What I don’t understand is why guys think breeding bird dog into them would give them a better chance at finding a coon? Hounds have better noses than bird dogs. It doesn’t take much of a nose to smell something 50 yards down wind of it. I could see it putting more hunt in them but that’s something most don’t need help with.

years ago most coonhunters walked behind the dogs .by adding a bird dog to the hounds they were hoping to get a dog that covered the woods better and not blowing out of the country .it was tweaking the hunt style they were seeking .if anything they lost some nose but got more of a drifting winding type track dog that looked for tracks when released not racing off a mile before striking .

Joey, A hounds nose can come nowhere close to a Bird dogs nose, I have seen average Bird dog in a dead run lock up and catch scent of a little 6 oz feathered Quail 25 yards away and i have seen real good hounds run right over top of a 12 lb fur covered Coon and never know it is there, A yard Mole will put out more scent than a Pheasant and anyone that has ever hunted Bird dogs and watched them bust a covey and watch them go back 10 yards over and pick up a single bird and no it was there is something to see, No one could ever convince me a Hound has a better nose although the right blend of both is something to see as well .

I guess I opened up a can of worms. Lol

Yes your right they were all 3 the same breed. I've been to bird dog field trails and those are some of the most athletic dogs I've ever saw. Sutmiller had one dog that won the wld hunt 5 times. He was either half or quarter bird dog. He said people were stunned at the ground he would cover. He said he had to break a lot of those dogs off coons in the day time. It's not just any bird dog cross. I pleasure hunted with bird dogs but them pointers they used in the field trails were flat something to watch.

The whole nose thing is debatable. A dog running 25 mph and stop on a dime and pinpoint a bird 20 yards away fast is some real winding ability. I've had a few people tell me that they have crossed bird dog on hounds and got real game getters that never would tire out.

If you don't believe bird dog was crossed on hounds you might be right. I raised a litter of pups off dot and awesome 2 years ago. A few of those pups had pink noses. Dot also does a lot of edge running and ambushes a lot of coon. Bird dogs that hunt big run the edges. I've seen several big named walkers do the same thing. I also had a line of walkers that often had flag tails.

My female that I recently lost and every pup out of her that I'm still in contact with their owner strikes coon out of the box at 70 mph . And no they don't bark their head off going down the road . If they bark cut them you're on a coon track. They all do this naturally without training. The big nose is still there if you know where to look. Our most recent world champ treed two behind the other dogs 75 and 200 yards from the cast . hint, hint

I'm not gonna help the x-bred category until they change the name to Bluebones or Watered down walkers.
