gamble of getting what you want that makes them not worth the crazy prices other breeds are going for.
I personally think a puppy has to be bred really well or out of really good proven reproducer to be worth $600 - $1000

So if I pay $4,000 for a dog, then it has to be worth $4,000?

Every item has an intrinsic worth. It really has nothing to do with what you can sell it for. Some people pay a lot more for a dog than they are worth. Some people pay less for a dog than than they are worth. "An item is worth what someone will pay" is an old wives tale started by traders like PT Barnum. It sure sounds good but has no basis in fact.

There are 330,000,000 people in America. Only two have to agree on the price of anything for it to be a good deal for both parties. The other329,999,998 don't matter.

If you're a buyer, and you think the price is too high, you don't have to buy. If you're a seller, and the price is too low, you don't have to sell.

"Most" of the better class of hounds (from my experience) pretty much "stay put" (they aren't bought or sold).

From my experience, the better class of competition hounds that can win hunts are sold. They bring big money also. Good pleasure dogs are not sold however.

Yep, that's exactly the way I handled that 4X4 diesel Long Horn Ram my son-in-law just bought.

For me If I paíd $1,000 for a pup, I wanted guarrantee that it will track and tree like a 4 year old Coonhound!
But most “breeders” don’t standard behind their hounds.
I had the honor to buy pups from Dale Cameron and he stood behind them! One came out shy, and he sent me immediatly a 9 month pup that he had as a pick off litter was going to start working on him, and he became a great cat hound, but the other two were just a little better.
So would a breeder that sells a pup at $1,000 If it don’t makes a good coonhound will he give you another hound?
If that is the case I would buy from him, If not for me he is full of it. No pup is wotrth that kind of money If no guarrantee! Just a titile and money maker because most of the best hounds can’t reproduce as good as they are.
Ah but some that might be night champions, reproduce way better than themself.

Just my opinion.
