I used to run beagles, and enjoyed dogs in general. My Step Grandpa started hunting a mixed black and tan female he got out of KY. She was a deer running, opposum treeing machine. But occasionally she'd run a coon, and do it as good as any dog I've seen. I kind of got hooked, bought my first dog, and those dogs taught me about coonhunting.

My cousin was given a papered bluetick puppy and a friend let him borrow an older blue female pup trainer. First time I ever went with him the old girl put on a clinic and ran up a 28 pound boar. 3 22’s to the head later that monster of a coon came out of the mighty oak he was perched in and thudded on the frozen creek bank. That crisp, clear, December night set the standard high for how this addiction was supposed to work. My cousin lost interest, the old girl died a few nights later, but I’m still hooked. Still get the butterflies thinking about that night, and I have yet to see a coon that big in these parts since.
