Thin coon???? Coons that are skinny from lack of groceries......we have a lot of that down here. I think that populations are directly related to how much feed there is for them. Thank goodness for all the deer hunters with their deer slinging corn almost year round.
Adios,
Gary

Sometimes a dog can make a hunting area look better or worse depending on the dog.

We have a thin coon population here but I have a spot where I can tree 5 singles and be home in 90 min and never walk over 500 yards the whole night

Have hunted over 1500 acres the past two weeks and have not treed one. Snows on here and haven’t seen a track either. Usually tree one a night. Or every other night. Idk if I’m hunting the area too hard or what

Expand your hunting areas. When the weather is cold like it was last week, your dog is going to her to cover a lot of ground to tree one. Take last night for example for mine, the dogs went opposite directions and picked both up over 2 miles from where I cut loose. I figured the coons would be stirring good because we had a break from the cold. They probably did but early this morning.

I drive 170 miles a night to pleasure hunt (85 miles one way). I live in Fort Worth Texas and drive to Jacksboro Texas 3 nights a week.

It seems like most nights on average dogs have to go 1/4 to 1/2 mile to strike and tree a coon.

I don't think we have a lot of coons but not sure why. I am the only coon hunter in the area. It could be a lack of dog power.
