The absolute best coon treeing dog in the world will not necessarily win a world championship. It not only has to be great it has to be great inside the rules set for that KC. It has to be great during that week and its handler has to make all the right calls with none to very few mistakes. You can have a dog that will put more meat on the table than any other dog on the planet and still not get it done because of some strange quirk the dog has or because he went left handed when the winning coon was right handed. Your coon made it in a den and the other dogs didn't ect....

Greatness can be completely over shadowed by luck or the lack of it. The UKC world hunt this year will have 99% of the dogs sent home with a owner thinking they still had the best dog there they just didn't get the break they needed. Some are right and some are not.

Each person sees things in a dog that they see as greatness, that same thing can be seen by someone else as mediocre or even a fault. There are dogs that have won the world hunt and thousands of dollars that I wouldn't feed. The same fault that makes me hate them is part of what made them win.

My thoughts exactly, some of the winning digs have faults that I can not stand as a pleasure Hunter or competition Hunter. Dave

I look at this a little different than most and I’m sure a lot of you guys will Disagree with me but I’m going to give my opinion on it anyway. I don’t think it takes a great dog to win a world hunt. Most dogs that do win aren’t Freaks of Nature. You need three things to win The most important in my opinion is a handler that makes absolutely No mistakes. You can have the greatest dog in the world but a minus at a high level is magnified by 1000. The second is a dog that can tree a coon and stays out of trouble. Nothing flashy or fancy just consistent. The Third is a whole lot of luck Because without it you can’t win anything. To win a world hunt you have to catch a break.

Best dog and handler can't tree coons where they are not moving or where there are not any that's why the $$$ formats where you can buy back in are appealing to me jmo.

I tend to agree, it takes all 3 things as you indicated. A great dog can overcome a handlers mistake, if he doesn't make to many. It definitely takes some luck getting good spots to hunt, a dead cast can ruin a man's chance to win it all. Dave

Folks will breed to these dogs based on titles alone...and then they will wonder why there are so many culls in the litter...

x2. i have a young male that will most always locate and chop maybe one time then check the tree if the coon moved on that's good he'll go on but if the coon is in the first tree a dog that trees quick will get first tree so as a comp dog to some not to good but good for a pleasure hunter good because he hardly ever misses.
