Any of you that are from the NW Iowa region will remember when Howard Thompson and members of the Ottoson club had their club fun hunt in the fall. For some reason it always coincided with my trip to Howard's to pheasant hunt. They always had a contest to see who could skin a coon the fastest. They had one member and I forget his name, I watched him skin one in 1 minute exactly. And he said he messed up and it didn't normally take that long. That was pretty impressive.

About 5 minutes for me. Any faster and I'd probably be skinning my own hands. Lol

While hunting last season i timed my buddy Brad Hall after a little "bet u cant skin one in less than 3 minutes" challenge. Well he did it right at 3 minutes on the tailgate of my truck in the woods. Sure wouldnt want nobody to time me! Sloooooowww!

Skinning coon

A friend and I hunted up north with a guy one time. When that coon hit the ground he was on it like a hound. He had that thing shucked and clipped on his belt walking sending his dog on. I whispered to my friend that I was pretty sure that coon was still kickin as we walked off. Never seen anything like it. This repeated 7 more times through that stretch of woods. I was amazed every time.

I cant believe nobody has said something like: "when the coon realizes it's me and my dog that treed him he stands up on the limb, undoes a zipper and just throws his hide right on down."
Then the next guy can chime in: "our coons in these parts do the same thing, except they have the common decency to at least put their hide on a stretcher and zip it back up before they throw it down!!!"

This thread is turning into a Jerry Clower story!!!!!

I've been reading this thread for three days and it still takes me 20 minutes to strip the tail!!!!!

I have been reading all these posts thinking there's no way you could skin a coon in anywhere near a minute. As chance would have it I'm also reading a book written by an Amishman in Russel Pa. (Andy Byler) It's like a little journal of his life coon hunting and I just read a passage that say's his boys timed him skinning a coon in 1 1/2 minutes. That is really fast I couldn't have the hind legs skinned down and tail stripped in that amount of time.

skinning a coon is so simple i cant believe anyone wouldnt believe it takes a minute or two, the tail?! it takes a matter of 5 seconds to split down a little ways and hit it with a stripper, what is so hard to believe? i can understand if your doing it for taxidermy

i skun a pybald doe out for my brother last archery exactly like you would do a coon except when i got up to the ears i took the head off with it and that only took around a 25 minutes

cut the tails off? lmao if you have a fur buyer who buys a hide without the tail i gotta meet him!!!

i never tore a face off that might be more funny than cuttin the tail at the base

YOU DONT GET TOP DOLLAR FOR CUTS AND HOLES and NO TAILS!!! learn how to handle fur is all i can say

theres videos on youtube of skinning a beaver in 3 minutes, that right there is insane it takes me probably 15 to 20, if you cant believe a coon can be done in a minute go check out a beaver gettin skun out in 3 minutes, im still confused as to why people think skinnin a coon in a minute or two is not believable lol

do you really think hide hunters would be spending that kinda time on one coon and keep doing it lol? sounds like it takes you guys longer to skin one then it did your dog to tree it, well maybe except you appalachian blue haha

It most certainly does take me longer to skin the coon than it took for my dog to tree it unless it was a big old bore that ran a mile. I've never really went to the bother of timing myself but I know I have to be in the 10 min range or longer. I'd have to switch to blueticks to beat the dogs time LOL.
