Young and advancing

Dennis I know what you mean. A young dog really starting to put it together makes me go every night. One that has done all it is goin to do gets old. I still enjoy taking Sally cause I know she wants to go but I know what to expect. I like to see one progress. Some make top hounds but most just a mediocre hound. No matter how much u hunt it. The special ones don't come often. Everyone has different likes and needs in a dog. What I like in a dog most would kill. I just enjoy having one that doesn't pack and gets a coon treed quick.

The hound that gets treed quick & often is what I prefer. If they quit there track to cover, I get a little bent out of shape. I want a hound that trees the first coon they smell good enough to make it run or tree quick. Passing up coon just to get deep and alone isn't what I prefer. I would estimate the hounds I hunt are split 50 to 60 percent of the time in a competitive event. If they back on slick trees I normally won't keep them.

The problem I think with blue tickers is that everyone is stuck on there own and won't tell another man he has a good hound this breed has been the hardest think to get into majority won't tell you anything bad mouth everybody's else's **** and for the most part keep breeding the same ol **** to same ol **** expecting a different result or the 1 out of a 1000 dog paper to paper is how the breedi g is instead of coon dog to coon dog I am not saying even one but majority I think we as a group to need to pride ourself breeding g coon dog to to coon dog not papers but what do I know

MAY-BE UKC SHOULD KEEP A % ON BREEDERS , IF YOU HAVENT PRODUCED A HIGH ENOUGH % OF NITE CHAMPS
WITH-IN 100 PUPS YOU WOULD NO LONGER GET TO REGISTER PUPS = I WOULD VOTE FOR THIS , HOW ABOUT YOU.

Terry the only thing I would change is the allowing a 100 pups, say 50 max. 100 pups on the ground is way too many pups prior to knowing if they will reproduce to an expectable level. This would improve the breed as much as anything. Next thing it would be nice to be able to pull up this info. on a site to see how many pups a sire has and the percentage without paying or calling to get the info.. All we can do is wish as I feel it will never happen due to the money involved. Too many puppy mills and killing all the breeds, I personally hate the puppy mill mentality.

Makes no sense to me at all...hope yer joking.....so say yer dog(s),produce 1 in 10 pups as a nite champion....(1 in 10)......then you get to register yer pups and stud yer dog out and the next guy don't ?
10 percent in most anything in life isnt .very good.....

My dog might throw 70 percent good coon hounds that half were bought by hide hunters... but those pups cant be registered because they dont have a nt champ title......whaaaat.....?

I wud vote for Hillary before id vote for that....lol.

see both points

what if you got temp papers until 18 months than had to htx them right or bury them? No matter how they were bred.

Blueme,,,,,

Good point.....the thing is, I have purchased pups over the years outta some of the STUDS of the year at the time and got nothing but frustration and a hole in my pocket book, but we all know thats part of what you deal with in hounds. Im more in favor of assesing the integrity of the breeder than worrying about an all grand litter and that jibberish....According to the label .... NTCH/GRNT champs etc and who's got the best reproducer in theory it gives me a 10% chance of getting a dog that will make a decent dog.....(MAYBE). Here we go again, cuz nobody is giving the dam the credit she deserves.
Once ya had a dog that is the best you have owned in 40 years the measuring stick changes though......but it surely shudnt be measured by how many nite champs are on the papers of the stud.....something to look at? Yeah, something to consider ? Surely.....but a determining factor for UKC registration....hardly.

Dont matter either way I suppose cuz it wont ever happen.....
More pups registered = more money changing hands.....

As always....jmo.....nothing else.

Lazy or priorities

Everyone wants a good one but few are willing to hunt hard enough and in the right way to make a good one. Me included. I am older and dont hunt like I used to. Land has changed timber is gone. Land owner don't won't you in their land I can go on and on and make excuses. I missed out on my children but ain't goin to with my grand babies. I love the coondogs but don't have it in me that I once did. Most talk about it but just don't hunt them enough to have a top hound. JMO

Ding Ding Ding!!! We have a winner!

You hit the nail on the head Perry. Truer words have never been spoken. I can relate to and am a prime example of what you describe. Less excuses and more of getting up off my lazy rear end would serve me well!

All these things are true:

I am older and don't have the energy I used to have.

I am not blessed with as many coon now that I'm back home in Oklahoma as I was all the years in Kansas.

I used to be able to let my pups run loose.

Now I can't.

My dilemma is this...I have owned three real top hounds in my life. I know what one is.

I don't have the money to buy one, nor quite the energy and coon to train one quite up to par.

I been reading this and find it fairly entertaining. I don't breed my blueticks for coonhunters, although that is all I do. I breed them for big game hunters. The big game hunters are easier to please and will give a pup a better chance to show themselves then coon hunters, but I do sell a lot to coon hunters who seem happy with my product. Nite champions or Grand nites don't mean anything to me anymore, especially when I see the low number of hounds at the hunts.

Getting old

I am 52 and still love it. Just find that I have too much happening to go like I used too. It used to consume me and I put everything else on the back burner including my family. I made God a promise that he would be first and then my family everything else would have to line up later. Don't get me wrong I still hunt more than most but don't stay out all nite anymore.

Hunting every night doesn't seem as exciting when your ankles, knees, shoulders hurt the next morning. At 58 years old the body does limit enjoyment while hunting. I still hunt 4 to 6 nights per week if the weather is suitable. If I had a super young dog I'm sure I would hunt more. Treeing a coon or two and going home after a couple hours isn't what I call hunting hard even if I go 6 nights per week.
