Mark, I had to "train" them. I must be a pretty good "trainer".

It brings out their "natural ability". If they will tree Ted, then they will tree anything.

Had a walker dog one time in my teens he was a natural tree dog Richard I didn't have to put a thing in the tree just slap on the side of a tree and he would let loose on it what a natural tree dog he was he was a heck of a summer time dog I didn't like him much in the fall/winter months though do you reckon it was because I trained him to tree in the summer ?

Had a Redbone like that one time. When he got a slight drift of scent anywhere he would hook up to the closest tree and pound away. Had Richard train that pup for me and he really brought out all his natural treeing abilities. He was a very nice tree dog. But that's about it. Wonder what happened to him?

Oh yeah, I remember now.

Allen, I remember him. His name was Banjo wasn't it? You hunted him at SRD's one year and I had Lil Zack. Banjo made three trees but Lil Zack never made a tree. We never saw a coon but I swore that I would get me one of those Banjo's. And now, all of these years later I have a laundry room just full of them. But then they are little Lil Zack's also.
Mark, I had a little walker pup like that one also. He was just full of "natural treeing ability". I have pictures of him treeing a rag hung on a fence post in front of my house at 3 mos old. He was out of Gr Nt Ch Hammering Earl and would tree birds in the front yard at 3 mos old. After he got to be a little older, he would also run a deer from dark to daylight and cover several counties doing it. You see, he was a "natural track dog" also. It was bred into him. His daddy was the same way as a pup. After a little "training" he went on to become one of the best and winningest dogs that I have ever owned.

Did he go out back behind the barn and go on to become a stud dog ?

Richard, yes, you hunted with the daddy of that treeing machine, but it was not Banjo. So as to not tarnish that dog's (sire) name we'll leave it at that. I would also not want to humiliate the sire owner. Wait??... that's me, so it's ok.

Bond, the last time I saw him, was out behind the barn, yes. And no, he is not being used for any breeding purposes.

Richard is that your answer ?
All I got out of that is if you got a pup trained treeing by sight on rags and birds that will run trash for miles if you get a good dog trainer he can make a winner out of a cull 👍

Here is another one that had to be trained. I "started" her on Ted and then sent her up to P Mike to further her training. She is one of the pups in the picture above. He laid some drags and showed her a few caged coons during the day and then took her hunting. It is a shame that she wasn't a natural and had to be shown those coons and needed a pup trainer. This was taken at 3 mos old.

Here she is at 8 mos old. She has left the pup trainer behind. See, even I can train one of these culls. That is, after someone else (P Mike) gets them going. She is 11 mos old now. I am thinking about taking her to a hunt this next weekend. Those caged coons and drags are sometimes just the thing to get them going when they need a little help to ignite that spark that is bred into them.

I don't know, call me old fashion, but I'd have a hard time telling my wife, "Honey , me and the boys are going out to hunt Ted tonight".

or

For Sale: 5 month old Redbone male puppy, started on Ted.

Better hope PITA doesn't find you doing this to poor Ted!

Doc, I Ted hunt in the daytime and don't get out of my front yard. My wife watches and thinks that it is funny. I don't know what I will do if PITA gets Bear hunting outlawed in Tennessee.

Some training required

I've yet to see the "natural" born with all the qualities I desire in a Coondog.
If some training is required to get a pretty good dog, I'll live with that.

I've never had a natural I had to train to find track and stay treed but All I've had to give correction too big differents imo

I myself have had quite a few that I have had to put feeders out so that they could find a track and then had to "help" them to stay treed. One man's "give correction to" and another man's "training" might just be the same thing. But then again, there might be a difference. I guess that is just depends on who you are talking to. Oh yeah, and one that I had to "train to stay treed" went on to become one of the best that I have owned. He was super quick to get treed but then he wanted to leave and run backwards away from the tree. After a little electricity, he "learned" to stay treed. I guess that he wasn't a "natural" but he sure was a fast learner.
I sure hope that everyone doesn't start getting these "all natural" pups. No one will need to be a "trainer". All you would need are truck drivers and dog fetchers. It would be a shame if there were no more trainers around.
