Yes a mean dog and a gritty dog are two completely different things all together. A dog being timid or shy does not mean it will not be suicidal gritty. The same can be said for mean and gritty. The genes are not directly linked like folks relate them.

We all are guilty for making excuses for dogs. Some more than others.

ive seen alot of the same in hounds as chevrolet .i dont like shy acting dogs,but have seen some good ones with backbone on game.its like they have a little switch in their brain that overides when its time to hunt.since this post is about bear training .this is one of the experiences i had training with a friend .he got this male hound who was nothing less than mean ,it started picking fights with the other hounds alot making us staple dogs.it also killed a couple of porcupines which is no easy task resulting in thousands of quills with big vet bills.i pleaded with my buddy to cull the dog,but he would not cause he is gritty he kept saying.well we started training ,and had a bear bayed up which the dogs were mixing it up pretty good with on the ground .he wanted to send mr.gritty in so i radioed back to send him ,and a pup in well when mr. gritty got there you never seen a dog put the brakes on so fast when he saw what the other hounds were fighting.his tail went between his legs ,and he couldnt get out of their fast enough .i have seen shy dogs be gritty,and mean dogs be cowards.i have also seen mean dogs be gritty,and shy dogs be cowards.it is important to give a hound a chance to turn out ,but knowing when to move on is more important in having good bearhounds.

There are exceptions in every thing I guess, I was mainly talking about pups.

And personally and from my experiences a very gritty acting pup on game hunted can turn mean easily, alot of stuff happens at a tree, and in the pack.

Most bear hunters prefer dogs to tree off the tree, I am one of those people, but here lately my dogs are getting much more tree in them, and are not going to tolerate a jacker or a lot of ruffing around. Mainly its all boils down to pack rules which is different in different packs. Most of these problems I have mentioned above is male realated. I generally don't hunt more than 2 males together, sometimes only one. I perfer females, and the ones I have are gritty as any male of any breed in most cases.

I have had dogs that get attitudes toward certain dogs because of something that has happened or whatever, and cant hunt the two together. They can be hunted with anything else and no problems, but together bad, no matter the circumstances. Maybe everything I got is mean to some, but I don't have many problems, but there is a fine line in my opinion, never had a dog kill another dog, but I know it happens from time to time in packs.

As far as shy dogs, again was talking about pups. Heck before the garmins my breeding was aimed alittle in that direction.

Bottom line is you can waste a lot of money trainning a dog, sometimes its much easier and cheaper to just drop a couple grand and get one already doing it.



chevrolet, I would like to come down and do a hunt with you sometime, or you can come here, we aren't that far. I am not sure I have your number thou.
