According to what I read, plenty dogs operate better on pills. But is that what we're striving for? Have we gotten to the point where we just want to win regardless of how we win?

We want to win with a good dog. We want our dogs operating at their maximum potential. In some dogs it seems that they reach their maximum potential with a thyroid level in the higher range of "normal". If your dog is anemic would you give it a B-12 shot? If your dog has arthritis or joint stffness would you give it an NSAID? If your dog had allergies would you give it Benedril or Claritin? If your dog was run down would you give it a supplement? If your dog had worms would you give it a wormer? Just where do you "draw the line" at what you would or would not give your dog?

If my dog was so anemic or had worms so bad that he had to treated every day he wouldn't be here very long. But it's nice to know that there would be people willing to buy him.

Barry Bonds was taking steroids to raise his levels above the normal range wasn't he? Surely most hunters would "draw the line" at giving their dog something to raise its blood levels "above normal" to give their dog an advantage. This usually has harmful side effects in the long run. But giving a dog medication to raise its blood level to the higher limits of normal is probably "over the line" to some but just "up to the line" to others. And is there a difference between giving meds to a dog with a level of 1 and giving meds to a dog with a level of 2.4?

Richard, if you have a dog with thyroid problems and is on the pill that's OK. I just don't think these dogs should be used in breeding programs. We have dogs that perform very well without pills. Why would you want to bring another defect into dogs that have enough already?

I understand that. What I am trying to learn about is dogs that are in the lower range of "normal". Do they have a thyroid "problem"? Should they be given meds?
If you have a dog that already has a low thyroid, will it test positive for an autoimmune response even if the low thyroid level was caused by something else and is not hereditary? Or do you have to test a dog before it has a low thyroid level? Can the autoimmune level test differentiate between a hereditary cause and low thyroid level caused by other factors?

Read up on Olympic atheletes and thyriod levels. Dr's are not in agreement on what a high performance athlete's levels should be compared to what is considered normal for the rest of the human population.

Take this for what its worth. 10 years ago i had thyroid cancer. Had thyroid removed along with 14 lymph nodes. Been cancer free since. I take 250 mg of synthroid. Get checked once a year, t4s 3s antibodies. Endo wants all levels at least mid range.
Had a lipper female with thyroid problems. In her prime you could drpp her anywhere and she would tree you coons in style. One night had her start a track start to locate then go quiet. Found her under the tree with a coon but curled up resting. Thyroid level was low. Put her on meds problem was solved.i would rather have levels at least mid range for both man and dog if you could find two vets or drs to agree on what is NORMAL.

the lab work from hemopet would cost you 102$ for a thyroid t5 . i have got 3 estimates from local vets for charges to preform the services required . they range from 42 $ to 68 $ . add 30$ for fedEx shipping . for less than 200$ you could know if bildo was genetically predisposed to have to be medicated the rest of his life . if it was genetic you could share that information to other hound owners who have hounds with the same bloodlines on the top and bottom of bidos pedigree so they could add a t5 test to their hounds vet checks to better guard for health issues . just out of curiosity what breed is bildo? how many vet visits did you have to make to the vet before bido was diagnosed correctly ? how many times did you have to test his t4 levels to get him back to normal levels ? m.s.u . will do the t5 f.o.a. test for 68 $ . vets are more familiar with F. O. A.

I tend to agree with RM our water system may be a big part of the problem A lot of well water is like mine has a High ph Alkaline level compared to city water safe to drink just different than what most people are used too. My great uncle had 2 wells on his place one was sulpher water, safe level to drink just smelled bad he used it to water animals and garden the other well went to the house. Just some food for thought.

They're thyroid pills, not anabolic steroids! I take a thyroid pill every day of my life, and I don't feel any stronger, but I do function the way I'm supposed to, according to my Dr. I have to believe the same goes for our dogs as well. It's not a super pill, it's medication.

I've taken some of my synthroid extra doses to see if it had any effect for a week and i couldnt tell the difference. So i took half my reg dosage for a week and that did effect me. Tired, kinda of foggy thinking and then momma said quit experimenting and do what the dr told you. Lol

Haha! No, but I quit taking them for awhile, and almost got fired from job, because no one could stand to be around me. Grouchy and wore out. After that, I kind of figured, my doctor was a wee bit smarter than me, and I never miss taking them, but only once a day!
