I don't use no throw away blade knife and never will, but I aint very good at sharpening anything "freehand" with just a stone either. Never was.
Now if I get to my edge guide it's a different story...I can easily take the hardest stainless steel bladed knife and soon have it so it will cut you painlessly.
Bottom line is that I don't know if it's the quick throw away that guys like or not. What I do know is that there is a big difference between a good decent sharp knife and an extremely very razor sharp knife. I like razor sharp, but I don't necessarily like it for skinning an animal.
Shaving with a straight razor all these years has taught me that a fine honed edge is a start, but a stropped edge is the finishing touch...if you want it really super scary sharp.

Schrade or case.Case only one made in USA. I guess no one knows how to sharpen a knife, it does take years of practice. But was worth all the time and cut fingers LOL.

I have a bunch of knives And enjoy putting a good edge on one. But my daughter gave me a havalon and that thing is sweet. I'm still using the first blade, skinned and processed 2 gators, fileted probably 100 catfish, Skinned and processed 2 hogs. I don't skin many coon, I give most to a man that fixes them for wild game suppers. I cook a few. I have a sharpener that will put the edge back on the havalon, and I hit it a lick every once in a while. Don't like throwing good blades away.

The case, improved muskrat has 2 blades the same size. Had mine for 20 plus years and still holds a good edge. Can't go wrong with one!

Go to Knives Shipped Free and check out their sharpening kits. They have a Otter Box kit with a leather strop, honing compounds and sand papers. You can put a scary sharp edge on a knife pretty quick.

Yep. I use a damascus blade. Holds a great edge longer then the stainless steel ones.
