I start hunting mine alone after they have treed 3x. It doesn't matter if they treed the coon or not, once they know what a tree is they hunt alone. I've hunted some alone before they ever made a tree.

The reason many won't hunt alone is guys think they are going to know the back of the woods out when they've never been turned alone. MOST WILL NOT! The first few times alone I ALWAYS take them someplace they've hunted before and know well.

When breaking one to hunt I won't whip one for not going, patience is key. If you go to working on one for not hunting every time you take them alone guess what the dogs thinks.... When he gets turned alone he's going to get a whipping. First they have to learn to hunt alone and build confidence, after that you can teach them what git really means. Before shocking collars I used a sling shot, now days I use vibrate to teach one to git moving. The young one I hunting now would hunt about 250-300yds at the start of last coon season, now he'll go 3/4mi before he even thinks about swinging back towards me and he won't check in he just finds new ground to hunt.

Every year I will get a pup or two to start, one of the biggest problems I see is dogs not wanting to hunt by themselves. The ones that have it usually have it from day one. The pup that is content to lay in the yard usually doesn't want to hunt. The one that starts dragging stuff in the yard that you don't know where it came from that's the one I want. I generally start pups by themselves or only hunt them sparingly with another dog.

I think it's more of who is snapping the leash on and off. I've noticed the biggest change in the people calling themselves coonhunters. They get a dog it trees and it's a boneafide coondog!! And they are a coonhunter. Couple local hunts later and all comp hunters are cheaters cause their "coondog" cannot win. So they quit and so on and so on

I agree I have an 8 month old right now that will tree a hot coon and do not right but he is no where near coondog status nor ready fir the hunts I think to many people want the glory withought the work I'd rather take my time now not two years but take my time and let my pup do his thing I like them to start right but I'd rather it happen as it happens I believe I may be wrong but I'll be better and the pup will be better in the end remember coondogs are born not made if it is in them it will come our we just fine tune

Yep, I agree. The right trainer will always get the best out of a dog. About three years ago there was a guy on here that replied to every training question as if he was the no. 1 premier dog trainer alive. After about a year of this it was figured out that he was about 30 years old. Not that anyone 30 cant train dogs, but this cat knew it all.
Then one day he posted about not being able to get his dogs to stop running deer, seems he had tried everything!!! Somebody posted reminding him how he was telling everyone else how to do it last week, he hasn't been heard from since. Somebody nicknamed him the "coondog whisperer", but I seriously cant even remember his username.

I am not a breeder but will breed my own dogs so I can up my chances of picking the right pups...I test my pups for natural winding, tracking and finding...at around 4 months I take them to the woods and watch which will hit the ground running and making a loop...and see which pups will run with the leader...I hope to not have to coax them to do any of this because I am looking for natural abilities or tendencies...we can feed a reasonable amount of tracks or whatever...and that is ok...but when breeding better dogs we must breed to the naturals that go on to prove themselves...

Something I will do is to make sure they come out of the box fresh and ready to do something and turn the pups out in open woods so I can see what they do...

A grown dog that needs coaxing can be taken to the woods and just turn them out and send the dog to hunt...if no hunt wait him out and see if he gets bored and hopefully he will roll out...at that time we can move as needed...

If turning a pup out after the lead dog the pup could become a follower or somewhat of a me too dog...turn the pup loose first and he will not leave until the the lead dog is turned out...I have made that mistake before...take the pup by itself until it rolls on its own...there are a few things we can do to help...
