Dave you are on point.. The Timber Rattlers are primarily found in the lower third of the state and a few copper heads and Moccasins down there as well. I have a chunk of ground I hunt in the south west part of the state that is quite wet at times on the Wabash river that is prime habitat for all three.. Never seen any snake there and am ok with that.

Up here in my country we allegedly only have the Missassauga or swamp rattler.. This buck brush swamp and lake country fits them fine.. Still don't see one more than every few years.. And that is enough for me.

I lived in Mississippi for a few years (didn't coon hunt while there).. Saw more than enough rattlers, copperheads and moccasins to last me a lifetime fishing and turkey hunting.. I had a copperhead that lived in my camp fire wood pile. Made a man very careful while toting wood!!

I tend to think things out and develop theories based on experience, education and logic…

I used to think when a rattlesnake starts rattling if we immediately stand still the snake will warn but not strike…true many times but not always…

A couple weeks back a girl was bit twice on the ankle by a rattlesnake while on the dunes next to the beach…I’m thinking she must of stepped on it by accident…she was lifeflighted to Houston, Tx…

Same thing couple years back…a 14 year old kid was bitten right below the knee and he was lifeflighted to Houston as well…

That makes me think my snake boots won’t protect high enough for comfort…

Last thing you would expect on a beach vacation, but it can and does happen. South Carolina, Georgia and Florida islands have lots of rattlesnakes and it seems like Texas has their share as well. Kill them all from my point of view, let the nonvenomous snakes eat the rodents. Lol. Dave

I never knew that possums killed and ate poisonous snakes…it seems a possum would play dead as soon as he was bitten…
