It sounds like she is pretty smart.

I don't think Ol' Red's are around every corner but if they can find one they should probably bring it home. Funny you mentioned many hunters first dogs Cheyenne's first ones were whatever his dad traded for but he has many fond memories of hunting with his great uncles Jap and Bud Bennett and their Redbones as a young kid growing up. They would hunt from campfires down in the hills carrying an axe and carbide lights whooping at the dogs as they trailed through the Ozarks. Chey and his older brother would climb trees to knock out coons and race to trees in the dark to get in shape for wrestling and football lol. At the time he thought they were the best in the country people from all over would come down to hunt with them or buy pups. By the time he was able to buy his own dog his opinion of what he wanted to hunt had changed to a faster pace. Imagine if you have time to build a fire, drink coffee and eat biscuits while waiting on your dogs to get treed. He has great memories but way to slow for today's world or to put in a hunt.

Yeah but competition hunting sure has taken a lot of the pleasure out of coon hunting. Hunters used to brag about how pretty their hounds sounded and how many coons they treed. Now they brag about how fast they hunt and how many trees they make.

Most still prefer them to tree coons too, at least all that I know! The key is to take the time to enjoy your pleasure hunting take a kid or just your thermos of coffee just because a hunt is all about the time frames allotted does not mean you have to race to every tree when not in a hunt. The good ones should stay treed while you take the time to smell the roses so to speak. After our long sitting time and then as Kash made us tighten up on Red when he got his track going I took the time to teach him the name of various plants and trees that were growing in our woods. Now as my story told when he got treed in his excitement he did take off running to see what Red had treed. I've been hunting enough times to know that many of you men possess this same thing when your dogs get treed in your excitement you get in a hurry instead of knowing that they will be there no matter how long it takes. In getting them hunt ready slowing down and leaving them for awhile actually prepared them for competition hunts. I would bet that even in Cheyenne's campfire days the same thing took place when the quarry was treed the difference is that dogs tracking abilities are much faster today and no longer require a pack and enough time to build a fire to set around. Nostalgia may make you long for the olden days, part of it you can replicate but part of it most of you would never go back to either.

Camp fires while hunting

Lol. I am age 71 and I have coon hunted for over 60 years. I NEVER sat around a campfire while coon hunting, we never done anything like that. Coon hunting was always done at a fast pace. Now I did fox hunt some with some older men when I was younger, they would build a camp fire, sit around and listen to the fox hounds running, the dogs would come into hearing running and then go out of hearing. The men always listened to see what dog was leading the pack, they never had to walk like coon hunters do. Never knew any coon hunters that built fires waiting on dogs to tree, may have been some that did, but never anyone that I was aware of. Camp fires and eating and drinking was a fox hunters agenda, not a coon hunters plan. Dave

Dave I'm 71 also. The only fires we ever built was to keep from freezing to death when we had no idea where the stupid dogs were. Nothing worse in that day than being 40 miles from home and having no idea where the dogs been for the last 2 hours. But to tell the truth most of the time we just started the truck and turned on the heater.

They were men of the Buffalo Hills and were still living like those a 100 years ago 40 years ago plus they hunted Redbones lol. They hunted the same hills they lived in and did it from foot. The sections down there are huge and in many places there is still no driving around to get closer, you can hunt for miles if your man enough to try. Dalton isn't sure why anyone would hunt some of those places on purpose.
When he hunted with his dad's brothers they did alot of driving around in circles trying to find whatever they or his dad had traded for at the time no fires.

Camp fire ( lack of camp fire)

Funny story regarding a campfire or I should say lack of a campfire, as a young boy I was coon hunting one night with dad and the older men back in the mountains. We had to cross a fairly big creek that was ice cold even in the summer and this was in the winter time. I slipped and fell in the creek as we were crossing going to the dogs treed. I thought that I was going to freeze to death and begged them to stop and build a fire. Nothing doing but to go on to the tree, we shot the coon out and they told me to carry the coon back out and that would warm me up. Don't remember if it did, but I did carry the coon, which was hard for a small boy and took my mind off being cold. I sure would have liked to had a warm camp fire, but the men knew it would be better to go to the tree as fast as we could and get me back to a warm truck, they were right of course. Lol. Dave

I just got clear of one Sunday a 4 yr old female. I decided two years ago she wasn't gonna suit me but my partner raised her in the house and didn't want me to "get rid" of her. I thought we was stuck with her for the long haul. Buddy of mine was looking for a dog for his daughters and I talked my partner into it lol. Yesterday the girls treed two barn cats and last night two coons. They likely don't even need to tie her up she was loose half her life and never left mowed grass lol. I hope that dog knows how lucky she is. She was more comfortable on the couch watching wheel of fortune then she was in the woods

Tar i didn't mind selling them I got $40 in the round (1986)at the furbuyers could get three any night I wanted to go and be home in time to do my homework. I was raised by a single mother that worked 40 hours a week for $211. I'd give her $100 every night I went for letting me put my stinking redbone in her car the money didn't mean nothin to me and it wasn't til I got older that I learned just how much it did mean to my mother. I turned 51 last week I don't hunt like I used to but it still consumes my mind day and night and I still get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing I'm going that night.

If that old flip phone of yours gets videos I'll send you a clip of a one year old im playing with now loading up on a tree if that don't get your toes tapping my friend you better take up playing bingo lol

I am 62 I remember possums bringing $7 lol. My whole life I been competitive when deep and alone became the new fad there is no place for a crippled up fat kid. Except to set behind the desk and I think I done my share of that.

Good ole possum hunt sounds good.

Lol. Man, a good old possum hunt sure sounds good to me. I remember back in the day when you had dogs that treed coons and possums, more possums than coons as coons were scarce in these parts. Truthfully, a dog sounds just as good treed on a possum as they do treed on a coon. It was a rarity to ever tree slick back in those days, you just knew you were going to see eyes in every tree the dogs treed on. Competition hunts were the killer of possum treeing dogs, all of a sudden possums were off game. It sure would be nice to have a point system where possums counted as well as coons, coons having a higher point value. Maybe one day as hunting ground shrink and deep and lonely dogs become a thing of the past, possums may become a desired game to tree. Maybe we could get a multi game designation and make champion dual purpose dogs. You know possum just might become that other white meat the ways things are looking. You know where a man could buy a really nice possum dog? I just might be in the market with my bad knee, I prefer to tree close and often. Lol. Dave

Been raining here for 2 days. Though Papa is still crazy enough to go out Kash came back over to stay the night and we opted to stay home by the fire and read. Red is s the smart enough to stay in and be read to and is taking the night off from critter chasing too. I ordered some books for him awhile back and we've made it about half way through "My Side of the Mountain". For those of you who have kids or grandkids it is an excellent book full of adventure about a boy who leaves home from a New York apartment with 8 siblings to live off the land in the Catskills. I read this book a long time ago and loved it but must say even I'm learning things about nature and edible plants I never knew. This inquisitive kid is loving it and his little brother has enjoyed it when he is here.

In all seriousness though when it comes to that old cross bred red dog. A man could hunt a lifetime and go though a thousand dogs and never witness a dog that is a better track dog or has the drive that he has. It doesn’t matter what the weather or conditions are like or what he is running he makes every track he runs look extremely easy. When he trees cock the gun because he is going to have something. He doesn’t make many dens or slicks I’d say you can count both that he makes in a year on your fingers and that’s saying something considering that he makes multiple trees a day/night almost 7 days a week year round. He’s the definition of meat dog. The kind that in the depression era would have been worth his weight in gold. He’s been hit by a semi and at least 2 other regular cars that I know of he’s 145 years old and crippled up but on his worst day he’s in the top 5 of the best track dogs I’ve ever seen. I truly believe if he would have landed at our house as a 1 year old instead of a grey in the face dog he would have been better than anything we’ve got, that’s just the way it is. Shack and the rest are pretty decent dogs by anyone’s standards but Red just has something a little extra. Don’t ask me what that something is because I can’t exactly put my finger on it but the few that have seen it in a dog will know what I’m talking about. As it is though he has earned his place and has been one of the most profitable dogs in the country with his pup starting ability. The funny thing is he’s also a really good reproducer in his own right. An accidental breeding to a mojo female created a litter of red English looking dogs that were all squirrel treeing machines.

Old Red and Nana

Two of the very best things that Kash could have in his life. I was fortunate to have had a grandmother that loved me like a son, I spent as much time as I could with her growing up and never regret one minute of the time I spent with her. She was a second mother to me and I am sure Kash feels the same way about his Nana. A child can never get to much love and there is nothing greater than the love of a mother or Nana. I know that GOD has a special place for all of the loving mothers and Nanas of the world. Sadly, not all children are blessed with loving homes and loving families, but Thank GOD for those that do. I have gotten so much happiness from reading this post, it brings a smile to my face just thinking about Jen, old red and Kash, that's about as good as it gets in my book. Dave

Dalton I think it is partly because he goes on pure hound instinct. No one has ever told him to do it faster or disciplined him for the off game he chooses. He is pure unlike most anything else out there never altered by human hands or shocker since he has been here. I would guess this would have ruined him completely. He may aim to please us if we tag along but most of all does it for his own pleasure for if he is accompanied it is by Lizzy or a pup. He goes hunting if and when he chooses and pursues what he chooses. I would suspect he is much like many of the companion / yard / hunting dogs of yesteryear.

Dave

I wish all were blessed like we were and are. It's not about the things you can buy but the little things or big things as I call them given through your time and love.
I grew up a few hundred yards from my grandparents across a little creek on their farm. I was blessed to see them nearly every day of my childhood. Dalton will attest to this but imo my grandpa was second to only Jesus as the greatest man to ever walk this earth! It seems like nearly every important life lesson I learned was by or watching them. When our children were young we sold our house in town and moved less than 1/2"a mile up the road from the farm and bought our house here in the woods. My children were blessed to be raised so near two sets of grandparents. My grandmother is still alive at nearly 93 years old and my mother too all within half a mile of each other. There are three generations of us here, well four counting Ashton and when the kids bring the grandbabies there are five.

Yes, it's a wonderful thing to grow up in a loving family, I lived near my dad's family that were very close bonded and my mother's family only lived 18 miles from town on a farm. We visited my mother's family every Sunday, where all her brothers and sisters would bring their children to visit, as they were very close bonded . It was great having 2 sides of the family that were closely bonded and enjoyed spending time together and loved each other dearly. Having grown up that way, I thought every family was like that, really thought that until my college days. Family has always been and still is the most important thing in my life, that's why I am so pleased to see folks like yourself that have that close knit bond with their family. I see so many broken homes these days and children being neglected that it breaks my heart. It's easy to see why we have so much crime, drug use and other problems with so many young folks, they have not had a structured home life. Thank GOD for the families that stay together and raise their children with love and structure in their lives, preparing them to live meaningful and beneficial lives, which is priceless. Dave

I had an old Redbone once that could/would tree a coon anytime that he wanted to. It didn't matter where you dropped him, when he got ready he would saunter off and tree a coon. His only problem was he treed them when he wanted to and not when you wanted him to. He didn't please you, he pleased himself. His name was Mongo Red. He was hit by 2 cars, had a heat stroke and Lymes but he would still go and tree coons even when older.
