Well folks, we've had an interesting turn of events this past weekend.... Fatty was hunted two nights in local UKC hunts in pursuit of the elusive GrNtCh title but she really just didnt seem herself and we lost... I loaded her up to take her last night for some good alone time before her string of hunts come up only to find ahe had just started her heat cycle.

It all made sense then! Lol. Now we're posed with a couple questions.... Breed her again with only 2 wins shy of GrNtCh or not and if so, who do we breed her to? The two at the top of the list are Timber Valley Triple X and Red Ruby Hardtime Crow...

If we dont breed her we rock on with our plans to hunt her in these hunts and try finish her to Grand amd place at a couple larger hunts

Folks, this is a hard choice and each cross makes sense for.different reason in my mind... whats yalls opinion? HELP

decision made

After thinking it over and doing some hard pedigree research, we've decided to breed Fatty this heat cycle. She should still be able to compete in the hunts we have planned for her in March and it not affect the pups.

Between Jason, Zac, and myself we did some deep hard pedigree research and Timber Valley Triple X is the stud we are going with this time. It was a tough choice between him and Seth Isch's Crow dog but the with the fact that X is 11 years old we felt that if we were going to make this cross we'd better do it before something happens to him.

we're booking 6 pups and would love to get them in competition hunters hands. They will be double Huck a Buck and Timber Valley Lucky bred. I believe this cross will produce the type of hound we enjoy hunting and competing with.

pups will be $300 with a $50 deposit. If you're interested in booking a pup, please send me a PM or give us a call. Thanks!

A lot of great hounds behind your female and the cross your fixing to make. I think your female looks a lot like the old Timber Valley Queen female.

Here is a link to a video of a lot of the hounds in your pedigree. A little history is that the Durango and Lucky cross was the first all grand English cross ever made.

Okie

Thanks for sharing the video... Lots of great info there!

I'm always curious to see and hear the dogs that have blazed the trail in out breed. Especially those that have influenced the dogs that I have snapped a lead on.

This made my day!

Hey Chris...

Chris,
You've got some face to face experience with X. What are you expecting out of these pups?

I appreciate you getting in on this litter. Glad to see some guys that I know will push these pups in some hunts!

This is very educational for me as well. It give me a whole new perspective of this line of hounds and takes away from the statistical point of view and give it a personal feel. John really loved Lucky seemed like and Im proud to get the opportunity to hunt pups off of dogs he and Larry Wilcox created.

Out of this cross I would expect some really smart pups that should be very Independent, Naturally Straight, Early Starting, and Accurate. I helped with getting Tony Williams and Nick Williams together on the original purchase that got Triple X to Alabama. Prior to Nick selling X to current owner Lamar Turner, I had the opportunity to hunt with X a good bit. Triple X was a coondog that would tree them close or take you for a hike if he had too, very independent and accurate.

- The guys that deserve a lot of credit -

John Ferrari, Larry Wilcox, and Jim Ridge have done a lot of great things for our English breed and this line specifically.

UPDATE!

All pups are booked at this time for first dibs on the first 6 from the X x Fatty cross! I'm confident We should have more than six pups but we just don't feel comfortable booking more than that at this time. With that being said, if you are interested in the litter, please don't hesitate to call us and we will jot your name and number down on the call list. To the folks that booked a pup from us, thank you very much! We're looking forward to getting these pups in such good hands!

Fatty will be taken to Lamar Turner's house Thursday the 18th to start breeding to X! Im excited!

Thanks for the video Jason! That was a fun hunt even though we got soaking wet from the rain and you almost got bogged down in the field! lol!

Not much has changed here for the past couple of days... Zac will be loading up Fatty here in a couple of days to take her to Mr. Lamar.

on Thursday the 25th, Zac and myself will be going back through to Mr. Lamar's to pick fatty up and then head up to Chris Dillard's to pick up mine and Jason's Pride pup, "Ugly".

Me and Jason are getting together tomorrow afternoon as well to construct some feeder buckets. Jason lives in prime coon hunting but alot of his branches and turn outs are small (600-800 yards long). We're going to take advantage of that and try to bring in the coons to those branches for pup training. He says in past experiences that it has worked real well for him.

Since we're breeding Fatty this heat cycle and if she takes, she wont be able to hunt at English days in June. I've already made arrangements at work to go, so if those of you getting pups up North dont mind helping us out with a little gas money, we don't mind hauling your pup up to Oblong, Illinois.

The plan is to go inspect a female from Fatty's first cross, a tri color gyp named Sadie. A man named John Sail who is a former competition hunter and local to us owns her and says she is the real deal. I hunted with Sadie when she was about 9 months old and watched her slam dunk a coon ahead of her mama. We were all kind of blown away that drop. lol.

If Sadie turns out to be what I think can win in Illinois, we will try and take her to hunt instead. From what I saw, that little strumpet had alot of the tools we were looking for. John also mentioned that Sadie split trees on the regular and is real good about having the meat.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more about Sadie

Our hunt with Sadie

Well, we finally had the opportunity to go hunt with John's Sadie pup via GrNtCh Main Street Slam x Fatty last night. She's a smaller, stocky built, tri color female that looks a lot like John Ferrari's old Blue Magic Gold female and has a unique mouth similar to her mother's but higher pitched.

We met up with John Sail, Justin "Bubba" Newsome, and Jerry Webb at Mr. Webb's farm just North of Metter, Ga in Twin City. Jerry was hunting a nice Walker male named Crockett and Bubba was hunting his Rinky Dink, a Walker male off of Slow Talking Blaze.

The first drop we cast them and all dogs struck quick (striking order was a calling contest), Crockett and Sadie loaded up treed only 150 yards or so in the branch as Dink trailed away from them. Sadie is a pretty nice tree dog. She chews a bit here and there, but on the whole she's pleasent to listen to. Anywho, we made it in to the first tree and found them on a Den. I searched the outside over pretty good with high hopes, but no coon was to been seen. Circle em up. About that time, Bubba said Dink was nearing a main highway around 600 yards away. We pulled around to cut him off only to find him treed on a fence in the woods.. Tough luck Dink. Minus points.

Drop two.... Sadie took a 2nd strike here and they DROVE a track down the Branch. About 600 yards later, Sadie came treed with a commanding locate.. I couldn't help my self as I said aloud, "Tree Sadie!". Everyone laughed as the other dogs piled in behind her... We walked to the tree to find them split. Sadie and Crockett were on one tree and Dink was behind them about 50 yards. Bubba handled Dink, us Sadie and Crockett. It Ended up that Dink had the coon and Sadie and Crockett were on a big ol slick oak tree. Minus Sadie and Crockett and Plus up ol Dink.

Drop three.. Again, Sadie took another 2nd and the dogs powerd down the branch 800 yards to get treed. Sadie took 2nd tree this time. We drove around to them to find them yet again split. Dink was several hundred yards away this time though. We Shined Sadie and Crockett's tree first. No luck was had until John pulled the magic vine on the tree that made the coon look. Plus em up. We pulled around to Dink's tree and had a moderately easy walk to another tree with a coon. Dink was on a roll and plus him up again.

That concluded our hunt. John said he felt real bad Sadie wasn't getting the hunting like she should be, and that lately she's only been getting 1 night a week of hunting for the past several months. We talked about getting her down here to be hunted and he said he'd stew on it. Sadie actually "belongs" to his son, so letting her leave the house for a few weeks to be hunted may not be such an easy thing to do as we originally thought.

I liked what I saw out of Sadie for the most part. She was pretty action packed from what I could tell. I'd really like to see her after several nights in a row of hunting alone.

Me too Chris! I'm ready to get ol Ugly back to South Easy Georgia! If all goes to plan, we should be there sometime in the early afternoon.

Here are a couple of updated pics of ugly that Chris sent me yesterday...I believe he is 5 weeks old...

In other news, Fatty was taken to Lamar's to be bred to X. Zac says they have locked up a few times and he's waiting on pictures to be sent.

We had a local Bluetick sectional this weekend that I guided for, judged, and hunted. I was hunting an ol blue female plug of mine and Randy Kurtz from South Dakota. I didnt have much luck but i guided a nice young English male out of two local pleasure hounds on Saturday night. He won 1st place registered with +350 and the two coon he trees were lay ups under a bright almost full moon. I was impressed.

I'm excited about him Chris! We're set up now with some nice hunting so when he gets old enough he'll have a good shot.

We picked Fatty up from Lamar's and now we play the 63 day waiting game!

Settling in...

It's been a couple days now and ol Ugly is settling in nicely. When I got him home, I brough him inside and tried to get him to play with my wife and I and all the little fella wanted to do was sleep lol. Twice that day I brought him in and he'd fall asleep in 10-15 minutes!

Today I got outside with him and was letting him roam around the back yard and dog pens some. His playfulness was starting to show more today as he got to get out and explore things some. I saw something though that really peaked my interest...

When I initially went to get him out of the pen, I carried a scoop full of puppy food down to fill his bowl incase he was out. I took him out, set him on the dirt, and sprayed the pen out then filled his bowl. It was then that I noticed he had went under the pen (about a foot or so off the ground) and had his head up in the air "winding" his food bowl. He circled back out from under the pen with his head down, smelled up side of the kennel and was lunging at his bowl. He never barked, but I don't believe it would have taken much for him to. After that I tried setting him up to try to get him to tree with no luck. He was distracted lol.

I thought it was pretty neat to see him naturally "smelling up" at 6 weeks old like that.. Hopefully thats a good sign

Dialing in

Starting on Monday night, we began dialing Fatty in for the state hunt. Monday and Tuesday night were her first nights out since she came in heat February 7th. The ol girl didn't do too bad considering the weather and being laid up for 3 weeks. She treed us a few coon, made a couple dens and a slick or two. Hopefully she got in a good cram session before the state hunt on Friday. We won't have her out again until then.

The last drop we made last night, Fatty went aproximatly .6 miles to get treed around the edge of a huge pond according to the Garmin. We drove as far close as we could to her which was about 350 yards and she was shelling the mail. We qucikly headed in to her tree and as we got close we noticed she was in the edge of the pond. When we shined the light on her, all hell broke loose... There was splashing, growling, howling, baying, and all other sorts of commotion going on! My first thought was 'this b*tch has gotten her self eaten by a gator' but the reality was she had bayed up a coon against an ol stump out on the edge of this pond! She'd grab him and sling him and the coon would come right back at her! At one point, the coon was on top her head almost as if he was intentionally covering her eyes lol! We were worried he would drown the ol girl so needless to say, we got wet. We got them seperated and we laughed all the way back to the truck. What a sight!

We struck WAY out this weekend at the Georgia state hunt. The first night, Fatty made the ONLY TREE we scored. Circle her. The hunting we were in was tough and there wasn't any good tracks to take. She went a good long way to get treed too. We were hunting in flat ponds with strands of hardwoods between massive fields of pine trees. Those aren't the best conditions to tree coon in.

Night number two was a tad bit different, Fatty had snakes in her head I believe lol. We still had a dead cast but if she hasn't been so far out of pocket on the last dump piddling around, she'd have won the cast.

It was not a pleasant hunt but the fellowship was well. Both nights we drew Roger Odom, former owner of Cutter who is Fatty's sire. He was hunting a big male off Top Gun and a Swamp Cat female named Crow. That dang Crow had some leg under him and would get GONE in a hurry. He ended up treeing the only coon we'd seen in two nights, but it wasn't enough after Crow took a hard lick treeing on a fence that he couldn't cross.

Roger, Rocky Tanner, and myself are working out a deal where I will be possibly be hunting a hound for them in the hunts some very soon. Its a littermate brother to Fatty that has never been in a UKC hunt but has won some $KC money when he was younger. They call him Steel and from the pictures I've seen, he looks to be an athleticly built, we'll put together, tri color hound. From what Roger told me last night, Steel and Crow hunt very similar meaning they get through the country. He said Steel was a bawl on track and bawl/chop on tree as we'll and Steel lives to get wooded.

Time will tell, but it will be nice to have something to hunt while Fatty is down with pups.

Moving forward!

I'll be tied up most every night of this week at work, so Zac will be doing most of the tuning on Fatty to try and get her ready for the Peach Classic. I'll be glad when I go back to day shift!

I spoke with Zac around midnight and him and a buddy of his went for a couple of drops. Fatty struck a track and took it to a public road where they caught her up. Zac said she was really moving that track well too before they picked her up. Drop 2 she blitzed in there a few hundred yards, slam dunked a tree, and had the grease. After that, they rode around the fella's property looking for another place to turn out with no luck so they headed home.

I hope we can get her dialed in enough to where we can finish her to Grand before these pups hit the dirt. We're asking a lot of her but I believe she can get the job done if we can just catch the right breaks.

I spoke with Roger Odom again today about hunting Steel and it looks like it's going to happen! All we're waiting on now is for now is a phone call from Roger telling us to come get him...

On another note, I'm working on another deal with Zaheed Hussain from Logansville, Ga. Z is a member of Woodstock Kennels and has offered me the opportunity to hunt his NiteCh Male, Chopper, at English days if I like....Chopper is off of NtCh Woodstock Gun and a Heavy Woodstock bred female. Woodstock Gun is directly off Grizzly himself. With the news that I got from Roger though, it looks like Chopper and Steel will be battling it out for the ticket to town .

As far as English days is concerned, I've got myself a place to stay and a Guide lined up for the whole week. A good buddy of mine, Zeb Myers, has taken us in several times for some good fun and fellowship. He knows what a coon dog is and is by the book honest. I'm glad to call him my friend.

Anyone else planning on making the trip to Oblong?

Unluckiest luck

I'm pinned up here at home since I have to work this weekend and apparently Im missing out on all the action!

Zac has taken Fatty up to the Peach Classic this weekend in Athens and has drawn two tough casts.

Last night, he drew a guy named JR Wall and another fella who was actually hunting a half brother to Fatty via Cutter. According to Zac, there was a dispute between the two other cast members about who struck whose dog, spectators shining the tree, the guide bowing up at Zac and JR AND the other handler making threats to Zac and JR... ALL ON THE FIRST DROP....

Needless to say, the other handler was scratched and written up for misconduct and the guide got in trouble as well. The remaining two hounds had an hour and 17 minutes to hunt alone and Fatty was down by 100+...

The next drop, she took a 1st and a 1st only to arrive and find both dogs bayed on a coon in a cage. Deleted points and moved on.

After the recast, several minutes passed and JR's bear dog got treed... He was alone and they ended up circling his tree as the hunt ended. About 45 seconds after the two hours was up, fatty rolled up treed deep and alone with what would have been the winning coon... Just our luck. lol.

Zac said she looked pretty sharp last night and she'll have to keep that pace if she wants to have a shot at the CW tonight. Zac's cast tonight consists of JR Wall again, Drake Chastain hunting Cody (Big River Dan pup and litter mate to Drake and Mark Looney's Trigger), and a Wipeout bred Walker male. JR won the cast last night with 250+ and won 1st place NiteCh and 3rd place overall... Drake won his cast last night as well and placed 5th overall.... Needless to say, I believe tonights cast will be action packed!!

As soon as Deadline ends and all scores are in, I'll let yall know what happens! Thanks for reading!

0-4

Another weekend where we strike out. Here's the info I got on Zac's cast tonight....

The first dump the three other dogs got treed, and Fatty blew in deep to get hooked alone. They used over an hour on the first dump recasting, scoring and walking to trees. One cast member withdraws.

The second dump, Fatty goes in takes a 2nd strike and slams treed. JR's dog covers her then leaves to tree fifty or so yards away while Drake's Cody dog trees another 50 yards away. We have a three way split. ALL trees minused and they Recast. Cody takes a minus and Bear gets split treed. Plus Bear up.

Drake and Cody withdraw. They recast Fatty and JR's Bear and they tree as the hunt expires... Circle..

Fatz ended up with -200 and Bear had -75

The breaks haven't been falling our way thus far, but we've still got a few weeks left to try and get these last two wins on Fatty before she should be heavy with pups!

Keep on Keepin' on

Well I've got a heap of information to dump on ya'll tonight.

I finally got things lined up with Roger Odom and Rocky Tanner on hunting their male dog, Steele. Steele is a littermate to our Fatty, so hunting him in some hunts and for pleasure will benefit us by allowing us to compare the two in the woods and see some other traits that Fatty may reproduce.

For the past few months, Steele has been living in the panhandle of Florida in Tallahasse with Charlie Kight. I was ignorant of who Mr. Kight was prior to my travel down South, but after our meeting I was glad I made the aquaintence. Charlie seemed to be a hard hunter who knew his English dogs. His small out building behind his home was lined from wall to wall with High Scoring English dog trophies from several different hunts. I was impressed at his collection of hardware. It's not easy winning on a national level consistently. Anywho, we talked for about 30 minutes or so and I shook his hand and started North for the 4 hour drive with my new pal Steele.

Steele is a well put together hound. He's about 75 pounds of muscle and has just enough leg under him. He has a broad head and a good ear on him too. I was excited to see how the ol boy would do.

I drove him home and took him out that night for a couple drops alone.

Steele leaves your feet like a rocket ship on rails EVERY time you cast him. He covers ground quick and hunts in a straight line with his head up. He has a good tenner bawl mouth and opens every 75 yards or so on track and is a bawl mouth tree dog with an explosive locate.

The first night we made 2 circle trees and called it a night, but last night we took him and Fatty out for a little one on one action...

It was an explosive night for us. We got started at about 12:30 and quit just before 3:00. Fatty and Steele treed three singles together and split treed at the end and both had circle trees.

Comparing the two was real fun, especially in a slam bam situation. Fatty had Steele on strike every dump by a few seconds and it litterally would have been a calling contest on who got treed first. They were Slammin' those trees HARD. I'll hunt Steele some more next week, but the plan for now is to focus on Fatty for a little longer.

Fatty as two hunts lined up this weekend. Zac will be hunting her locally on Friday night and I'll be handling her at an RQE on Saturday night with Zac riding shotgun. She's been looking pretty good and I hope that she'll be able to come up with a win this weekend. She's not showing signs of being bred yet, but she is acting a little funny around the house according to Zac.

We're still planning on going to Southern English days at the end of the month. I'm looking forward to gettting up there and meeting some new folks.

Some of you may be wondering about ol Ugly... Well, he's doing just fine and growing like a weed. I really like his demenor and am looking forward to starting him. He turns 9 weeks old tomorrow.

Thanks for reading!

Me and Fatty picked up a NtCh win and 2nd place NtCh at Southern English Days tonight! Fatz did her thing and had 2 1st and 1sts for a winning score of +450! I think we could have done better if it weren't for her being pregnant! We'll see if we can finish her to GrNtCh tomorrow night.. We'll get our picture taken in the Morning.
