I don't believe that most dogs receive the chance to be a good prospect. The biggest reason is that most hunters have too many dogs. You're kidding yourself if you think you can get the most out of a young dog if you have 4 or 5 others to also train. If you have a young dog that has the running and treeing traits that you like, you need to focus on hunting the hair off of that dog. Lots of dogs will run and tree a coon but that's not enough for me. A good prospect at my house can't wait to jump in the truck, steps out of the box when I say it's name to get its collars on, once we arrive to our hunting spot the dog should come out ready to hunt, it comes to me when called and leads like a show dog. Running and treeing a variety of types of coon takes a lot of hunting and boot leather on your part. These are just my opinions based on high expectations.
