And if nothin happens after the 10th night just leave him tied to the bumper as you drive away.

It sounds like you have pretty good hound he's just who he is and not much is going to change him . time will tell in all of this , if you like the dog feed him and hunt him , where I hunt they usually don't have to go far to fine a track. But they might have to go far to tree the coon ! if you are hunting in open woods and not a lot of cover there is no reason a hound shouldn't hunt out . Hunting on feeders is a terrible way to train a dog to hunt . iv always tried to start mine very young in the woods letting them run and what ever they struck as a pup and most of the time iv had good success getting one started that way. once a hound figures out what's fun he should desire to continue to play the game , jmop

last night's report

Well, I pulled out in the middle of a really big bean field that hasn't been planted yet and cut him loose at least 400 yards from the nearest woods. After about 10 minutes of circling around in the field 150 - 200 yards from the truck he put his head in the air and went 550 yards across the field, crossed the river and hit a track. He worked the track about a hundred yards, came back across the river and tree'd on a big den. So he does know that he can go farther, tonight he should get there a little quicker.

Dry holed him last night, place has been hunted to death and dropped him almost a half mile from the woods to start with. He left like he should have and hit a track around 7 tenths of a mile out. He put it in a hole and kept going, He finally got tree'd at .86 in a tool shed with a coon on a corner post. A few more nights of that and he may be fine, or I may create a monster, lol.

Glad you're having success with him hunting. The other method that I've explored is teaching the dog to push forward with the e-collar.

This usually works. Stay with it. He's gotten away with not going. Might take more than 10 nights.hunt those easy coon spots for 3 or4 nights. Leave him in the box. The closet the other dog trees the better.jealousy is the best trying tool there is. Hunting him in thin coon won't help. You've already said if he doesn't hit a coon close he doesn't go.

Cutting him across a lot of open ground seems to be helping cut the cord, so to speak. Once he figured out that he may have to go more than a couple hundred yards to strike a coon and that I wasn't going to walk him in any further he decided to go on his own. At least so far, but that has only been done 2 nights too. We'll see how tonight goes.

Well, the jury is still out on him after Sat night. Put him in a hunt and still pretty much saw the same dog that I've been hunting, he spent 40 minutes beating a briar infested hillside to death after we pulled him off a den tree and wound up making another den tree when he should have just moved on to start with. Nothing else in the cast tree'd a coon so, maybe he did the best he could in his mind, but if the hunting is that hard there he should have gone on and left it.

I've been hunting one that likes to spend too much time monkeying around the 1 to 200 yard deal too, but the last couple times out she's getting better. She's 19 mo old I think. Absolutely got in where she needed to be last night (need to get out 5-8oo in my woods) and struck, run some track, then threw the most beautifull locate, then hammered the tree till I got there. Gave her a quick pat and tied her up and looked and looked and finally after squalling and the whole 9 yards and found a dang porky...ugh...didnt do much but get her outa there and went to my honey hole road to find another which we did and she was pretty jacked up on it and I lit her up then went up the road a little farther and bumped her some more. Hurt her feelings pretty bad. Now im worried I didnt mess her up too bad. We'll see...sorry for the hijack...just needed to say something
