Dog jocky

James Baskin does not belong in your typical dog jockey group, James handles a better class of dogs. Dog jockeys in my opinion just handle anything they can make a dollar on, you don't get value from most dog jockeys. Being called a dog jockey is not very flattering in these parts. Lol. Dave

Clayton McDowell or Leroy King

Tried several dogs Ole Clayton had, only 1would tree as he swore he was a "treedog" ,problem was the darn thing would tree on every tree in the woods, including the power pole along the road.
Leroy was a kind feller,he would drive way over in Indiana and get a dog off of his father on credit and maybe take it clear to Kentucky to sell it for a couple hundred..

Back in the 60's we had an old fellow that sold dogs up here in northern MN. Johnson was his name. I an a buddie went to his place one day to see what he had, He had about 10 or 12 dogs tied to dog houses. We said we were looking for a coon hound that would tree. the first dog in the line was a smaller black dog told us he was a straight dog no thrash and a good tree dog.
said he was about 3 or 4 years old. Completely gray faced and closer to 10. As we went down the line Told us any one would satisfy us .Take our pick $25. AS we were looking at the dogs another buyer showed up and asked if he had a dog that would run fox. Johnson started again at the first dog and told him that the dog was a top fox dog and ran nothing but fox. He looked at us and winked, think he thought we might ruin his sale. LOL!

He used to trade dogs with a fellow from Iowa that picked up dogs at the dog sales down there. Never seen him have a full hound. He sold a friend of mine a pair of small Blueticks. I hunted with him once, but didn't take a dog. They did tree a coon but were mean. I looked at them and started laughing, they actually were Blue Healers. When we got home (we had and old car and carried the dogs in the back seat)he reached in to take them out and got bit. Dogs GONE! Those were the days.

Billy Wright

Just remembered Billy.I bet some people in Iowa remember him.He was probably at least 60 when I meant him.I really think he loved his dogs but I would say at least90% of then were junk.He usually had 50-60 dogs tied up everywhere,in old car bodies, old refrigerators etc.To this day I remember one, either Irish or Russian wolf hound. He was on about a 30 foot chain and you couldn't get close to him.MEAN!

Actually, I have never met him or bought a dog from him, I was going by his prices and the fact he has no problem selling them on the Prohound site. Either his dogs are above average or there are some mighty dumbs folks buying them. Lol. Dave

folks take people's word for the type of dog they're selling. To my knowledge the only dog he's sold worth anything is Eli stone. And he needed a bunch of work when he was bought. I know quite a few guys that bought 1 from him. None were as described except Eli. And most all of them he's never seen go. Just like most dog jockeys.

Therein lies the problem, for what he sells most of his dogs for, it would take an idiot to take his or anyone else's word for what the dog is. I just can't imagine all those dogs he sells being worthless and people still buying every one he lists for sale. Maybe it's just me that does not think that many people would buy from him if all those dogs were duds. Word travels fast in the hunting community about a man's reputation, how does he sell that many dogs if what you say is in fact true? Are there really that many stupid hunters hunting in PKC? Dave

Your post says it all, folks have different opinions about most things including dogs. What suits one may not suit another, I have always said that if both the seller and buyer were happy with the deal, that's the only thing that mattered. I haved been both happy and sad as a buyer, but never blamed anyone but myself if I was not satisfied with what I bought. Dave

I haven't hunted with 1 before I bought it in a few years. I ask around if its worth what is being asked. And if I like what I hear I'll buy it. I'm not saying I haven't bought anything off this board or the old board before but its been a few years.

honestly what I'm looking for doesn't come up for sale very often. But I'm still looking and will probably continue to look for a long time. But most guys that buy dogs off of this board or the other aren't looking for a top contender. Just 1 in the price range they can afford that might fit the bill. I know of 4 or 5 that baskins has sold to different guys. All the same results but the 1.

When looking for a great dog to buy will more than likely cost you lots of money...because great dogs usually aren’t for sale...

The best option in my opinion is to out and buy two or three top blooded eight week old pups...this way your chances of getting what you want are as good as anyone else’s...

I share the same feeling about buying off any board or any dog advertised for sale, they just aren't going to be a top dog, decent maybe but not topnotch. A top notch dog sells itself if it can even be bought. Someone local knows the dog and is waiting to buy if it becomes available to buy. Guess my lack of buying advertised dogs has kept me safe from the dog jockeys of the hunting world. Lol. Dave

Not all "dog jockeys" should be seen in a negative light. Not that long ago MANY houndsmen were constantly buying, selling and trading, some still are. Bartering was a way of life whether dogs, horses and just about anything else. It doesn't make them all dishonest people.
Here is an honest question how many feel that a huge percentage of our dogs way back pedigrees are actually correct?
