Tar

There is absolutely no way they could legally do that, it would be called unjust enrichment which is illegal under the law. Do not worry about something they CAN NOT do, now they can create a new product and charge for that service as you would be getting something in exchange for paying a subscription fee, perfectly legal. Tar can I respectfully say that on both your points you are dead wrong.

Tar Quote: they said the new garmin coming out you are going to have to pay a monthly membership !!

Tar Quote Again: No really instead of charging you for a map card or Birdseye they are going to charge you a monthly fee !!

The only reason I care is because False information gets out into the world 10 times faster than facts. Then for the next few years I get calls everyday from someone confused by the BS wanting to know the truth. So starting false rumors about a product that isn't even in the market place. In my opinion is totally wrong.

Show me where they said they are not going to do it then and I will believe you I am just asking.

Tar before I can try to discuss these issues with you. I have to understand exactly what your are saying. My response posted spoke of two specific things you said. I know you are a moving target and you talk a lot of nonsense and always move and dodge just enough not to get nailed down.

Your first quote. I think I need your definition of a monthly membership. Are you saying if I buy some future Garmin called the ALPHA Whatever. I am going to have to pay a monthly membership to use it? If that is what your saying I stand by my statement. You are WRONG.

Second statement. I don't understand. There will always be extra map cards that are out now and some in the future that if you want them you purchase them. Birdseye now comes free with an ALPHA 100 and only cost if you renew your subscription in the future. Which most don't. I would think it would be free with future ALPHAS also.

Tar in the world we live there are always extras. I but a new truck and pay $70,000 for it. I get a truck that runs. Has a radio and a Navigation System like GMC OnStar. Now if I want a Siris XM radio coverage. I choose to pay a monthly fee had have it. Not mandatory, but an added feature. If I want basic navigation in my new truck I have it but if I want added features OnStar has like unlocking your car and getting help right away. I pay monthly fee for it. Many like updated services and features beyond what our AM, FM, VHF and Cell Phone signals can bring us. To get those you start dealing with Satellite Signals. Which is Siris Radio and OnStar. You pay a monthly fee for them. But you sure don't have to just to drive your truck to the store or go fishing. Like I said. I don't know about the ALPHA whatever but the Garmin InReach uses Satellite Signals and I know there is fees associated with that device. Because where people take and use the InReach there is no other option for communication. InReach starts with basic plan and then some more advanced plans. Someone that has the money to go far out into the outback of Alaska for example or out is a $200,000 dollar boat out into the Atlantic. A few dollars a month a for safety and the only communication they may have is cheap. For the coonhunters in the middle of metropolis that always have cell service or other communication services. They probably don't need to pay a fee for something you won't use. But the choice and peace of mind to have a one touch rescue service know your exact location. Might be worth a small fee for the comfort to the hunter and his family. But there is always a choice and you pay from Zero to a few bucks for them.

I like the unit I have not going to buy a new one.

I want to know if we are going to have to pay fees on the units we already have they all work off the same satilite would be easy to do.

I just need the basics don’t need all the bells and whistles.

My friend sells supply’s a bunch of them he showed me an article explaining their future plans.

I just want to know. No trap I just want to know the truth. I got $1,200 in my unit don’t want to pay fees on top of that.

Tar--I like the unit I have, not going to buy a new one. Bruce--If your happy with it and any new system doesn't make life easier. Then stick with the one you have. That is the smart thing to do.

Well let me chime in here , Just like apple kills there phones or batteries so you have to buy a new one Gamin has the same capability of killing the alphas 320 220 all collars etc by backdoor programming, ever wonder why each one has its on serial number programed to the ecm or its computer memory , the only reason for that is so they can control it if they so desire , Better read the owners manual to see exactly what you bought , you only paid for the hardware use not the software or full rights and they can change any thing inside it any time they want. Now im not saying there gona do it but they can!! Just like everyone said you would never pay for radio stations there is sirus and xm

Fireball, the proper term is called "planned obsolescence" I don't think the companies program it into the units on your updates, but they know very closely how long a collar/unit is going to last based on the materials they put into it..

Every washer and dryer, refrigerator, freezer, phone manufacturer has a statistical model of planned obsolescence that they use to forecast future production from along with other macro and micro economic data.. It's just business..

Garmin will eventually quit repairing and supporting certain models, they already have done this to a number of them.. I think your 320, DC50, T5, TT15 and alpha are safe for several years yet, but new and improved will continue to come out and older stuff will be let slide to the trash heap.. Just business.

Great post, you explained exactly what tech companies do. Nothing lasts forever and we should not expect it to last forever. Most computers are obsolete by the time you install and start running them. There is always going to be a product with more and faster features coming down the road. These companies spend millions on research and development to create new products that make our current products obsolete or at least not as attractive to us as they once were. How many coon hunters would be happy to go back to the days of no tracking collars, or how many coon hunters still use only the beep beep tracking systems? Just because some of us like a certain system does not mean a COMPANY can stay in business without creating a better system or one that offers new and better ways to suit their customer base. While some folks are content with a basic product, others want all the bells and whistles. Myself, I am looking forward to what Garmin and other companies can do to benefit all hunters and their dogs, we have come a long way, but WE can always do better. Dave

This is also why appliances used to last 30 or more years to now around 10 or 15 if you take care of them. Same with cars and trucks.

I'd say the 320's will be obsolete within 2 years. They already have the 430's out and now the 2nd gen Alphas are being produced. The "in-reach" is I think a heck of a deal if you go in remote areas with no cell service. Since you can text mobile phones using the feature.

Guys

In the early days of manufacting, things were pretty simple, there were not any electronic to go bad. Less parts and easier to work on, now you have tons of electronic components, no room to work on, cheaper to replace with something that has more features. Just try working on these new cars or trucks. Dave

Back on the mid 1970’s I worked in a big chemical company...it was said we had the biggest control room in the world...that was because our controlling devices each took a lot of room on account they were pneumatic and our plant was huge and complicated...over the years we transitioned to electronic instruments...but the bad thing is that we didn’t have AC and we kept our windows open during the summer and mosquitoes were terrible especially during night shift...

Around 1980 or so the manager walks in and says...I am going to add central heat and air to the control room...you guys really deserve it...I thought he was really awesome for saying that and especially when he follows through...

Then we started getting some little computers and found out we needed low humidity and cooler temperatures for them to work reliably...so I was really grateful for that technology...by 1983 we were totally computerized in a brand new control room that was built just for that and it was a lot smaller...

But you are right about our new automobiles...they can be a pain when some of the gadgets start failing...

What Garmin has realized is that there are only so many hunters and the sport is not growing so there buisness will not grow unless they find a new revenue stream, They now realize that they would benefit from a monthly or yearly revenue stream attached to these units , Its coming I promise.

That makes sense...hopefully there will be enough competition to keep the monthly price at a minimum...

Fireball I think your looking at this form a narrow point of view. I live in the South and there is a world of Deer and Fox hunters down here that have systems with 20 collar attached to them and may run two alphas at a time. Same in the Fox hunting world. The coon hunting market is probably the smaller market they have.
